The importance of published accounts by African slave ship survivors is well-known but not their existence in large numbers. Fogleman and Hanserd catalog nearly five hundred discrete accounts and more than 2,500 printings of them over four centuries in numerous Atlantic languages. Short biographies of each African, print histories of the complete or partial life story. Five Hundred African Voices an invaluable resource for scholars, teachers, students, and others wishing to study transatlantic slavery using African Voices.

This article offers a reading of the status and image of women in the postcolonial context of Africa through Branle-bas en noir et blanc and Perpétue et l’habitude du malheur by iconoclastic writer Mongo Beti. The female figures of his novels allow him to decry the conditions in which women are forced to live, between colonial, patriarchal, matriarchal and religious subjugation. Mongo Beti wants to be realistic when he talks about the problems of Africa; using women as a metaphor, he paints an Africa plagued by multiple evils that require us to get busy to get it out of underdevelopment, …
