Monstrous Dialogues: The Host And South Korean Inverted Exile, James Lloyd Turner

Bong Joon-ho‟s monster movie blockbuster, The Host (Gweomul, 2006), is the most commercially successful film in South Korean cinema history. The film‟s popularity and significance derive from its unearthing of the ambivalence concerning South Korea‟s rapid transformation from a rural dictatorship to an urban democracy with one of the strongest economies on the planet. This ambivalence is buried beneath a veneer of "progress" blanketing contemporary South Korea and constitutes a condition I call inverted exile. The Host explicitly engages life in inverted exile through my notion of aesthetic dialogue. Aesthetic dialogue, takes influence from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and …

The threats found in horror films change with time, each decade consisting of threats that were most frightening for the time period. Horror film scholars, such as Andrew Tudor, determined that in 1970s horror films the threat has migrated from external forces into the home and the family. Invading aliens and monsters were thrown replaced by psychosis and evil children. This notion of making the familiar unfamiliar and threatening is paralleled in concerns addressed during the second-wave of feminism; women were making the normative and familiar idea of mother unfamiliar as they migrated from the private and into the public …

Are We Cool Yet?: A Longitudinal Content Analysis Of Nerd And Geek Representations In Popular Television, Christopher Louis Cardiel

This study explores the representation of nerds and geeks in popular broadcast television programs over the course of the past twenty years. A content analysis of the five most popular scripted broadcast television programs for each year was conducted in order to assess the frequency of nerd characters, as well as the social competence, physical attractiveness, and demographic information of each such character. In addition, a supplemental survey design study was employed in order to collect public opinion data regarding perceptions of nerds in general and on television. I created the term Neo-Raconteur to convey my interest in medium theory to support the artistic custom of revealing cultural conventions for allocation into artistic genres. The term evolved from the French word "Raconteur," meaning: somebody who tells stories or anecdotes in an interesting or entertaining way. Teaching Artists are an important component of the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department's outreach touring program that visits K-12 schools throughout Utah each year. However, the Education Department could be using Teaching Artists in different and better ways to help K-12 teachers infuse theatre into their curriculum. This work looks carefully at the outreach offered by the Utah Shakespearean Festival's Education Department and then compares it to the outreach work being done by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. This thesis explores how game makers conceive of and navigate the intersection between digital systems and real world systems by asking, how can social impact game designers shape procedural rhetoric to effectively address complex real world systems with digital systems? By examining three game case studies, I reach four significant findings regarding player agency, subversive play, design approaches to scale, and game difficulty in regards to systems fluency.

Both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have developed diametrically opposed national narratives and identities that are both predicated on the concept of victimization. These narratives have developed into simulacral narratives as the result of the nature of their development. This paper deals with the Palestinian simulacral narrative which bolsters societal values, particularly the value of victimhood, that are crucial to coping with the prolonged conflict. The Western media, at any given moment during the conflict, has either accepted the concept of Palestinian's as victims of the conflict and the Palestinian simulacral narrative, or rejected it. In today’s society there are photos everywhere; they are in magazines, advertisements, newspapers, and books because photos make the text or the story stand out. Some may not know it, but most of these photos have been edited and retouched. This research paper attempted to determine the majority opinion of what types of photo editing was above the tolerable limit, as well as the public awareness of media manipulation. The different levels of photo editing included changing the contrast, removal of blemishes and dust, addition/removal of objects, and addition/removal of main subjects. I conducted a study of the relationship between prey availability and foraging habitat selection of Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis), big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) and evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis) in an urban-rural landscape matrix of southwestern Indianapolis. Insects were collected from nine different habitat types found within the range of these species. Insect data were collected from 2006 to 2008 using sticky traps placed in each habitat type. Habitat types were ranked by importance to each bat species (based on previous studies) and then compared to the average number of prey insects captured per habitat …

Typical of an international tendency, the history of television in Ireland has been framed by national boundaries. This paper argues that viewing the history of television solely through institutional sources and a nation state-bound perspective obscures transnational influences and homogenises diverse audience experiences. Moreover, such histories may serve to reproduce a limited range of types of nationalist rhetoric. The research presented here explores the history of television in Ireland through life story interviews. This reveals views of the nation, its global context and processes of social change quite different to those discussed in orthodox histories. Arguably, this shift in historical …

序

去年仲夏，我和旅居柏林的藝術家朋友葉立榮，合作參予了一個在外蒙古舉行，由德國藝術策展人籌辦，名為「首屆地景藝術雙年展：蒙古360°」的地景作品展，我們的作品題材及內容，均和人類、環境、現代生活生態、大自然等息息相關，由個人經歷、自身文化、處境出發，對現世人類週遭的環境破壞和失衡，與及大自然規律反應的種種後果，所作出的反思和討論。

今秋，我很榮幸被香港嶺南大學視覺研究系邀請作駐校藝術家，為此我特地邀請葉立榮再一次合作，製作相討了好一陣子的「移山」裝置藝術展覽。

我和葉立榮是中學同學，可說有着共同的起步點：少年時已酷愛中國藝術哲學，學習中國水墨畫，和對當代藝術充滿好奇。我倆都是同一代的人，香港土生土長，居住環境狹窄，生活在都市齷齪擠逼的小空間內，想像及考慮着中國畫和中國藝術哲學中的審美、自然、空間，與及外面不一樣的世界。我倆分享着共同年代中，個人及集體的回憶，我們的文化背景扎根點似乎是相當一致的。後來葉立榮到芝加哥藝術學院修讀，再移居德國，我則一直留在香港。經過長時間的分隔和各自的經歷、成長，然後意外地重逢。從此之後，在不斷的對話和討論中，互相重新發現各自對藝術、人生、大自然，種種我們不約而同重視的課題的考慮、看法、着眼點，和藝術表達上的異同，繼而發展出合作的可行性。

是次「移山」裝置藝術展覽，是我們相討蘊釀了好些時候的結果。對我倆來說，它有着象徵意義：我們覺得，人的現實不易改變，例如香港肆意填海，帶來對生活環境不可恢復的破壞、全球人類社會的各種災難及困局等；藝術則給予我們在另一層面上一個改變的機會。我們的作品所表達的，面貌和手法可能各異，但在其精神上所，可算是殊途同歸的。
