To make it through my final year of my doctoral degree, I had to focus on my research more and my mom less. I had spent most of my life worrying and caring for my mom through her mental health struggles. In September 2017, my mom ended her life. I was pressured into returning to my academic responsibilities shortly after her death. I buried my emotions to get through it. This poem explores the emotional labor of being authentic in spaces not built for women of color. This poem specifically addresses the experiences of Black women. Often, Black women find themselves torn between maintaining peace and being themselves. The poem addresses concepts such as tone policing, code-switching, and expression. It honors Black women in academia who feel they have to shrink themselves to be seen. There is a sense of safety that comes with fitting in and not making waves in a predominantly white space. Attending the The State of Women of Color in New York Higher Education symposium at SUNY Oswego brought together women from various campuses, communities, roles and fields of expertise to share community, reflection, and wisdom. The different presentations provided food for thought, and in some cases, reminders of the space we need to ensure we are well as we do the work we want and need to do. This poem reflected the messages shared by multiple speakers throughout the day.

This introduction serves as a means to share with you, the reader, about an upstate New York symposium that occurred in March of 2025. The event aimed to create a space where we could explore the trials, tribulations, and jubilations that women of color in New York higher education experience. Speakers and attendees gathered from all over the state—and, indeed, country—on a cold wintery day in a spirit of togetherness and awareness of where we find ourselves in this moment. We were there to learn and grow, and to find community.

Perhaps one of the most notorious periods in African history was that of Apartheid – a system of racial, political, social, and economic discrimination placed upon the non-white majority of South Africa. Beginning in 1948 and lasting until the early 1990s, Apartheid marked a significant transformation in not only African liberation movements but also those happening across the globe, including the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. This article discusses the domestic violence portrayed in Guy de Maupassant's short story La Confidence. The story centers on Marquise de Rennedou, who recounts to her friend, Baroness de Grangerie, her revenge for her husband's harsh treatment. The purpose of this study is to explain the depiction of patriarchal normalization that causes domestic violence, as viewed through the concept of power represented in La Confidence, along with the characters' efforts to resist such violence. This research employs a qualitative methodology using A.J. Greimas’s structural analysis theory, based on the actantial and functional schemes. The actantial scheme helps identify …
