Introducing The Anthology, Margaret T. Cain
The Short Story
This assignment requires students to write an introduction to a “pretend” anthology of short stories. Given at the beginning of the short story unit so as to focus their reading, the prompt directs them to examine several introductions to anthologies in the library in order to see what it is that anthologizers talk about; to determine the principle on which to choose stories; to find the right voice; and to critique three stories from the faux anthology to demonstrate their aptness for the collection as well as the students’ own understanding of the characteristics of good short story writing.

Observing Art Through The Lens Of Oscar Wilde, 2013 University of Kentucky
Observing Art Through The Lens Of Oscar Wilde, Brian Hancock
Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection
Oscar Wilde was a fascinating literary figure who took center stage in England near the end of the nineteenth century. He not only created popular art, but discussed and defined art in original and inventive ways as well. An observance of five of Wilde’s more popular works, including four essays and his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, was performed with the intention of deciphering his complex views on the subject of art. While Wilde arguably arrogantly attempts to alienate art from society, it can ultimately be discerned that he believed the purpose of art was to inform …

Unsettling The Bildungsroman: Reading Contemporary Ethnic American Women's Fiction, By Stella Bolaki., Ania Spyra
English
Stella Bolaki gives us in Unsettling the Bildungsroman a useful review of the rich corpus of Bildungsroman scholarship already existing, invoking Franco Moretti, Iris Marion Young, Bonnie Hoover Braendlin, Martin Japtok, Rosemary Marangoly George, Pin-chia Feng, and many others. In order to situate her own intervention in this field, she goes back to early definitions of the traditional Bildungsroman, which saw radical individualism and upward mobility as the most desired end of the Bildung’s trajectory.
Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, 2013 Butler University
Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason N. Goldsmith
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde draws on Robert Louis Stevensons intimate knowledge of Victorian legal culture knowledge Stevenson acquired while studying law at the University of Edinburgh. (Although he was called to the Scottish bar in 1875, he abandoned the legal profession and never practiced it.) Its trace can be found in the work's title, main characters, and narrative structure: the title suggests a legal action; Mr. Utterson is the legal representative of Henry Jekyll, who is himself both a doctor of law (LLD) and a doctor of Civil laws (DCL); and the final two chapters …

A critique is presented of the play "Othello" by William Shakespeare, focusing on a reference from Othello's final speech to an incident in Aleppo, Syria that the author attributes to the manuscript essay "A True Discourse" by George Manwaring, a companion of English adventurer Sir Anthony Sherley. Early 17th century British history, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, and Queen Elizabeth I are mentioned, as well as references in the works to Turks and the censorship of English literature.

In this introduction to Barker and Solga’s 2013 special issue of Shakespeare Bulletin, Barker, Solga, and Cary Mazer discuss the use of emotional realist acting techniques in Cheek By Jowl’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, assessing its political potential as well as reflecting on the risks it takes. The essay ranges beyond Cheek By Jowl to introduce some of the core questions explored by the issue as a whole.
