Ann Yearsley, "Earl Goodwin", And The Politics Of Romantic Discontent, Chris Foss
English & Linguistics Articles
There is a dearth of more substantial critical studies on Ann Yearsley’s tragic drama Earl Goodwin in general, and while the few out there have helpfully illuminated the play’s representation of the historical plight of women and the poor during Anglo-Saxon times, as well as its application to their current predicaments in Romantic-era England and France, they have tended to leave unexplored the ways in which Yearsley simultaneously is clarifying and extending her anger at and frustration with the class- and gender-based discrimination she experienced firsthand in the fallout with her mentor Hannah More over the profits from her first …

Fiction as a genre is well known for its ability to discuss a wide range of topics in a way that is both entertaining and empathetic. But while fictional pieces, especially the short story, are famous for creating narratives that help readers understand experiences unlike their own and characters unlike themselves, I would argue that fiction can also serve as a medium of self- reflection. As someone who identifies as multi-ethnic …

An Existentialist Approach To Teaching Writing: Anguish, Bad Faith, And Seriousness In Composition, Andreas Peter Herzog
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims at developing a model concept for the teaching of ethics in the composition classroom through the use of existentialism in the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. Overall, the gap I am trying to fill with my dissertation is a lack of awareness of how much Sartre actually fits rhetorical theory and composition. Ultimately, this dissertation is the attempt to develop an ethic that is universally applicable in the teaching of composition, without the need for a service learning environment or additional resources outside the university itself. To provide an overview of the project, the approach will be illustrated …

Art As Storytelling: A Process Of Discovery And Creativity Applied In The Medium Of Story Branding, Luke T. Marchesani
Selected Honors Theses
Storytelling finds its purpose in the origins of humanity. The advent of technology, hardware, and software has created an intersection of ubiquity of storytelling opportunity and scarcity of storytelling ability. For this reason, the storyteller needs to be “enlightened”. This thesis presents a comprehensive storytelling process that equips the storyteller to turn words into artistic expressions, specifically in the artistic medium of branding. Through story branding, artistic pieces that tell stories are branded through multiple techniques that spread the story’s idea through an entire population.

What happens when an English professor and a librarian share their love of books and reading? A campus book club is born. Many students associate reading with what happens in the classroom or studying towards a specific goal. They don’t see the power of reading for enjoyment, entertainment, and pleasure. Stephen Krushen, in The Power of Reading, defines free voluntary reading (FVR), as “reading because you want to: no book reports, no questions at the end of the chapter. In FVR you don’t have to finish the book if you don’t like it. FVR is the kind of reading …

Strengthening The Reader Self-Efficacies Of Reluctant And Struggling Readers Through Literature Circles, Elena M. Venegas

Although a subskills approach to reading instruction is merited in improving the reading skills of struggling readers, struggling readers also benefit from balanced literacy instruction. An overemphasis on reading subskills arguably minimizes students’ enjoyment of reading and motivation to read and may inevitably result in the formation of reluctant or struggling readers. In turn, this may diminish the self-efficacies of reluctant or struggling readers. I designed an embedded multiple case study framed by social cognitive theory to explore the potential influence of literature circles, a balanced literacy instructional strategy, on the reader self-efficacies of reluctant and struggling readers in Grades …
