A Corpus Linguistic Approach To Discursive Representation Of Lgbt Identities In The Bangkok Post Newspaper, Duangkamon Chuaikun

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The present study examines how each group of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) is represented discursively in Bangkok Post, a major English-language newspaper in Thailand. The data comprise LGBT-related news articles from 2012 to 2019. Statistically significant collocates of each term were extracted via AntConc and Sketch Engine and were then categorized according to their semantic relations as observed from their concordance lines. Findings from the Bangkok Post corpus show that the key terms share common semantic preference patterns that point to the discourse about LGBT political movement. However, the terms; GAY and TRANSGENDER are also associated with “crime”, …

English Language Assessment Policy And Agency Of English Teachers In Thailand, Benjamas Dhammarungruang 2020 Graduate School

English Language Assessment Policy And Agency Of English Teachers In Thailand, Benjamas Dhammarungruang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The concept of human agency has received increasing attention in the field of education in the past decade. Education researchers, those in the area of English language education included, have much to grapple with in exploring and conceptualizing agency of teachers—or teacher agency. This is because teacher agency has been emphasized in education policy, stressing the importance of teachers acting as "agents of change." Yet, ironically, education policy both enables and constrains teacher agency due to the conflicts between the rhetoric of policy text and the reality of teaching context faced by the teachers. This paradoxical situation, coupled with the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research study investigated the stress patterns and metalinguistic knowledge of Thai learners on the pronunciation of English derivational suffixed words. The study compared how the learners performed before and after the praxis intervention, where the stress placement rules of English suffixed words were explicitly taught and trained. Thirty first-year university students were selected by stratified random sampling based on their proficiency levels and were grouped into the high and low proficiency groups. They took the pre-test which was the read aloud task of the base and the suffixed words. Their performance was recorded, and the stress patterns were analysed. …

Semiotic Landscape Of Bangkok Sex Tourism Spaces, Joey Andrew Lucido Santos 2020 Graduate school

Semiotic Landscape Of Bangkok Sex Tourism Spaces, Joey Andrew Lucido Santos

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Sex tourism, though a potentially significant site of investigation, has received limited scholarly attention in the semiotic landscape research in the past two decades. Addressing this gap, I interrogate the discursive construction of Bangkok sex tourism spaces focusing on Silom areas, Cowboy alley, Nana Plaza. The study aims to identify the patterns of linguistic and semiotic choices in sexed signs, analyze the role of linguistic and semiotic resources in indexing gender and sexuality, and investigate the discursive construction of Bangkok sex tourism spaces. The data comprised 122 photographed sexed signs. I also did the non-participant observation in the areas investigated …

Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang 2020 Graduate School

Avoidance Of The English Passive Construction By L1 Chinese Learners, Yang Wang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. However, recent researchers, i.e. Thiamtawan and Pongpairoj …

Development Of Out-Of-Class Extensive Reading To Enhance Perceived English Reading Self-Efficacy Of Underserved Students, Chanisara Tangkijmongkol

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Perceived English reading self-efficacy is one of the essential factors that facilitate development of English language ability as it motivates learners to read and learn. The present study aimed to investigate the outcomes of out-of-class extensive reading to enhance perceived reading self-efficacy of underserved student and to explore underserved students' attitudes towards out-of-class extensive reading. In this study, a mixed-method research design, with a particular focus on the use of narrative inquiry, was employed, and the study participants consisted of five lower secondary students in a slum community in Bangkok, Thailand. A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul 2020 Faculty of Arts

A Corpus-Driven Study Of The English Present Perfect In General And Textbook Corpora, Chanakarn Chareonkul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. This may be one of the reasons why second language learners frequently encounter difficulties in mastering the English present perfect. As Yoshimura et al. (2014) argue, language learners are likely to have a problem with the form/pattern-meaning mapping in the use of the present perfect. To fill this gap, the present study takes …

Representations Of The Body In British Science-Fiction Novels From The Late Nineteenth To The Early Twentieth Century: A Study Of Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race, H.G. Wells' The Time Machine And Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Kornnop Jaroenvong 2020 Faculty of Arts

Representations Of The Body In British Science-Fiction Novels From The Late Nineteenth To The Early Twentieth Century: A Study Of Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race, H.G. Wells' The Time Machine And Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Kornnop Jaroenvong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Many critics have suggested that most of the non-human characters in late-Victorian British science-fiction novels reflect social alienation and the cultural fear of physical, mental and moral degeneration. However, by relying on the concept of critical posthumanism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that attempts to debunk anthropocentrism and emphasise the significance of non-human otherness, this thesis studies representations of the body in three British science-fiction novels: Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race (1871), H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (1895) and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), which provide speculative visions of what humans will be in the future. It demonstrates …

(In)Equities In The Publishing Industry: The Politics Of Representation, Hallie R. Lepphaille 2020 Humboldt State University

(In)Equities In The Publishing Industry: The Politics Of Representation, Hallie R. Lepphaille

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This project contains an overview and key introductory sections of an intersectional, equity-based literary publishing course textbook. The full-length edited collection, currently under external review for publication, seeks to rectify long-held disparities of the publishing industry in regard to hiring, acquisitions, developmental editing, and considerations in audience, readerships, and marketing. Each chapter examines the ways that racism, ableism, heterosexism, and cisnormativity, operate in the industry, limiting who is represented at an editor’s desk and in the pages of published books. The collection is intended to be utilized in upper-division and graduate-level literary publishing courses. This project is a response to …

Images Of Ancient Egypt And The Gender Politics Of The Faerie Queene, Genavieve Alt 2020 Georgia Southern University

Images Of Ancient Egypt And The Gender Politics Of The Faerie Queene, Genavieve Alt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My thesis argues that Edmund Spenser uses radically different representations of Ancient Egypt to explore complex ideas about gender roles in the Faerie Queene. Book III emphasizes the negative view of Egypt perpetuated through the Book of Exodus and Greek understanding of the mythological king Busiris. Book V emphasizes the positive view of Egypt through the many benevolent myths surrounding the goddess Isis. Spenser uses images of good and evil Egypt to discuss the abolition of normative gender roles.

The introductory section will introduce the mythology surrounding Isis followed by a discussion of the literature referenced throughout. The first …

Head Fakes, Offensive Schemes And Counter Plays: Why Motivation Matters, Dawan Coombs

Dominic’s Oregon Ducks hat caught my eye as I entered his classroom. Although Autzen Stadium was more than 800 miles away, the Ducks were on the cusp of college football greatness and this kid knew it. He looked like a football player and, as we talked, football topped the list of things he loved—followed by wrestling, long boarding, biking, and the outdoors. When I asked if there was anything he didn’t like, he chuckled and said, “Reading.” Dominic (student names are pseudonyms) proceeded to explain that he never finished books because it felt hard to focus and because he read …

Early Black Poetry, Social Justice, And Black Children: Receptions Of Child Activism In African American Literary History, Tabitha LaShay Joy Lowery 2020 West Virginia University

Early Black Poetry, Social Justice, And Black Children: Receptions Of Child Activism In African American Literary History, Tabitha Lashay Joy Lowery

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In spite of the substantial amount of critical work that has been produced on the recovery of early African American literature in the last few decades, our representations of black authors are still limited. Current studies of early African American poets privilege the identification of African American literature with resistance to slavery. This identification has persisted and has made the field one-dimensional. My dissertation provides reception histories of four early black poets—Phillis Wheatley, George Moses Horton, Frances Harper, and Paul Laurence Dunbar—to argue for and present an expansive understanding of African American literature. A thorough examination of these authors’ circulation …

[Introduction To] Writing Centers At The Center Of Change, Joe Essid, Brian Mctague

Bookshelf

Writing Centers at the Center of Change looks at how eleven centers, internationally, adapted to change at their institutions, during a decade when their very success has become a valued commodity in a larger struggle for resources on many campuses.

Bringing together both US and international perspectives, this volume offers solutions for adapting to change in the world of writing centers, ranging from the logistical to the pedagogical, and even to the existential. Each author discusses the origins, appropriate responses, and partners to seek when change comes from within a school or outside it. Chapters document new programs being formed …

Imagined Communities: The Individual And The Nation In Aw's Map Of The Invisible World And Rushdie's Midnight's Children, Yu Chia Chang

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the relationship between the individual and the nation in Tash Aw’s Map of the Invisible Worldand Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. Incorporated Benedict Anderson’s theory of “imagined communities” into the reading of both of the novels, this thesis discusses the limitation of nationalism and the imagination of individuals, aiming to show that it is the diversity of a nation that turns the stagnant imagined communities into fluid imagining communities.

Breaking Black Boundaries: The Poetry Of Rita Dove, LaVonna D. Wright 2020 Georgia Southern University

Breaking Black Boundaries: The Poetry Of Rita Dove, Lavonna D. Wright

Honors College Theses

By tracing the motifs of domestic space, classical and popular music, and ballroom dancing within Rita Dove’s Thomas and Beulah, Grace Notes, Sonata Mulattica, and American Smooth, I assert that she both challenges and expands Black poetic culture by exploring topics previously considered outside of the purview of Black poets. This analysis allows me to demonstrate her ability as a poet to move beyond simplistic, derivative, and ultimately constraining cultural expectations. Dove uses these motifs to expand the critically and culturally-imposed constrictions of Black poetry.

This, My Breath, Suzette Louise Mack

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This, My Breath, is a creative collection of memories gathered along the seasons in my life-mostly from my formative years. The stories highlight the patient, unconditional love my parents shared, and the way it has influenced me throughout my life. The stories are about life, love, loss, a yearning to belong, and a longing to be both interdependent and independent.

In my family of origin, it was the simple rhythms established through daily life and the honoring of traditions that inspired the deepest meaning, purpose, and hope. The seasons of the year brought my family alive with a flow of …
