Futile Attempts, Melissa Graveson 2020 Dominican University of California

Futile Attempts, Melissa Graveson

The Tuxedo Archives

I don’t know why I remember waking up one morning, and getting ready to go to the mall when I was five years old. The morning started just as so many others had. I crawled out of my bed, reluctant to leave the warmth, and comfort, it provided. Soon after I made it over to the dresser, where I found an outfit to wear. The shirt and pants I put on were indicative of a child’s wardrobe. These items were not unique, or original, by any means. Having put on traditional children’s clothes I then moved onto adorning myself with …

Finding problems, new goals, and even battles,

But finding a way for success!

Feelings change constantly like hours of the day.

8 Weeks, Aiyana Beck

The Tuxedo Archives

I get to his office tired. My prefect dark ringlet curls dripping wet from the rain. I start to his office not paying attention to the fact that his secretary is trying to stop me.

“Miss Brown,” his secretary is saying, “he is on a conference call right now. If you wait I can let him know you are here.”

“I don’t have time to wait David.”

“Miss Brown,” he shouts at me, but I am already at the door to Joe’s office.

As I walk in, I swallow hard.

“So we are going to build this building in stages,” …

Led Down The Garden Path: Cognitive Processing Of English Language Idioms, Daniel Alan Vandehey 2020 Portland State University

Led Down The Garden Path: Cognitive Processing Of English Language Idioms, Daniel Alan Vandehey

Dissertations and Theses

The discourse community surrounding the study of idioms often disagree regarding the proper classification of idioms. Some scholars believe that the figurative meaning of many idioms cannot be determined through the deconstruction of their lexical parts, and therefore should be classified as an irreducible lexical unit. Others believe that even though the figurative meaning of some idioms are obscured, people process these opaque idioms as they would a metaphor, constructing meaning through an integration process that includes the component pieces of the idiom, the surrounding context, and the message receiver's knowledge network. This study forwards research concerning whether idioms should …

Draft: First-Year Composition Eportfolio Project As High Impact Practice, Jenni Keys 2020 CSU San Bernardino

Draft: First-Year Composition Eportfolio Project As High Impact Practice, Jenni Keys

Workshops & Institutes

Abstract: The ePortfolio project will be the culminating formal writing assignment in a two-term course that completes students' first-year composition university requirement. This project fulfills three areas of ePortfolios as a high impact practice:

  • Inquiry: Students seek and perceive connections between the course learning outcomes and the experiences in their first-year composition course in relation to their development as writers
  • Reflection: Students identify and repeatedly reflect on their personal journeys as writers, answering the questions “what have I learned?” and “how have I grown?”; students consider those answers within the context of their continued experiences as university and life-long learners. …

Imagining Wildernesses: Susan Howe’S Poetic Corrective, Samantha R. Walsh 2020 CUNY Hunter College

Imagining Wildernesses: Susan Howe’S Poetic Corrective, Samantha R. Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores language poet Susan Howe’s conceptualization of the natural world in her 1989 poem, Thorow. Conceptualization of a distinct and pure wilderness, inherited from Puritan settlers, is traced through Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and located in Howe’s experience at Lake George in 1987. This thesis describes Howe’s efforts to decolonize and open up closed historical narratives. Howe’s careful deconstruction of normative linguistic structures exposes the restrictive nature of standard syntax and canonical narratives.

The Novel-Manifesto: Modernist Kunstlerromane And The Discourse Of Modernist Aesthetic Theory, Edward Stephen Marks 2020 Saint John's University, Jamaica New York

The Novel-Manifesto: Modernist Kunstlerromane And The Discourse Of Modernist Aesthetic Theory, Edward Stephen Marks

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes the modernist kunstlerroman as a site for aesthetic theorizing. Like the aesthetic manifestos that proliferated between 1890 and 1939, the kunstlerromane of this period advance a set of aesthetic criteria and values. The modernist kunstlerroman’s formal qualities—it’s an art object about art—as well as the period in which it is written—the aesthetically revolutionary modernist period—provide the foundation for reading modernist kunstlerromane as manifesto-like novels. Through close reading, three kunstlerromane of the period are explored as examples of the novel-manifesto: The Tragic Muse (1890), by Henry James; Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), by James …

Hidden In Detail: Triangulating Shakespeare Through Sixteenth-Century Prose Pamphlets, Scott Donald Koski 2020 St. John's University

Hidden In Detail: Triangulating Shakespeare Through Sixteenth-Century Prose Pamphlets, Scott Donald Koski

Theses and Dissertations

Part of what has led to fetishizing Shakespeare both inside and outside of the academy is the inexplicable way he arrived on the London writing scene. Though scholars have searched for years trying to trace the path that led a young Shakespeare out of rural Warwickshire to the bustling streets of London, very little is known about the man himself in the time leading up to his arrival and first being called an “upstart crow” by Robert Greene in 1592. This void has become known as the “lost years,” and because there is so little information save a few documents …

Colonial Trauma And Testimony In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Jamaica Kincaid’S Autobiography Of My Mother, Leana Rene 2020 Saint John's University, Jamaica New York

Colonial Trauma And Testimony In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Jamaica Kincaid’S Autobiography Of My Mother, Leana Rene

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will examine Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle to examine the colonial trauma and loss found in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jamaica Kincaid’s Autobiography of My Mother, not just on a character level, but in a much larger colonial context. Some scholars have suggested that Shelley’s monster is a symbol of a colonized other (due to his appearance and certain features he has). Kincaid’s Xuela is for sure a colonized other because of the heritage of her mother. This thesis explores their abandonment by their creators as the abandonment of colonized nations from their colonizers. Even now, formerly colonized …

Preaching Hope: Young Adult Fantasy And Science Fiction As Conversation Partners With Scripture, Kathleen Monson Lutes

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This thesis treats young adult science fiction and fantasy as a conversation partner with scripture, particularly but not limited to themes of apocalypse, revelation, and end-times, for the purposes of preaching God’s love and hope in a chaotic world. Included in this conversation is The Hunger Games trilogy, Divergent trilogy, A Wrinkle in Time, The Last Battle, and Warm Bodies. The dominant themes discussed are prophecy, sin/evil/repentance, resistance, and the Great Battle. This work provides a voice for preaching difficult themes, including end-times, in a world of fear and darkness. It particularly offers an example for preaching the timelessness of …
