The Covid-19 pandemic has made mental health issues sky rocket. Many people are suffering from anxiety, depression, OCD and many other mental health problems now more than ever. Without the in-person interactions, many people are eager to be able to hug friends and family again. People are also eager to see their favorite music artist live in concert again. In this paper, we discuss how music can help your mental health, how to prevent contracting the coronavirus, and ways you can help speed up the process of getting life back to normal.

Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey 2021 University of Minnesota Morris

Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey

English Publications

When discussing the origins, rise, and contemporary legitimization of biofiction, Oscar Wilde is a crucial figure. This is not just because he authored one of the first and most important reflections about the aesthetic form, but also because he became the subject of many biofictions, most notably Desmond Hall's I Give You Oscar Wilde: A Biographical Novel {1965), Peter Ackroyd's The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983), Louis Edwards's Oscar Wilde Discovers America (2003), and Colm Toibin's The Master (2004). Some, of course, would question and challenge my decision to include Toibin's novel in this list, as many would say …

William Penn’S Imperial Georgic And The Vernacular Landscapes Of Pennsylvania In Eighteenth-Century Quaker Journals, Jay David Miller 2021 George Fox University

William Penn’S Imperial Georgic And The Vernacular Landscapes Of Pennsylvania In Eighteenth-Century Quaker Journals, Jay David Miller

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This essay analyzes changes in the way Quaker writers represented the landscape of Pennsylvania, particularly the economic features of its built environment, over time. I argue that the promotional writing of William Penn constituted an “official” represent at ion of the landscape, using the genre of imperial georgic to highlight the colony’s productive and lucrative potential for an audience of investors while minimizing the role of indentured servitude, African enslavement, and Indigenous dis-possession in the process of economic development. Eighteenth- century Quaker reformers, however, developed a more “vernacular” portrayal of the landscape that was attentive to the privations of those …

Hope, Hunger, And Spiritual Liberation In Joyce's Dubliners, David P. Rando 2021 Trinity University

Hope, Hunger, And Spiritual Liberation In Joyce's Dubliners, David P. Rando

English Faculty Research

“Hope, Hunger, and Spiritual Liberation in Joyce’s Dubliners” challenges the consensus that Dubliners is best understood as an expression of paralysis or hopelessness. Seen through Ernst Bloch’s critical theory, hope emerges as a forward-looking process in Joyce’s stories, one wary of apotheosis and tied to historical conditions such as hunger. What emerges is a new way of regarding the political operation of Joyce’s texts as adaptive, anticipatory, and unfolding. While Joyce never underestimates the material and political resistances to hope posed by the poverty and hunger that his characters suffer under colonialism and capitalism—indeed, his texts invite readers to scrutinize …

The Bus Murals Of Anniston: Teaching The Freedom Riders History, Joanne E. Gates 2021 Jacksonville State University

The Bus Murals Of Anniston: Teaching The Freedom Riders History, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

PBS's American Experience makes available in streaming format its documentary of the Freedom Riders from the PBS website. With that and with a more detailed photographic slide show of the information panels on Anniston's Burning Bus murals, I seek to bring my students to an awareness of ways that history, especially the history of the violence that met the Freedom Riders outside Anniston, is worthy of a revisiting in today's times. I want to bring into my classroom an appreciation for the bus murals that depict the full history of the incident so that students attending Jacksonville State University can …
