Memory, Identity, And World Ii In Australia: Liz Reed's "Bigger Than Gallipoli", Christopher T. Lough 2021 Gettysburg College

Memory, Identity, And World Ii In Australia: Liz Reed's "Bigger Than Gallipoli", Christopher T. Lough

Student Publications

This paper is structured as a review of Liz Reed's 2004 study Bigger Than Gallipoli: War, History, and Memory in Australia, an analysis of the Australian government's public commemoration of the Second World War from 1994-95. Critiquing certain aspects of Reed's methodology, I bring in some of Jill Ker Conway's insights on Australian identity from her 1989 memoir The Road from Coorain, as well as other scholars of historical memory and political theory. While Reed makes some important insights on the merits and deficiencies of political nostalgia, I argue that her book represents a missed opportunity overall.

Are School Lunches Actually Healthy?, Jenna Cedor

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

For my research project I chose to examine whether school lunches are actually as healthy as they come out to be, and I will briefly look at why some frown upon them. While some individuals frown upon school lunches, if they are able to be served, they have to meet the requirements and standards that are in place. I want to be able to confidently tell those who are concerned that they can let their children eat the lunches that their schools provide them and not have a choice but to only eat a packed lunch. I also think some …

An Evolution Of Effectiveness Of Drug Courts, Sean Pinney

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The objective of this research is to examine the effectiveness of Drug Courts and what makes the courts more effective than the traditional probation process. A systematic review of studies conducted to assess the impact of drug courts on stated outcomes indicates that the policy is an effectives means of reducing negative outcomes between drug courts and drug offenders. In addition, this policy reduces the incarceration number of inmates due to the rehabilitation style treatment that the offenders receive.

Disney Princesses And Gender Expectations, Miranda Carter 2021 Longwood University

Disney Princesses And Gender Expectations, Miranda Carter

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

My research aims to show the older generation of Disney princesses' problems and how they are changing the narrative to give girls more agency. In some research, I have learned that 'Disney Princesses represent salient, powerful, attractive characters who tend to be portrayed as conforming to gender stereotypes and are rewarded for their gendered behavior' (Coyner, para9). Most girls identify with older princesses like Snow White or Cinderella than newer ones who give women more agency. I believe this is a topic that needs to be discussed more because it significantly affects girls and their identities. It is something that …

Heavy Metal, Moral Panic, And Residing Stigma, Frank Knott IV 2021 Longwood University

Heavy Metal, Moral Panic, And Residing Stigma, Frank Knott Iv

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Since its origins of the 1970s up to the present, the musical themes of Heavy Metal along with the associated subcultures have been the prey of various moral ideologies, particularly of a conservative matter. Moral panics have ensued in the past over various qualities of the genre, and there is still residual stigma to be found today, much of which is based upon misperceptions of cause and effect.

The Car Ride Home, Jonathan Rivera 2021 College of the Holy Cross

The Car Ride Home, Jonathan Rivera

English Honors Theses

The Car Ride Home explores the coming of age of a young boy into a queer man, searching and sifting through the trauma of home life, and realizing his mother’s addiction affects more than just herself, but an entire family. This realization coincides with views of masculinity, as he carefully watches the men around him. He internalizes these depictions of masculinity when exploring his own confusion and investigation of his own sexual identity and queerness. The poetry collection is broken up into two connected parts. Part one explores the illusion of childhood and nostalgia while introducing subtle glimpses and secrets …

Negotiating Multilingual Writer Identity In The Dissertation: International Perspectives On Language And Writing Practices, A. Brooke Boulton 2021 Winona State University

Negotiating Multilingual Writer Identity In The Dissertation: International Perspectives On Language And Writing Practices, A. Brooke Boulton

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Globalization and internationalization of higher education have perpetuated the dominance of English as the language of production and reproduction in doctoral education. English dominance considers the status of English as a lingua franca in academia. Multilingual students for whom English is not the first language must engage in complex language and writing practices to meet university and publication standards, globally. As writing is identity work, students must negotiate thought and writing in two or more languages to achieve meaningful self-expression and to represent authentic, authoritative voices in English. Data representing students from 17 different countries and speaking 14 different languages …

“Nothing Much Happens”: The Process Of Constructing Coherent Selves In A Tree Grows In Brooklyn And I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Laytham 2021 Taylor University

“Nothing Much Happens”: The Process Of Constructing Coherent Selves In A Tree Grows In Brooklyn And I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Maya Laytham

English Senior Capstone

In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, respectively, Betty Smith and Maya Angelou vividly paint the places, people, and customs that contextualize Francie and Marguerite’s growth. In fact, the societies to which both the protagonists and the authors talk back contribute greatly to how they express themselves. The interplays between past and present and between personal and public all inform how Smith and Angelou describe and develop the stories of their younger selves. While it might sound strange to find such dynamism in something as apparently inert as written word, the works …

“You Never Get It Out Of Your Bones”: The Christ-Haunted Security Of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird And Go Set A Watchman, Corley E. Humphrey 2021 Liberty University

“You Never Get It Out Of Your Bones”: The Christ-Haunted Security Of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird And Go Set A Watchman, Corley E. Humphrey

Masters Theses

Harper Lee’s novels To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman emphasize the struggle of mid-twentieth century Southern identity as Southerners searched for security, and she does so particularly in her main character, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Throughout the novels, Jean Louise fights to find a balance within herself as she learns to decide what to accept or reject from her Southern culture. Using New Historicism and Southern Female Gender Studies, this thesis analyzes the character development of Jean Louise “Scout” in the novels and the traits she consistently accepts—discrimination and respect, honor of family, grace—and the ones she …

'Wait, Twilight Is A Thing Again?': Examining The Ways In Which Different Social Groups Navigate The Complex Cultural Issues In Twilight, Veronica Buchanan

Undergraduate Research Symposium Podium Presentations

The four books and five movies in the extremely popular Twilight series give readers and viewers a lot to unpack, in both good ways and bad, and have led to fierce debates over the place the series should have in our culture, especially in regard to gender politics. However, most of the discussions of these texts and their cultural impact have tended to lack a robust, intersectional feminist perspective, one that attends to issues not only of gender, but also race, class, and sexuality. This research draws on both fan studies and feminist media studies to examine the various ways …
