Recognizing The Silent Truth: Subversive Silences In Character Development Of Marginalized Identities, Sara L. Bartling 2021 University of Nebraska at Kearney

Recognizing The Silent Truth: Subversive Silences In Character Development Of Marginalized Identities, Sara L. Bartling

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

While looking at literature, theatre, and film and the development of characters, it is essential to acknowledge the intersectionality of various components of one's identity, the multi-dimensional view that all identities are composed of a complex tapestry consisting of multiple identifiers. This thesis will examine the sociological and psychological processes that contribute to the subject identifying with a particular identity, and thereby the discarding of other potentially exclusive identities. Using established theories from Foucault and Spivak, this study will utilize several texts to specifically examine the significance of silence on the part of the subject when placing themselves in one …

Roams, Brittany L. Temple 2021 Seton Hall University

Roams, Brittany L. Temple

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

As individuals, our choices and the subsequent consequences of those choices can seem isolated to our own bubble of existence. In this thesis, “Roams,” a novel about Beck, the adult daughter of an alcoholic mother who disappears, and Jim, her mother’s boyfriend, the chapters seek to challenge that comfortable idea, showing two characters whose lives are only tangentially connected by a single person in common, but who nonetheless each leave an unintentional mark on the other’s life. As “Roams” continues, Elaine’s disappearance will ripple out into the town, extending beyond her daughter and her friend as they contend with family, …

The Realistic Desirability Of Perfection In Thomas More’S Utopia And John Milton’S Paradise Lost, Eryn Tan 2021 Seattle Pacific University

The Realistic Desirability Of Perfection In Thomas More’S Utopia And John Milton’S Paradise Lost, Eryn Tan

Honors Projects

This paper analyzes Thomas More’s Utopia and John Milton’s Paradise Lost to investigate the realistic desirability of perfection. The practices that ensure perfection in Thomas More’s Utopia are realistically applied to society to determine if such practices would be feasible, accepted, or desired in society. Meanwhile, the reactions and comments on the lost perfection of the Garden of Eden in John Milton’s Paradise Lost are analyzed as a template for navigating a fallen, imperfect world. By studying these two literary works together, this paper seeks to investigate the realistic desirability of perfection in society and the effects of chasing perfection.

J.R.R. Tolkien's "Homecoming" And Modern Alliterative Metre, Anna Smol, Rebecca Foster 2021 Mount Saint Vincent University

J.R.R. Tolkien's "Homecoming" And Modern Alliterative Metre, Anna Smol, Rebecca Foster

Journal of Tolkien Research

J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son” is a modern English alliterative verse drama written in the metre of Old English poetry and demonstrating his interest in versification and his skill in writing original alliterative verse in new and versatile ways. Tolkien’s originality also lies in his use of alliterative metre in a play, a genre not written by the early English; in fact, “The Homecoming” is Tolkien’s only published drama as well as historical fiction. While Tolkien bases this work on historical events recounted in the Old English poem “The Battle of Maldon,” he also uses his drama …

Decolonizing The Body, Daniel Miess 2021 Chapman University

Decolonizing The Body, Daniel Miess

English (MA) Theses

The prevailing narrative about California’s history, and in specific the way that it discusses the Spanish Colonial system and the Gold Rush, glosses over the genocide of her indigenous inhabitants and the oppression experienced by those who survived these historical traumas. By focusing on the works of three indigenous poets (Deborah Miranda, Natalie Diaz, and Tommy Pico) who were born in Southern California and whose indigenous history predates White Settler Colonialism in this state, we can gain a fuller picture about the truth of California’s past. Through the lens of Indigenous Queer Theory, we can understand how these three Queer …

A Rhetorical Approach To Assessing Source Credibility: Digital Natives, Lateral Reading, And The Need For Media Literacy Curriculum, Sanna Fogt 2021 Seton Hall University

A Rhetorical Approach To Assessing Source Credibility: Digital Natives, Lateral Reading, And The Need For Media Literacy Curriculum, Sanna Fogt

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract:

The overwhelming amount of (mis)information housed online and on various social media platforms in the age of “fake news” requires the development of a first-year writing curriculum that supports students’ ability to assess source credibility. While both Millennials and Generation Z, or “zoomers,” have been labeled as “digital natives,” recent research indicates that, though these generational groups have grown up with constant access to technology, they are not necessarily experts when it comes to evaluating the credibility of online sources (Belinha 59). In fact, according to the Stanford History Education Group, “young people’s ability to reason about the information …

The Nobility In Seeing Oneself: Unreliable Narration In British Postmodern Fiction, Jessica Marzocca 2021 Seton Hall University

The Nobility In Seeing Oneself: Unreliable Narration In British Postmodern Fiction, Jessica Marzocca

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In an interview in 1989, Kazuo Ishiguro, author of The Remains of the Day, expresses an interest in “the whole business about following somebody’s thoughts around, as they try to trip themselves up or to hide from themselves,” a curiosity that directly correlates to the functionality of unreliable narration (Mason 347). That same interest can spill over into trying to trip up or hide from readers, a jump easily made when considering novels narrated in first-person like The Remains of the Day or Martin Amis’s Money: A Suicide Note, or even Muriel Spark’s third-person novel The Prime of …

Fan Fiction And The Trojan War: Contemporary Euripidean Perspective On The Treatment Of Enslaved Women In The Silence Of The Girls, A Thousand Ships, And For The Most Beautiful, Richard K. Sheldon 2021 Louisiana State University

Fan Fiction And The Trojan War: Contemporary Euripidean Perspective On The Treatment Of Enslaved Women In The Silence Of The Girls, A Thousand Ships, And For The Most Beautiful, Richard K. Sheldon

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines three contemporary novels of fan fiction, authored by women, that retell the Trojan War: Emily Hauser’s For the Most Beautiful (2016), Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018), and Nathalie Haynes’ A Thousand Ships (2019). This study offers a reading of contemporary Homeric reception by analyzing the conversations that the novels initiate between each other, Homer’s Iliad, and Euripides’ tragedies, Hecuba (424 BCE) and Trojan Women (415 BCE). The study establishes a connection between the three authors and Euripides by treating the novels as works of fan fiction. In so doing, the study identifies …

Othering: An Analysis Of Expression In Hip-Hop And South Asian Literature Through Post-9/11 Discourse, Syed Tareq Alam

The critical question this thesis seeks to answer is how a relationship between hip-hop and South Asian literature can be developed in such a way that one is able understand and address both the present and future state of America in a post 9/11 context. To answer this question, three hip-hop songs will be analyzed through their lyrics and instrumentation with a specific focus on their expression of the other: “Cops Shot the Kid” by Nas, “Flag Shopping” and “Patriot Act” by Heems. One novel and play will be analyzed in similar form: The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid and …

T.S Eliot And The Impersonal Theory Of Poetry, Brahim Houban

Dirassat

Literary theories and movements have different phases and characteristics. Modernism as a literary movement has been seen as a remarkable one that shaped the English literature as a whole. Thanks to T.S. Eliot and many others, modernism has become a unique phenomenon and abackbone in English literature especially when it comes to the poetic diction and the role of the poet in society. In the Romantic Era, the poet is attached to his poem and the productions are merely spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. For modernism in general and T.S. Eliot I particular, the poet should be detached from any …

English Undergraduate Distinction Projects

Poetry and rap are dissected using text mining techniques in order to determine overall trends in the words used by both. With this data, the way in which ideas and concepts are expressed can be compared and contrasted as a way of showing the legitimacy of rap as a form of literary expression. Other topics within the paper are: a background of the history of rap and the digital humanities, and an example of a close reading featuring a medieval poem and a rap by Eminem. This demonstrates how even in a traditional way of handling texts, both poetry and …
