Childhood Sexual Abuse In Contemporary Fiction, Alana Baldwin-Joiner 2021 Portland State University

Childhood Sexual Abuse In Contemporary Fiction, Alana Baldwin-Joiner

University Honors Theses

With the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in our society today, analyzing the fiction in which these trauma cases are depicted is more relevant than ever. In this project, I discuss The Color Purple (Alice Walker), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Stephen Chobosky), Swagger (Carl Deuker), and The Pact (Jodi Picoult). I delve into the ways they depict CSA, the cycles of violence involved, and how those cycles of violence are broken and justice is achieved for the literary characters. I argue that this justice is accomplished after each author creates a shift in perspective and in environment …

Sounding Two Notes: Re-Reading Virginia Woolf And Elizabeth Bishop, Cheryl Hindrichs 2021 Boise State University

Sounding Two Notes: Re-Reading Virginia Woolf And Elizabeth Bishop, Cheryl Hindrichs

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Near the end of the first part of Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse (1927), "The Window," the Ramsay family and their invited guests have withdrawn for the evening after a feast of boeuf en daube—the children to bed, the guests to their rooms, and finally Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay to sit across from each other reading. Conscious of her husband's attention, Mrs. Ramsay wishes that he would not disturb her in this pleasant moment of reading but allow her to go on perusing lines of poetry at random and dreaming over them, that he would for once, for …

The Poetry Of Geoffrey Bache Smith With Special Note Of Tolkienian Contexts, Kris Swank 2021 University of Glasgow

The Poetry Of Geoffrey Bache Smith With Special Note Of Tolkienian Contexts, Kris Swank

Journal of Tolkien Research

Following the Great War (1914–1918), J.R.R. Tolkien edited the poetry collection A Spring Harvest (1918) by his close friend, Lieutenant Geoffrey Bache Smith (October 18, 1894 – December 3, 1916), who died of wounds from shrapnel while stationed on the Somme. According to John Garth, it was “one of the many slim, sad volumes of poetry published posthumously as a memorial of those who died in war.” A spring harvest is a barren harvest, but even at his young age, Smith left a number of stirring poems on life, death, and destiny that seem, in retrospect, to have prophesied his …
