Applying Brown And Levinson's Politeness Theory On Lady Macbeth's Speech In Shakespeare’S Macbeth, Mahmood Eshreteh, Yasmin Draweesh
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This paper is an attempt to apply Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory on Lady Macbeth's speech in Shakespeare's Macbeth. By analyzing her dialogues in the play, the researchers try to find the politeness strategies in these dialogues, and the reasons behind preferring the use one strategy over another. After classifying the analyzed selected parts of the play and arranging them according to Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies, the researchers found that power, status and distance play the biggest role in preferring one strategy over the others. Moreover, the findings revealed that Lady Macbeth's ideology leads her to …

Macbeth's Political Imagination: The Struggle For Kingship In Macbeth, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb, Mohammad Khair Rawashdeh
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
Ambition and regicide are two types of evil examined very closely in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth. Hence, ambition is seen in the play as a sin, an attempt to jump the natural order and make a new one, a desire so intense it can lead a person into the hands of evil. Regicide, according to medieval European conventions, is to kill God's anointed king, and so likewise to disrupt the natural and divine order. Macbeth's illegal and immoral kingship brings death, destruction, and suffering to Scotland, whilst the good kingship of Duncan and Malcolm brings victory and happiness; the …

The Female Bildungsroman In Anne Bronte’S: Agnes Grey, Nouh Alguzo
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This paper examines Anne Bronte’s novel Agnes Grey as an autobiographical bildungsroman about the moral growth and development of the female protagonist in Victorian England. The heroine Agnes finds herself propelled into employment as a governess, after her family suffers financial loss, driven by her desire to explore the wider world. The evangelical upbringing of Agnes, as the daughter of a clergyman, plays significant role in developing her strong and selfless character and inspires her to sympathize with the poor. Agnes challenges the patriarchal norms and traditions that treat her as a domestic servant rather than intellectual woman and educator. …

Elements For Pragmatic Semiotics: The Situation As A Locus For Meaning, Al-Saiid Al-Kaiz
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
The author defines meaning as the outcome of a confrontation between a set of possible interpretations and a situation. First of all, by exploring both Peirce and Wittgensteins's contributions, he recalls the foundations of such pragmatic semiotics. Then, from Whitehead's notion of "event", he separates out the concept of "semiotic situations". Next, he defines the grammatical, syntaxic and interpretative elements that compose semiotics. Finally, as an illustration, he suggests we consider the possible contributions of pragmatic semiotics to esthetics

DISCOVERING CAROLINE is the script for an ensemble, a feature-length supernatural drama, set in 1899. Caroline, presumed dead at birth, returns forty years later to the scene of that tragedy, a university nursing school training hospital, where her birth mother still works as a lunch lady. Surrounded by a dozen other characters (thirteen if you count the pig), played against a backdrop of a handful of supernatural events, this script explores familiar love, romantic love, inappropriate love, truth, deceit, death, and the consequences on others when these life events intertwine throughout seventy-seven scenes. Included here is an introduction as well …

Countering Online Misinformation In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Samantha Sparrow Williams
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis encourages the intentional and explicit integration of the best practices in media literacy education within the first-year composition classroom. The nature of FYC, which incorporates such content as research skills and source evaluation, provides an ideal opportunity to address the online misinformation and disinformation that have resulted in growing political polarization and cynicism. Recent findings suggest that these trends can be countered with the teaching of practices like lateral reading to verify a source’s veracity. After first demonstrating the challenges that university freshmen may bring with them to campus, this project makes suggestions for simple, consistent practices that …

Mother Monsters And Monster Mothers From Dracula To Stranger Things, Melissa Dinsman
Publications and Research
Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things is an homage to 1970s and 1980s sci-fi and horror, including Alien and Aliens, Carrie, the Star Wars trilogy, and Poltergeist, as well as buddy adventure films like Goonies and Stand by Me. But it is also, in its obsessive presentation of monsters as mothers and mothers as monsters, a show that takes its 1980s mothering cues straight out of Bram Stoker’s 1890s. Despite its 2016 production date, the Duffer Brother’s Stranger Things presents viewers with very old fashioned ideas of mothering, with Joyce Byers (Wynona Ryder) as the single, but exceedingly pro-active mom from …

Introduced and annotated by Arthur B. Evans In its day, Dorothy Scarborough’s book The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (1917) was considered to be the best scholarly study on the subject. As the author points out in the book’s preface, the sheer size of its corpus was impressive: “the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it ... the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous” (v). Scarborough divided her …

Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing

Short fiction is a format heartily embraced by the Irish literary imagination since the nineteenth century. This paper takes a gastrocritical approach to investigate the role of food in selected stories from the recently published anthology The Art of the Glimpse (2020). It shows that through the years, food and foodways have been valuable tools for Irish writers, providing setting and context, themes and symbols, plot points, conflicts, characterisation, as well as the quintessential epiphanies.

A Static Code Analysis And Pattern Recognition Algorithm-Driven, Quantitative, Mathematical Model-Oriented Risk Assessment Framework Of Cloud-Based Health Information Applications, Dennis B. Park
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to a survey, the healthcare industry is one of the least cloud-adopting industries. The low adoption reflects the healthcare industry's ongoing concerns about the security of the cloud. Business applications, according to another survey, are among the most vulnerable components of business information systems. Many risk assessment frameworks available today, particularly for health information applications, require significant customization before they can be used. This study created a new framework to assess cloud risks specifically for their health information applications, utilizing data-driven risk assessment methodologies to avoid surveys, interviews, and meetings for data collection. For the feasibility study, the open-source …

On September 23, 2020, the New York Post reported that “President Trump had signed an executive order expanding a ban on government agencies receiving sensitivity training involving critical race theory to federal contractors” (Moore). By the time this executive order passed, I had already planned to teach a course titled “Rhetoric of Storytelling” that included a Critical Race Theory (CRT) reading from Aja Martinez advocating for counterstory. In response to the murder of George Floyd and subsequent protests during the summer of 2020, my academic department, like many institutions nationwide, issued a statement in support of Black Lives Matter. All Changelings Have Autism: How To Make A Better Book For Autistic Children, Nadia L. Hitchcock
University Honors Theses
How should a content creator, whether they work in film, literature, or sequential art, approach portrayals of Autistic characters? More specifically, how should these altruistic ideas be translated into a better storybook for Autistic children? This is the challenge that I have addressed with my Graphic Design thesis, by writing and illustrating my own children's picture book. The story itself is a spiritual successor to Old World changeling folktales and All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome (Kathy Hoopman 2006). Though many Autistic people loved Hoopman's book as children, its visual shortcomings and linguistic oversights have marred its intended inclusive, positive message. …

Postcapitalist Desert Visions From Earth To Anarres, David J. Goff
Theses and Dissertations
Human industrial and economic activity around the world—happening either directly in the global North (recall the coal-choked London of Dickens) or, increasingly, in (un)developing nations of the global South because of the North’s demand— has burned and pumped so much CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere that climate has noticeably changed even over the span of a single generation. As long as the world and its people are held in the clutches of the hegemonic capitalist politico-economic system, the environment will continue to degrade, and so will life for all the people of Earth, especially those most vulnerable. …

With the findings of Wood-Barcalow, Tylka, and Augustus-Horwath (2009) as a framework, this essay offers an analysis of two texts portraying fat protagonists: The Summer of Jordi Perez and the Best Burger in L.A. by Amy Spalding and To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin. I examine the authors’ depictions of fat characters to determine if the characters align with Wood-Barcalow, Tylka, and Augustus-Horwath’s (2009) definition of body positivity. Using critical content analysis (Short, 2017), I consider how relationships, environment, and self-concept support and work against body positive attitudes. This essay also includes suggestions for how educators can use these …
