Carrying The Stories Of Las Mariposas: Literacy As Collective And Transformative, Deborah Vriend Van Duinen

Michigan Reading Journal

Literacy is often understood as the acquisition of individual skills and knowledge. In this essay, I explore different approaches to understanding literacy that focus on social meaning-making and action. Drawing on historical examples of literacy learning and my recent experiences in a community-wide reading program focused on Julia Alvarez’s (1994) In the Time of the Butterflies, I use the concept of “carrying stories” to reflect on how literacy learning can be collective and transformative for self and society.

Existentially Guilty: Where Do I Go From Here?, Devontae Wilson

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

Teachers, students, parents, and even politicians have been forced to confront the by-products of not having difficult conversations about race and class. Political pundits are using this moment in history sparked by recorded injustice and the publicized murders of unarmed black people at the hands of law enforcement to demonize Critical Race Theory (CRT), a framework created to analyze how the law is racialized. This portfolio is largely a result of Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop’s “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors” and contextualizing it through my personal experience as a classroom teacher, as a black man in a majority white, female …

Confronting Student Resistance To Ecofeminism: Three Perspectives, Jennifer Browdy De Hernandez, Holly Kent, Colleen Martell

The Seneca Falls Dialogues Journal

Teaching ecofeminism is a dynamic, vital practice, demanding a great deal of both educators and students. At the heart of this essay is the question: how can we teach ecofeminism effectively? In this work, we reflect on our successes and failures teaching ecofeminism within various topics and in different settings. While each co-author of this piece brings ecofeminism into our classrooms, we do so in very different ways and have diverse approaches to making ecofeminist theories and ideas feel vital, necessary, and relevant for our students. In our essay, we aim to offer some productive and provocative suggestions and ideas …

An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann 2021 retired

An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann

Journal of Tolkien Research

Abstract for An Unexpected Study

This essay review interrogates the polemical style of rhetoric in Holly Ordway’s Tolkien’s Modern Reading. It critiques her use of a fictional narrative to represent an adolescent Tolkien, her intertextual criteria, and her dating of Victorian fantasists and their historical moment. It questions her claims about entrenched notions concerning Tolkien, her use of evidence, and her assumptions about her audience. It concludes that Ordway is less interested in Tolkien’s contemporary reading and more interested in creating a new narrative about Tolkien the author.

Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin III 2021 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin Iii

English Language and Literature ETDs

Despite his own high level of literacy and education, the Venerable Bede (672/3–735) inhabited a world in which nearly all personal, social, educational, and political discourse was conducted orally. A thorough understanding of his works will require an understanding of this discourse, but attempts to apply broad theories of “orality” derived from other cultures to early medieval England have repeatedly foundered. This dissertation establishes a set of guiding principles to produce a more nuanced and localized model of discourse in Bede’s England and observes a variety of ways oral and literate forms of rhetoric were employed by political actors in …

Les Formules De Politesse À Valeur Votive: Des Actes De Langage Rassurants Aux Actes Menaçants, Riham Jaradat

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

Ever since Austin has developed his famous Speech Act Theory, it has become common knowledge that the pragmatic value of such acts carry a purely cultural nature. It is established that every linguistic system carries a host of cultural and social characteristics that allow the speech acts to deliver diverse pragmatic ends in a given discourse. This study aims to conduct a discursive analysis to discern the way the vowing act is applied in Colloquial Jordanian Arabic. Given that there is a myriad of ways to use these acts, the study is dedicated to address the mode of using the …

Shakespeare’S Revisionist Historiography Of The Crusades And Crusading, Mufeed F. AlAbdullah 2021 Jarash University

Shakespeare’S Revisionist Historiography Of The Crusades And Crusading, Mufeed F. Alabdullah

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

This paper studies the topic of crusades and crusading in Shakespeare's King John, Richard II, 1&2 Henry IV, and Henry V within the medieval religious, political, and historical contexts seen retrospectively from the perspective of the Elizabethan England of Reformation. It surveys and analyzes Shakespeare's revisionist views of that medieval historical phenomenon, and demonstrates that he addresses the main aspects of that issue with some liberty he gathered from the cultural outlook developed after his country had sailed away from medieval ideologies and politics. Shakespeare looks back and evaluates not only the holy wars directed against the Muslims in …

English Renaissance Tragedy: Kyd’S The Spanish Tragedy And Marlowe’S Doctor Faustus In Perspective, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb 2021 Jerash University, Jordan

English Renaissance Tragedy: Kyd’S The Spanish Tragedy And Marlowe’S Doctor Faustus In Perspective, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

In this paper, I shall be trying to investigate the nature of the English Renaissance drama through two prominent examples: Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy (1556-1857) and Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (1588-1593). In order to carry out this aim Kyd's play (probably performed 1586–7), will be looked at as the first successful English example of tragedy, for its force and originality was widely acknowledged, and Marlowe's play (probably performed 1592) as an artistic expression of the Renaissance spirit, a recreation of the Faust legend. The English idea of a Renaissance tragedy seems here to be a mixture of the ideas …
