English-For-Teaching In Higher Education: Discourse Functions And Language Exemplars, Eun-Young Julia Kim

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

Increasingly more colleges and universities in non-English speaking countries are requiring instructors to teach in English. Although existing research addresses various issues related to using English as a medium of instruction in higher education, few studies have specifically addressed how to provide language scaffolding to college instructors who are asked to teach their subjects in English for the first time. The study builds on Freeman et al.’s (2015) discourse functions for English-for-teaching and presents a refined functional framework to suit college-level classes. It provides authentic language samples to help instructors prepare to teach in English based on the analysis of …

Humor As A Defense Mechanism In 19th-Century Women's Writing, Hannah Mae Shelby 2021 Arkansas State University

Humor As A Defense Mechanism In 19th-Century Women's Writing, Hannah Mae Shelby

Student Theses and Dissertations

Women in Western societies have been repeatedly placed into inferior, gendered roles by their patriarchal societies, which often left them with little hope of autonomy apart from a male companionship. Women writers during the nineteenth century, especially, were chastised for daring to write beyond the sentimental because many male critics and writers believed that women were not capable of complex writing. The women featured in this thesis weaponized humor—such as irony, sarcasm, and narrative quips—to create intriguing narratives while also commenting on gendered oppression. Works by women from the British Regency era to the American fin-de-siècle center on female characters …

The Image Of The Patriot In Three ‎Heroic- Historical English Plays, Elias Khalaf 2021 Al-Baath University, Syria

The Image Of The Patriot In Three ‎Heroic- Historical English Plays, Elias Khalaf

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

This study explores the artistic devices which contribute to the construction of the image of ‎the patriot in three heroic- chronicle English plays, which generally represent the main patriotic ‎concerns of the English Renaissance history plays. The anonymous Woodstock (1592) ‎dramatizes the title character's fervid allegiance to England under the misgovernment of King ‎Richard II, while, on the other hand, Edward III (1592-95) celebrates and memorializes Prince ‎Edward's exploits in his wars against France. Similarly Thomas Dekker's and John Webster's Sir ‎Thomas Wyatt (1603-05) chronicles the title character's opposition to the Spanish rule over ‎England

Stigma And The Social Function Of Fate In The Story Of Túrin Turambar, Clare Moore 2021 Independent

Stigma And The Social Function Of Fate In The Story Of Túrin Turambar, Clare Moore

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper applies Erving Goffman's theories of stigma to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin in order to explore the social function of Túrin's fate throughout the narrative. Interpreting fate as a stigma reveals the role society plays in the tragedy of Túrin's story through the lens of a social model of disability.

Slavery, Motherhood, And Recurring Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Erik Lorenz 2021 Southern Adventist University

Slavery, Motherhood, And Recurring Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Erik Lorenz

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

This paper explores how Toni Morrison, in her novel Beloved, treats the myriad ways in which slavery as a class system inflicted trauma on Black mothers and daughters, and how this trauma repeated itself to ripple outside slavery into freedom. Using historical research, E. P. Thompson’s definition of class, and Cathy Caruth’s work in trauma theory, an analysis of Morrison’s mother characters reveals a pattern: the pressures of the slavery class system warped mother-daughter relationships, inflicting trauma, and the trauma seemed fated to repeat itself over generations. Whether Morrison’s mothers were traumatized by labor demands competing with childcare for the …

Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop 2021 Southern Adventist University

Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The paper “Power Reclaimed and Given: Female Passivity and Agency in Harris, Brand, and Smith” explores representations of women in art in Claire Harris’ “After Image,” Dionne Brand’s “Blues Spiritual for Mammy Prater,” and Ali Smith’s How to be both. Harris’ poem depicts a woman, who is the subject of a male photographer’s photos and who has been objectified and relegated to passivity by the photographer, in the active process of reclaiming the power to create her own identity. Brand’s poem shows Mammy Prater as a woman who, although formerly subjugated and abused, has already reclaimed that power; in …

The Hero's Journey Beyond The Physical, Jasmine Jones 2021 Kennesaw State University

The Hero's Journey Beyond The Physical, Jasmine Jones

Symposium of Student Scholars

How would one go about integrating a theme of acceptance of self and others into an adventure, comedy, fantasy, and family friendly film? In the film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the invisible hand of the screenwriters does just that. The importance of this story is in the story structure. The four main characters are used to exemplify how there is an important relationship between plot and structure. Through this, character transformation takes place both physically and emotionally. The characters are presented as four normal people who were sucked into a game and sent on a quest to solve mysteries …

Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic And Interwar Literature By Elizabeth Outka (Review), James Fitz Gerald 2021 Bentley University

Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic And Interwar Literature By Elizabeth Outka (Review), James Fitz Gerald

English and Media Studies Faculty Publications

Elizabeth Outka begins Viral Modernism with an important and, given our own pandemic present, strikingly relevant question: “why does the deadly 1918–1919 influenza pandemic seem to make so few appearances in British, Irish, and American literature of the period?” (1). Until Outka, critics have largely left questions concerning the flu pandemic not just unanswered but unasked. Despite killing more than 50 million people worldwide—the US suffered more deaths in the pandemic than in World War I, World War II, and the imperial conflicts of Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined—the Great Flu Pandemic has been consistently overshadowed by the Great War …

Fear And Loathing In The Technological City, Michael Paulus

style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">This presentation brings together three interpreters of the city—Jacques Ellul, Hunter S. Thompson, and John of the Apocalypse—to reflect on the future of our technological society. It contrasts rejections of the city, found in Ellul’s style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">The Meaning of the City style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">(1970) and Thompson’s style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">(1972), with an affirmation of the technological city found in the Apocalypse of John.

Implementing A Deliberate Neologism About The Filipino-American Identity Crisis, Gabrielle Sarah Punzalan, Rochelle Harris Cox Dr., Angela Brill 2021 Kennesaw State University

Implementing A Deliberate Neologism About The Filipino-American Identity Crisis, Gabrielle Sarah Punzalan, Rochelle Harris Cox Dr., Angela Brill

Symposium of Student Scholars

Neologisms are words that have recently entered our language but are only just beginning to be accepted as part of daily usage. As the English language evolves, new neologisms are formed while the usage of certain words may fade into relative obscurity. New words are coined to reflect the changing moods and cultural needs of the time. When it comes to critical race theory, neologisms can be used as a method of spreading awareness and addressing a problem. The Filipino American community is a marginalized group that experiences identity disturbance from the duality of both their nationality and ethnicity. Furthermore, …

Shadowcrest Manor, Michaela Bishop

A soft cold breeze flowed throughout the whole house, it carried the scent of the Sea Island cotton and seawater, taking away the smell of dust and stillness. Shadowrest Manor was to become our new home here in Charleston. The manor had been vacant for a while since its last owner had passed away and leaving no will or surviving heir, the plantation was shut down. The outside was a little bit weather damaged however, Father is having the whole house repainted a colonial white, the front columns will be a nice off white to balance the main color. The …

“We’re so old, Becky. Becky, we are so old.” This palindromic couplet came from the ex-boyfriend I hadn’t seen in over ten years. We had been in a brief and mildly dysfunctional relationship ten years before that, back when I was twenty and he was thirty. We had remained friends after our breakup and, after a few years absence, regained contact through the contemporary perpetual This is Your Life-esque reunion of social media.

Serve the guests. Don’t cry. Take your brother for a walk. Your father was such an incredible man. Your father loved you. You were his favorite. I’ll just let everyone else cry while I learn to live with this feeling in the pit of my stomach. Leave her alone. It’s fine if she wants to wear her red velvet dress from last Christmas. She can wear what she wants to the funeral. Touch his hand; it’s the last time you’ll ever see him. I don’t know you, but I can’t stop sobbing in your arms.

On The Way Of Being A Penguin, Sophie Lee

It’s been about three weeks since I came here, to Dominican as an exchange student. My life here is monotonous but interesting, demanding but refreshing, and solitary but too precious. Right now, I am still adjusting to my life. I want to keep this time in my life everlasting by writing it in my laptop. I believe what I am writing will bring me here, and now, whenever I read this. Then, let me start.

You might find me at the end of my days perched on the shoreline at sunset. Some rocky overlook where the wind can blow away smoke from fire. The last embers of my life burn like a fickle memory in a nearby hole I dug, small licks of heat dancing in air brined with salt of the earth. Knowledge that these coals will fade makes me wish to have gone out brilliantly, a blaze of glory instead of here, timing the spread of painkillers in my blood with the increasingly aggressive tide. Because that’s what this is, a small beacon …

Don’t laugh too much or something sad will happen.

If you see a bean on the floor, pick it up or you’ll be sterile.

When pulling weeds, always talk kindly to the poison oak and let them know you will remove them so that other plants can grow. Guarantee you will never get poison oak.
