The Post-Wwii American Picaro As Prophet Of Human Dignity: A Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Flannery O’Connor’S The Violent Bear It Away, And Saul Bellow’S Henderson The Rain King, Elijah Clayton Null 2023 University of Denver

The Post-Wwii American Picaro As Prophet Of Human Dignity: A Study Of Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, Flannery O’Connor’S The Violent Bear It Away, And Saul Bellow’S Henderson The Rain King, Elijah Clayton Null

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The picaro, a rascal or rogue who tells his or her life story, is an important but understudied figure in midcentury American letters. Critics of the 1960s, such as R.W.B. Lewis, often discussed the picaro and the picaresque, but recent American scholarship has not revisited the role and importance of this figure and genre.

This study employs the methodologies of historicism, formalism, and intellectual history to explain how American authors in the period after WWII used the picaro and picaresque, a figure and genre that originated in 16th century Spain, as vehicles for their explorations of the question of human …

Recognizing Possibility: Reflections On The Messianic Dimensions Of Being, Language, And Space, Khalif M. Vernon 2023 University of Texas at Arlington

Recognizing Possibility: Reflections On The Messianic Dimensions Of Being, Language, And Space, Khalif M. Vernon

English Theses - Archive

This thesis seeks to reveal the messianic potentialities that inhere in the fundamental categories of experience. I analyze diverse sources in western intellectual history, from the classical period to our contemporary epoch, to discern techniques to think through our collective malaise, that is to both identify the dynamics that have produced our malaise and how to use thought and recognition as acts of generative resistance. I will argue throughout that the common modalities of experience: language, space, and historicity, even if they reveal themselves as lack, through their (dis)concealment gesture at messianic forms of life, and I will try to …

Adult Women In The Wizarding World : Rowling’S Ideal Female In The Harry Potter Novels, Grace Ann McCarthy 2023 Montclair State University

Adult Women In The Wizarding World : Rowling’S Ideal Female In The Harry Potter Novels, Grace Ann Mccarthy

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study focuses on the perceptions of gender and its expressions in the Harry Potter series, primarily regarding the adult female characters in the novels. Through the Harry Potter novels, J. K. Rowling asserts her belief that women must fit into a traditional role that a heteronormative society dictates or else they are not a “true” woman. Rowling’s recent public transphobic statements also lend credence to this heteronormative perspective. This phenomenon is seen through the analysis of the “good” adult female characters—Lily Potter, Molly Weasley, and Minerva McGonagall. Their treatment in the text differs from the “bad” adult female characters—Dolores …

Professional, Personal, Societal : The Detrimental Effects Of Identity Revolving Around Career In Kazuo Ishiguro’S Remains Of The Day, Salvatore Cerchio 2023 Montclair State University

Professional, Personal, Societal : The Detrimental Effects Of Identity Revolving Around Career In Kazuo Ishiguro’S Remains Of The Day, Salvatore Cerchio

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In Kazuo Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day, Mr. Stevens immerses himself in his work as a butler until it becomes his identity. In Stevens’s quest to be superlative at his job, he accepts his role in society, adopting an extreme view of dignity that constrains him rather than providing him a sense of self. Although his interpretation of dignity and obedience to the social hierarchy helps him fulfill his desire to be a butler of the highest order, it hampers his development as a person. In discussing Stevens, critics have focused on his desire to fulfill his duties as …

The Ghost Of The Neo-Slave Narrative : Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing And The Evolution Of The Black Gothic, Kabria Wimbush 2023 Montclair State University

The Ghost Of The Neo-Slave Narrative : Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing And The Evolution Of The Black Gothic, Kabria Wimbush

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Beloved by Toni Morrison, while clearly a neo-slave narrative, functions as a transition between the neo-slave narrative and the Black Gothic genre. Jesmyn Ward expands upon the Gothic elements in Beloved in her novel Sing, Unburied, Sing. When examined together, the two novels demonstrate how the Black Gothic was influenced by the neo-slave narrative. Where Beloved examines the effects of slavery on those who were directly victimized by it, Sing, Unburied, Sing shows how the lingering effects of slavery still exist in modern times. Ultimately, Ward offers possible courses of action to make the future more inclusive and diverse without …

An Investigation Of Trauma Cycles And The Omnipresent Parent In A.S. King's Please Ignore Vera Dietz, Emily Orlando 2023 Montclair State University

An Investigation Of Trauma Cycles And The Omnipresent Parent In A.S. King's Please Ignore Vera Dietz, Emily Orlando

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In 2010 A.S. King published her young adult novel Please Ignore Vera Dietz. The novel focuses on several characters who are navigating both intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts while also coping with various traumas. While Young Adult Literature does not usually prominently feature parental figures, King chooses to include several parents in the text, and even gives one parent a first-person narrative. Due to King’s unusual choice she is able to illustrate the manner in which trauma can move from one generation to the next. These depictions of complete “trauma cycles” allows for a more comprehensive and empathetic understanding of how …

Season Of The Chanterelles And Other Stories, Kirsten Ferguson 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Season Of The Chanterelles And Other Stories, Kirsten Ferguson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This collection of short literary fiction springs loosely from a contemplation of the enduring influence of Washington Irving’s Gothic in the Hudson Valley. The first story, “Life Is Good,” centers on a fictionalized account of a morbidly obese bear named Allen and a resilient child, Henny, who forms an unlikely bond with the captive animal, reflecting on themes of nature, independence, and abandonment. The second story, “Recipes for Radicals,” delves into the COVID-19 pandemic with a diary-like structure and an underlying theme of confronting moral injustices and the complexities of justice and revenge. In “The Wild Thing,” the protagonist, Meredith, …

Masks And Mirrors: The Authorial Selfhood Of J.M. Coetzee’S Elizabeth Costello And Susan Barton, Emily R. Peters 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Masks And Mirrors: The Authorial Selfhood Of J.M. Coetzee’S Elizabeth Costello And Susan Barton, Emily R. Peters

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This thesis examines the authorial characters of Elizabeth Costello, from the novel of thesame name, and Susan Barton, the protagonist of the novel “Foe,” both authored by South African-born writer J. M. Coetzee, through the ontological concept of the Heideggerian Dasein. Both fictional characters contend with the issues of alienation of Self and the struggle for reciprocal Othering imposed upon them by the social constructs of their authorhood and struggle for an authentic self, specifically in view of the performative nature of their gendered roles and the issue of Coetzee’s male authorhood.
