As Composition and Rhetoric rose in disciplinary status and academic legitimacy the discourse practice of negation, the positioning of texts in oppositional binaries that set the “new” over the “old,” the “novel” over the “familiar,” became embedded in academic tradition, seeming to be an inherited part of scholarship instead of an individual’s rhetorical choice and deliberate ethos strategy. Negation, when one idea or set of ideas constructed by another is critiqued, advocated, and/or redeveloped by another scholar, is a discourse practice firmly established in the Rhetorical Tradition as part of Socratic dialogues, reappears in “modern rhetoric”, and remains today as …

There have always been rogues who dared to go against the traditional "intellectual" writing style of science and academia, a style that seems bent on transcending the "merely personal." Those who take this risk are embracing the rhetorical tradition of pathos, one that goes as far back as Aristotle. Current academic trends support a genre devoid of pathos and lacking true ethos—a deviation from classic rhetoric, and one that supports the Cartesian split of mind-body dualism. Neurological studies done by Antonio Damasio and others suggest that a holistic view is a more accurate picture of how a human soul functions. …

This thesis seeks to establish a direct relationship between the archetypes of Carl Jung, primarily the Shadow, and early 20th century literature. The Shadow is best described as our darker selves, the primitive unconsciousness that subtly invades our waking moments. Modern society has sought to suppress this Shadow, which has led to repression and potential psychoses. Many authors of the late Victorian and early modern period address the problems with societal expectations in their works. This thesis will explore the writing of Henry James, Bram Stoker, Robert Louis Stevenson, and T. S. Eliot to see how they deal with Jung's …

Publications and Research
Bookshops and the spaces occupied by the early modern book trade have received attention as social environments. This study of the early publication history of Christopher Marlowe's poems -- Hero and Leander, his translation of Lucan, as well as the lyric now known as "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" -- shows that, the bookshops may also turn out to be agents shaping the fate of books, authors, and literary afterlives. Shifting our emphasis from the individual bookseller to the networks of a plurality of human agents and environments allows us to consider the intersections of various commercial and …

FIVE YEARS BEFORE the publication of his novel Castorp, the Gdansk writer Pawel Huelle published a short piece of the same title in the essay collection Inne historie (1999), the title of which-translated as either "other stories" or "other histories"-consciously plays with the difficulty of writing a history of Gdansk, a theme to which almost all of the short pieces in this collection somehow return. The essay tells the story of a literary correspondence between a Lvov pastor and the writer Thomas Mann, in which Mann voices regret over some unelaborated ideas and abandoned storylines in The Magic Mountain. …

Matthew Henson's 1912 memoir, A Negro Explorer at the North Pole, seems to adopt a vindicationist discourse of work, merit, and recognition that accords with Booker T. Washington's vision for racial progress, but Henson's narrative actually demonstrates how such a discourse inadequately resolves the complex tangle of race, masculinity, and citizenship during the Jim Crow era.
