“If The Engine Ever Stops, We’D All Die”: Snowpiercer And Necrofuturism, Gerry Canavan

Applying Mark Fisher’s “capitalist realism” and Subhabrata Bobby Banerjee’s “necrocapitalism” to the study of sf, this article reads the post-apocalyptic French comic Le Transperceneige (1982) and its film adaptation Snowpiercer (2014) as critiques of necrofuturist visions of the future. Necrofuturism posits a future that is doomed to continue modern capitalism’s unsustainable and immoral practices even as those practices become more and more destructive and self-defeating; films such as Snowpiercer interrupt this well-rehearsed vision of a world of universal death to open the mind to new possibilities for alternative futures. “The Civil War,” writes Robert Penn Warren, “is, for the American imagination, the single greatest event of our history” (3). Indeed, it has been estimated that the American imagination has been inspired to the tune of some 60,000 historical books on the subject (Lafantasie). Kate Chopin, probably best known for The Awakening and short stories like “The Story of an Hour,” spent her adolescence in a divided and tumultuous St. Louis during the Civil War. Like the women in her family with whom she lived, including her mother, grandmother, and two aunts, young Kate was a southern sympathizer (Ewell 7). …

Among the many rules taught to students as they engage in the writing process is the instruction to remain objective and avoid writing in first-person. Though there are certainly instances in which it is inappropriate for students to use the word 'I" in their writing, students often misunderstand this instruction and their writing suffers as a result. Students often produce writing which lacks voice in their struggle to remain objective. This project seeks to prove the importance of voice in all forms of writing and provide a method for teaching students how to include voice in their own work. The …
