William Faulkner And Alcoholism : Distilling Facts And Fictions., Quintin Thomas Chipley 1956- 2015 University of Louisville

William Faulkner And Alcoholism : Distilling Facts And Fictions., Quintin Thomas Chipley 1956-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Opinions about alcoholism as a construct, and opinions about William Faulkner’s alcoholism as a fact, have varied. By considering carefully the role alcohol plays in human society, and by looking at these matters of concern through several different lens models, we can explain both why Faulkner was attracted abnormally to alcohol and why others around Faulkner have responded ambivalently to him, to his drinking and to his fiction. Faulkner’s alcoholism was rumored and denied during his life (1897-1962), evaded and contested after his death, and consistently affirmed after 1980. Attention to David Minter and Joseph Blotner, biographers, reveals much about …

Catching My Breath, Amanda Faith Conner 2015 Missouri State University

Catching My Breath, Amanda Faith Conner

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Catching My Breath is a collection of four fictional, graphic novel scripts that examine themes such as identity, trauma, death, and family relationships. Each story takes place in different coastal cities in Maine, including Kennebunkport, Sandy Neck Beach, Old Orchard Beach, and Crescent Beach. These specific locales create a distinctive atmosphere for each story within the collection, as well as provide the places from which the protagonist's recollections originate. This collection uses the visual and verbal technique of comics to illustrate the protagonist's childhood and adulthood identity construction.

Death Of A Journalist, Ryan Mark Hubble 2015 Missouri State University

Death Of A Journalist, Ryan Mark Hubble

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to capture through a novel the contradictory feelings of loss and hope the Millienial generation is experiencing as once-great institutions in the U.S., such as print journalism, are overcome by the rapid expansion of an increasingly connected, digital society. My thesis is the first six chapters of my novel, Death of a Journalist, and lays the foundation for the conflict between the past and the present the protagonist endures throughout the rest of the work. By focusing on the protagonist's inability to leave his own past and the dying newspaper at which he works, I …

The Experiences Of African-Born Women Faculty And Administrators At Colleges And Universities In The United States, Oyibo H. Afoaku

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to document the experiences of African-born women faculty and administrators at colleges and universities in the United States. The study explored the factors that motivated African-born women to immigrate to and extend their stay in the United States beyond completion of their education; factors they perceive as constraint on their quest for self-empowerment and identity as foreign students, college instructors, and/or administrators, and parents; and factors that have enabled them to adapt to their host culture and achieve their educational and professional goals even though they had to contend with multiple challenges associated with …

Critical Editions And The Promise Of The Digital: The Development And Limitations Of Markup, Alexandra Haehnert 2015 Portland State University

Critical Editions And The Promise Of The Digital: The Development And Limitations Of Markup, Alexandra Haehnert

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

This paper seeks to explore the technology underlying current digital editions—which I maintain are wanting in their exploitation of the digital medium—in more detail; its focus is squarely on editorial praxis, not on editorial theory (leaving aside the fact that all praxis is informed by specific theoretical assumptions). Neither am I concerned with questioning whether digital techniques render traditional critical editing obsolete; in fact, I am convinced that they do not, and my paper proceeds from this standpoint. Similarly, I am only marginally interested in exploring the augmentation of digitized texts with multimedia elements as described by Boot and van …

Imagine That! Word Balloons In Children's Picture Books, Erika Schnatz 2015 Portland State University

Imagine That! Word Balloons In Children's Picture Books, Erika Schnatz

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

When did speech bubbles first appear in children’s picture books? In what ways have speech bubbles been co-opted from comic books to serve picture book narratives? What does this example suggest about the future of children’s books co-opting the visual language of comic books? The visual language of comics has slowly permeated American popular culture since the first regular newspaper strip, Richard Felton Outcault's The Yellow Kid, back in 1895. From the onomatopoetic visuals in the campy '60s Batman television series and pop art paintings of Roy Lichtenstein, to the never-ending string of superhero-based blockbuster movies today, comics …

Social Media Blogs-To-Books: Changes In Content And The Editorial Process, Kyra Hearn 2015 Portland State University

Social Media Blogs-To-Books: Changes In Content And The Editorial Process, Kyra Hearn

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

Publishers have recently released a number of books that derive their content from Tumblr or Twitter accounts. Previously, it was more common to see publishers release books that derived their content from blogs. Since all of these social media platforms produce content in different ways, how does this influence—if at all—the publisher's editorial process? Also, how does the content change—if at all—from the original social media platform to its presentation in a book?

Gawain The Exile: Reading 'Sir Gawain And The Green Knight' In A Postcolonial Context, Hannah Vaughan 2015 Clemson University

Gawain The Exile: Reading 'Sir Gawain And The Green Knight' In A Postcolonial Context, Hannah Vaughan

All Theses

In his essay 'Reflections on Exile,' Edward Said writes that the experience of the exile transcends definitions that seek to confine it to the traditionally defined post-colonial period, noting that 'in other ages, exiles have similar cross-cultural and transnational visions, suffered the same frustrations and miseries, [and] performed the same elucidating and critical tasks.' This principle, decisive in the articulation of post-colonial theory, nonetheless finds numerous points of resonance in pre-colonial periods. Many texts completed centuries before Said or even colonialism existed seem to demand to be read within postcolonial contexts. The state of exile that Said describes is one …

Shifting Identity/Shifting Discourse: Re‐Naming In Contemporary Literature By Zadie Smith, Jeffrey Eugenides, And Salman Rushdie, Jennifer Krengel 2015 Dominican University of California

Shifting Identity/Shifting Discourse: Re‐Naming In Contemporary Literature By Zadie Smith, Jeffrey Eugenides, And Salman Rushdie, Jennifer Krengel

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Re‐naming one’s self is an empowering act of self‐definition; re‐naming others is an attempt to codify, contain and censure identity. Re‐naming emerges as a compelling theme in contemporary transnational literature, appearing in three notable texts: Zadie Smith's White Teeth (2000), Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex (2002) and Salman Rushdie's memoir Joseph Anton (2012). These texts depict stories of diaspora, the forced migration or dispersal away from a homeland. Communities of diaspora negotiate between two cultures: an originary culture and the culture of the new geographic location. From these negotiations emerge a third, hybridized identity that reimagines the majority culture and challenges structural …

"So Vexed Me The Þouȝtful Maladie": Public Presentation Of The Private Self In Hoccleve's My Compleinte And The Conpleynte Paramont, Lauren M. Silverio 2015 University of Connecticut - Storrs

"So Vexed Me The Þouȝtful Maladie": Public Presentation Of The Private Self In Hoccleve's My Compleinte And The Conpleynte Paramont, Lauren M. Silverio

Honors Scholar Theses

The scholarship surrounding the life and work of Thomas Hoccleve is relatively young and lean compared to the tomes of knowledge that have been circulated about the slightly older and vastly more popular Geoffrey Chaucer. Up until the second half of the 20th century, Hoccleve came through history with the unfortunate moniker of the "lesser Chaucer." What this insult neglects, however, is that Hoccleve was more than just a lowly clerk who spent his days admiring and emulating the so-called Father of English Literature. Thomas Hoccleve deserves recognition for conceiving and creating works that are impressive both in their form …

E-Books And Author Payments: The Affect Of Digital Publishing On Author Royalties, Missy Lacock 2015 Portland State University

E-Books And Author Payments: The Affect Of Digital Publishing On Author Royalties, Missy Lacock

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

From digital rights management to retail costs, controversy has always accompanied ebooks— although it hasn’t even been a decade since Amazon first released the Kindle. This discussion, however, explores another question: How have e-books affected author payments?

The most significant change in author payments has been e-book royalty rates. While the standard rates are seven and a half percent for trade paperback books and fifteen percent for hardcover books, royalty rates for e-books are twenty-five percent—the same today as they were when e-books first flooded the market in 2009. While royalty rates are higher for e-books than their printed counterparts, …

This project involves examining the influence of the department store and other Victorian inventions on women’s rights. By analyzing the works of Elizabeth Gaskell, Emilé Zola, George Gissing, and Amy Levy, I explore the different representations of shopgirls and consumers in nineteenth century fiction and how they connect to modern women in the online community.
