Translating And Literary Agenting Anna Holmwood’S Legends Of The Condor Heroes, Hong DIAO 2021 Lingnan University

Translating And Literary Agenting Anna Holmwood’S Legends Of The Condor Heroes, Hong Diao

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The role of literary agents in translation is intriguing yet under-researched. The mechanism of literary agenting vis-à-vis the initiation, production, and promotion of translated literature is under-explored. How literary agenting affects translation epistemologically, aesthetically, and technically remains uncharted territory. This dissertation attempts to fill the gap by investigating how Anna Holmwood, a translator-cum-literary agent, conceives and conducts the English translation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan (“射雕英雄傳”), a wuxia (武俠) magnum opus by Jin Yong (金庸).

It first employs an NVivo-based theme analysis to unearth how the translation has been received and perceived by general readers. Next, it develops the notion of …

Issues In Translating Tarifit Tales, Hanan Bennoudi 2021 Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines, Univérsité Ibn Zohr, Agadir, Maroc

Issues In Translating Tarifit Tales, Hanan Bennoudi

Dirassat

Oral literature is a sold as man; it has existed in the Amazigh language for many centuries. Among the innumerable genres of oral literature, folktales( Tinfasin Tarifit) remain the most important because they have played an important role in touching the heart of our collective being and permitted to people, young and old, to shift beyond the boundaries of reality. However, Tarifit tales have remained terrain cognita to this day because they were shutdown and stuffed in the family and village context.

Interactive Translation In Cyberspace : Translator-Reader Dynamics In Online Translation Of Children’S Novels, Xuemei CHEN 2021 Lingnan University

Interactive Translation In Cyberspace : Translator-Reader Dynamics In Online Translation Of Children’S Novels, Xuemei Chen

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This thesis investigates a new mode of online literary translation characterized by translator-reader interactions. Its focus is on Internet-mediated exchanges between a non-professional translator Xiao Mao and his readers in the production, dissemination, and reception of his online translations of three novels by E. B. White from 2000 to 2001. By employing the methodological framework of actor-network theory (ANT), this thesis sets out to unearth not only the interactive dynamics among heterogeneous (human and non-human) actors but also how these engagements shape the translations at different stages.

This thesis first unravels how readers in the New Threads online community participated …

以譯而治 : 清前期多語文政治下的翻譯政策研究, Ke DENG 2021 Lingnan University

以譯而治 : 清前期多語文政治下的翻譯政策研究, Ke Deng

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The Rhetorical Mediator: Understanding Agency In Indigenous Translation And Interpretation Through Indigenous Approaches To Ux, Nora Karina Rivera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In 2018, I became involved in a collaborative community-based project to co-organize an event with the purpose of collecting resources to help in the professionalization efforts of Indigenous translators and interpreters. Drawing on Indigenous and decolonial theories, this interdisciplinary study examines the work done during this event through a user experience (UX) research lens that analyzes the various ways in which Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) and Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) can better support Indigenous language practices. The colonization of the Americas brought a layer of issues that continue to affect the way in which Indigenous communities conduct their …

Poems And Translations, Rome Hernández Morgan 2021 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Poems And Translations, Rome Hernández Morgan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This document is separated into two parts, a collection of original poems and a collection of translations of the crônicas of Rubem Braga. The collection of poems, titled, “Because I Never See You,” attempt to parse the complexities of familial and intimate relationships, addiction, and BIPOC experience. The collection of translations attempts to offer a small sample of the crônicas of Rubem Braga (1913-1990), a Brazilian journalist who is known throughout Brazil for “elevating” the form of the crônica from ephemera to the literary.

The Jordanian Novel In Postmodern Context, Hamed Alalamat 2021 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Jordanian Novel In Postmodern Context, Hamed Alalamat

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the Jordanian culture is gradually impacted by the globalization process of late capitalism, this study argues that many Jordanian novels exhibit a number of postmodern characteristics, such as blurring boundaries and disrupting hierarchies, the use of pastiche as a compositional technique, formal fragmentation, and the weakness of utopian imagination. Adopting Fredric Jameson’s theory of postmodernism as a framework, the study explores ten Jordanian novels written between 1986 and 2016 to demonstrate that the modernization process and the cultural changes in the Arab world, in general, and in the Jordanian society, in particular, have increased the density of postmodern features …

Persian Elements In Kashmiri Marsiya (Elegy): A Case Study Of Sang (Stone), Mufazil Ali Malla, Barkat Ali Latoo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Marsiya or elegy poetry is a literary genre that is often sung whenever a dear person has died. Marsiya has a visionary and secularist outlook. The knowledge keeps countries alive, both politically and socially, and economically. In the Shia sect of Islam, the act of writing and proposing elegy on Imam Hussain A.S. Martyrdom finds an important place, although it is not entirely restricted to it. In Northwest India, by the end of the 11th century, Persian-Arabic words were developed and the languages spoken at the time were brought to the Indian language. Kashmir has been said to have had …

Problems With Perceptual And Cognitive Idiosyncrasies In Li Wenjun’S Translation Of The Benjy Section Of Faulkner's The Sound And The Fury, Aaron L. Moore 2021 Sichuan University

Problems With Perceptual And Cognitive Idiosyncrasies In Li Wenjun’S Translation Of The Benjy Section Of Faulkner's The Sound And The Fury, Aaron L. Moore

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article “Problems with Perceptual and Cognitive Idiosyncrasies in Li Wenjun’s Translation of the Benjy Section of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury,” Aaron Lee Moore conducts a close explication of a 2014 English-Chinese edition of part of The Sound and the Fury. Li Wenjun’s translation of the Benjy section of The Sound and the Fury is certainly admirable in its graceful rendering of Faulkner’s complex, idiosyncratic prose style into accessible Chinese—and particularly laudable in its meticulous tracking of the a-chronological sequence of Benjy’s stream of consciousness narrative. However, problems arise in the translation due to an …

Translators' Prefaces To Literary Works A Means To Visibility Of Invisibility?: A Cda Approach To Analyze Translators' Prefaces As Part Of The Paratext, Sarah M. Fayed Ms. 2021 The British University in Egypt

Translators' Prefaces To Literary Works A Means To Visibility Of Invisibility?: A Cda Approach To Analyze Translators' Prefaces As Part Of The Paratext, Sarah M. Fayed Ms.

Computer Science

The preface as part of a book’s paratext is of great importance in terms of introducing the book to the reader. In the context of a translated book, it is essential because there are two elements to expand on: the source text (ST) and the translated text (TT). This paper aims to conduct a comparative analysis to understand more about: 1. The elements and features of the preface and also 2. The visibility/invisibility of the translators and 3. How this affected the decision making in the translation process. The proposed research question is how does the relationship between invisibility, social …

Autologous Stem Cell-Derived Β Cells For Diabetes Cell Replacement Therapy, Kristina G. Maxwell 2021 Washington University in St. Louis

Autologous Stem Cell-Derived Β Cells For Diabetes Cell Replacement Therapy, Kristina G. Maxwell

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Autologous stem cell therapy is a promising treatment for patients with diabetes worldwide. Previous stem cell-derived β (SC-β) cell protocols were unable to efficiently differentiate multiple patient induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into stem cell-derived islets (SC-islets), containing insulin-secreting SC-β cells. Recent updates targeting the actin cytoskeleton have enabled the differentiation of 14 diabetic and nondiabetic stem cell lines into SC-islets. We used genetic engineering, specifically CRISPR/Cas9, to correct the diabetes-causing mutation in stem cells from patients with Wolfram Syndrome. The genetically engineered SC-β cells functioned and had a composition similar to nondiabetic SC-β cells, unlike the unedited SC-β cells …

La Fantascienza Italiana Dalla Prospettiva Degli Studi Sulla Traduzione E Postcoloniali, Simone Brioni Dr. 2021 Stony Brook University

La Fantascienza Italiana Dalla Prospettiva Degli Studi Sulla Traduzione E Postcoloniali, Simone Brioni Dr.

Department of English Faculty Publications

A Study Of The Problems Encountered By Interpreters In Translating Criminal Case Examination Questions From Thai Into English, Brian Keith Cutshall 2021 Faculty of Arts

A Study Of The Problems Encountered By Interpreters In Translating Criminal Case Examination Questions From Thai Into English, Brian Keith Cutshall

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The official language used in the Thai judicial system is the Thai central dialect. All documentation and testimony must be submitted in this language. Because of this, all documentation in a foreign language that needs to be submitted to the court must first be translated into Thai. Additionally, non-proficient speakers of Thai (NPT’s) require the services of an interpreter to render their foreign language testimony into Thai during court proceedings. The goal of this research was to study and better understand the types of problems that interpreters in court have in interpreting criminal case examination questions from Thai into English. …

Automatic Subtitling And Machine Translation In Aiding English To Thai Simultaneous Interpretation, Nutdanai Sornchai 2021 Faculty of Arts

Automatic Subtitling And Machine Translation In Aiding English To Thai Simultaneous Interpretation, Nutdanai Sornchai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation (MT) technology in recent years, their uses in simultaneous interpretation (SI) have been a subject of interest. This research, conducted to study these technologies in aiding the SI process, has four participants interpreted (English to Thai) three comparable speeches with automatic subtitling, with MT, and without subtitling. An audience then rated the interpretation renditions and answered a comprehension questionnaire. According to the participants, automatic subtitling allowed them to cross-check their translation, while MT provided a way to decrease the cognitive effort. According to the audience, automatic subtitling has a …

Interlingual Morphology And Wakean Topology, Stephen Valeri 2021 Dartmouth College

Interlingual Morphology And Wakean Topology, Stephen Valeri

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

As an example of limit literature (literature that exhausts the entirety of what is possible in a given form), Finnegans Wake has been an inspiration for the theories of figures like Kristeva and Derrida to reveal the structural and linguistic operations of texts generally. In defamiliarizing the processes of word formation, the Wake compels us to attend to morphology’s structuring role in a work. My project focuses on Phillipe Sollers and Stephen Heath’s French translation of part of the concluding section of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake to observe how the attempt to approximate Joyce’s interlingual morphology in translation contributes to …
