การประชุมในบริบทของประชาคมอาเซียนทวีจำนวนตามการพัฒนาและกรอบความร่วมมือที่เพิ่มขึ้นในภูมิภาคนี้ แต่อุปสรรคในการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษยังคงเป็นประเด็นสำคัญที่ลดประสิทธิภาพการประชุม งานวิจัยนี้ได้เก็บข้อมูลจากการสัมภาษณ์ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียน พบว่าการกำหนดให้ใช้เฉพาะภาษาอังกฤษในที่ประชุม บ่อยครั้งกระทบต่อความเข้าใจเนื้อหาการประชุมและการมีส่วนร่วมของผู้เข้าร่วมจากแต่ละประเทศ โดยเฉพาะการประชุมในระดับปฏิบัติการมักได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดเพราะต้องเผชิญปัจจัยที่ทำให้การสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษเป็นอุปสรรค เช่น ปัจจัยด้านงบประมาณจ้างล่ามที่มีจำกัด ความสามารถใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมที่หลากหลาย เป็นต้น ผลการวิเคราะห์บทสัมภาษณ์ยังชี้ว่าการจัดจ้างล่ามเพื่อลดอุปสรรคด้านการสื่อสารในที่ประชุมที่เหมาะสมที่สุดสำหรับประชาคมอาเซียนคือใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษากลางในการล่ามสู่ภาษาอื่นๆ ถึงกระนั้นก็ยังติดประเด็นเรื่องนโยบายของประชาคมอาเซียนเองที่กำหนดให้ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาทางการภาษาเดียว ไม่สนับสนุนให้มีการจ้างล่าม ซึ่งแตกต่างโดยสิ้นเชิงจากสหภาพยุโรปที่สนับสนุนหลักพหุภาษานิยมหรือนโยบายภาษาทางการและภาษาปฏิบัติการที่หลากหลาย ปัญหาดังกล่าวทำให้ผู้เกี่ยวข้องในการประชุมในบริบทอาเซียนต้องหาทางออกให้การสื่อสารในที่ประชุมเกิดขึ้นได้ด้วยวิธีต่างๆ ตามอัตภาพ นอกจากนี้ยังมีความเป็นไปได้น้อยมากที่ประชาคมอาเซียนจะจัดตั้งหน่วยงานอำนวยการล่ามในที่ประชุมเหมือนที่สหภาพยุโรปมี

ล่ามคู่ความมีความสำคัญอย่างมากในฐานะผู้อำนวยความสะดวกในการสื่อสารในการดำเนินคดีหรือระงับข้อพิพาทตามกฎหมาย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในปัจจุบันซึ่งการประกอบธุรกิจสามารถทำได้อย่างไรพรมแดนระหว่างผู้ที่ใช้ภาษาแตกต่างกัน เมื่อล่ามคู่ความเป็นผู้ที่ได้รับการว่าจ้างโดยตรงโดยคู่ความฝ่ายหนึ่ง ล่ามคู่ความย่อมต้องคำนึงถึงผลของคดีที่ผู้ว่าจ้างคาดหวังและการรักษาผลประโยชน์ของผู้ว่าจ้างในขณะปฏิบัติหน้าที่ งานวิจัยนี้จึงเป็นการศึกษาบทบาทและการปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของล่ามคู่ความและความจำเป็นในการต้องปฏิบัติหน้าที่เกินขอบเขตเพื่อรักษาผลประโยชน์ของผู้ว่าจ้าง รวมถึงมุมมองของผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพกฎหมายต่อการปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของล่ามคู่ความ โดยการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการสัมภาษณ์แบบกึ่งมีโครงสร้างซึ่งกลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 13 ท่าน ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยล่ามคู่ความและผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพกฎหมายและใช้การวิเคราะห์แก่นสาระ ซึ่งผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่าการทำหน้าที่เป็นล่ามคู่ความโดยไม่ปฏิบัติตนเป็นผู้ไกล่เกลี่ยและไม่ปฏิบัติหน้าที่เกินขอบเขตนั้นเป็นสิ่งที่ต้องกระทำในทุกกรณีโดยไม่มีข้อยกเว้น ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับหลักการทั่วไปและจรรยาบรรณของล่ามที่จะต้องสื่อสารความหมายของต้นฉบับเป็นอีกภาษาหนึ่งโดยไม่มีการตัดทอนต่อเติม เปลี่ยนแปลง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาและหาแนวทางการแปลศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ในตำรา Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, Fifth Edition ของ Glen O. Gabbard จากคำศัพท์ที่คัดสรรทั้งสิ้น 30 คำ โดยมีสมมติฐานของการวิจัยว่า แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทของคริสติอาเน นอร์ด แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความและยึดความหมายของฌอง เดอลิล แนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาอังกฤษของอิงโก แพลก แนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ของปีเตอร์ นิวมาร์ก และหลักเกณฑ์การบัญญัติศัพท์ของราชบัณฑิตยสถานของมงคล เดชนครินทร์ จะสามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในกระบวนการแปลคำศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ที่คัดสรร เพื่อให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายของคำศัพท์ได้อย่างถูกต้อง มีลักษณะของความเป็นศัพท์เฉพาะทาง ผลการวิจัยแสดงให้เห็นว่า แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท แนวทางการแปลแบบตีความและยึดความหมาย แนวทางการสร้างคำในภาษาอังกฤษ แนวทางการแปลคำสร้างใหม่ และหลักเกณฑ์การบัญญัติศัพท์ สามารถนำมาใช้เพื่อแปลคำศัพท์ทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ได้ตามสมมติฐาน

In his article "Authorship in Burroughs's Red Night Trilogy and Bowles's Translation of Moroccan Storytellers" Benjamin J. Heal discusses Paul Bowles's and William S. Burroughs's varying interrogation of the constructed nature of authorship. In his study Heal focuses on the publication history of Burroughs's Cities of the Red Night (1981), which was written with considerable collaborative influence and Bowles's translation of illiterate Moroccan storytellers, where his influence over the production and editing of the texts is blurred as are the roles of author and translator. In her article "Ginsberg's Translations of Apollinaire and Genet in the Development of his Poetics of 'Open Secrecy'" Véronique Lane analyzes the extent to which the journals, letters and poems of Allen Ginsberg are marked by constant reference to literary models that give just as much weight to French as to American writers. In his article "Literary Creolization in Layachi's A Life Full of Holes" Maarten van Gageldonk discusses the publication of Larbi Layachi's 1964 book by Grove Press based on a transcription and translation by Paul Bowles. Both Bowles and the editors at Grove Press made numerous alterations to the content and form of Layachi's tales in order to make them more accessible for readers. In the process, Layachi's book became a "cultural creole" (Hannerz). This study examines the translators’ invisibility in postcolonial translated Palestinian fiction. On one hand, this analysis revolves around the ethical stance of translators towards authors in a postcolonial theoretical framework. On the other, it brings postcolonial translation scholars’ approaches into practice and examination. The importance of the DSS for biblical textual criticism has not been rightly appreciated on the aspect that very few commentaries or critical study of a particular biblical text make use of it. My dissertation is built around an annotated translation of Eduard von Keyserling’s 1907 essay, “Über die Liebe.” The author’s citations are often made from memory and consequently, are not always entirely accurate. This fact is discussed and inaccuracies are corrected.

Chapter One begins with an overview of the historical background of the Keyserling family. It includes biographical material that describes the author’s life and experiences, and introduces his illustrious forbears. It also points to the writers and philosophers who influenced the author’s thinking.

Within this project I endeavor to translate a series of poems from seven postmodern female Spanish poets, exploring the challenges and idiosyncrasies of not only the migration between languages, but those specifically between Spanish and English as well as those particular to poetry translation. Of course, there are inherent limits to this process.
