The early nineteenth century was characterized by a dynamic literary discussion and debate over the nature and effects of human relationships. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley, two of the foremost writers of the period, experimented with and drew conclusions about differing images of marriage within their works. Making use of this public literary genre, the couple engaged in a conversation with one another as they explored and refined their views and judgments of relationships including their own. This work examines the juridical aspects of the current Egyptian and Tunisian Constitutions adopted after the Arab Spring. Along with the legal analysis of these two manifestations one more element is also a subject of this commentary – possible political issues that can surface from the interpretation of some controversial articles. The second part of this study focuses on the compatibility between the premises of the Islamic Sharia, the Islamic culture and tradition, and the core values of the contemporary modern democratic states. For nearly a century, readers have known the story of Myrtle Wilson, infamous literary mistress of F. Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. Fitzgerald's Tom Buchanan is married to a woman who is the picture of wealth and elegance, and yet he is drawn to this woman about whom readers know very little, and about whom we hear only in a retrospective vantage of the partial observer Nick Carraway. Mrs. Wilson puts on airs and takes blows, an her death is as graphic as any of literature's fallen women. And like Myrtle, Fitzgerald casts his fictionalized Flushing as symbolic of a …

This paper compares three manifestations of the Faust figure found within Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Dr. Faustus (1592), Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe’s Faust (1808), and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) to explain why the Faust figure’s strictly individualized utopia will never reach fruition.

In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In this paper, I analyze the metaphoric and symbolic associations of birds with wisdom and knowledge, which was triggered by the long historical observation of these animals from sides of scientists and writers. In particular, I focus on the use of animals to create metaphorical symbols in literature and on the representation of birds in active figures in the narration in "The Saga of the Volsungs", "The Poetic Edda", Richard Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelungs" and the Brother Grimm's Version of "Cinderella". Charles Olson's theory of history, "istorin", harkens back to Herodotus. As Olson explains it, this term means "to find out for yourself". Olson's understanding of the concept is significantly informed by classicist J.A. K. Thompson.
