Dinitia Smith’s The Honeymoon is the first complete biofiction of the woman enduringly known by her masculine pen name, George Eliot. It tells the story of a precocious provincial English girl who challenges the conventions of her middleclass upbringing as she pursues a writing career in Victorian London, moves in with an alreadymarried man, becomes one of the greatest living British novelists, and then marries John Cross, a man twenty years her junior whom she’d long called “nephew.” Whether or not Eliot’s brief marriage to Cross constituted a “happy ending” depends on how you interpret the harrowing incident that took …

Although scholars of both literature and history have made arguments for Christopher Marlowe’s religious belief in Catholicism, the Church of England, and even atheism (which could have been conflated with both by different parties during his lifetime), few consider the belief system of the Polish Brethren, a precursor to Unitarianism established by one Faustus Socinus. This essay uses historical and social network analyses to suggest a close tie between Marlowe’s acquaintances and believers in Socinianism. Clues in Doctor Faustus and Massacre at Paris suggest Marlowe’s skepticism concerning the doctrines of Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Calvinism. Furthermore, repeated references to Poland and …

Joan of Arc has stood alone among legendary figures of the Middle Ages in her capacity to be appropriated and employed for a host of modern noble causes. However, a fresh examination of Joan’s words and deeds reveals that her aims and objectives were not the universal “greater goods” of modern activists who have used her story to craft their own narratives. This thesis explores how Prospero’s power is conveyed through voice in The Tempest, as well as how Shakespeare frames the relationship between Prospero, Ariel, and Caliban, primarily in Act 1, Scene 2 of the play. Then, it examines how in Une Tempête Césaire gives a more active role to Ariel and Caliban in and how giving these characters more space to speak gives them more agency and power.

This research is an explorative study into the user expectations of interpreters in the domains of Patent Litigation, Public Health, and Cultural Heritage in Thailand. The study attempts to determine the importance of the accurate interpretation of terms in these highly-specialized fields with specific technical (in the case of court and medical interpreting) and cultural terminology. The researcher also attempts to identify user preferences for extra-linguistic features in interpreters. Results show that participants rated the delivery of the key message as higher priority than the translation of terminology. This paper proposes a cross-cultural examination of the societal satire of the countries of America and Soviet Russia by way of comparison of two satiric novels. Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt satirizes the business values of capitalist America and the materialism perceived in an economic system based on the mass production and mass consumption of goods. Yurii Olesha’s Envy uses Babbitt in intertextual conversation to perform a similar critique of the Soviet Russian society and values of the same time period. This essay looks at food through the lens of immigration by analyzing the work of migrant writers in Italy. Comfort food, acquired taste and fusion cuisine are used to illustrate different stages of the migration process. Migrant writers have often used food as a metaphor to describe their longing for their homeland, for an idealized time and place when they felt safe, secure in their identity. Cooking and eating, sharing and learning culinary traditions foster integration and develop acquired tastes in the destination culture. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อแปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรจากหนังสือการ์ตูนเรื่อง อะเวนเจอร์ส : สการ์ เลต วิช (Avengers: Scarlet Witch) โดยเน้นที่การถอดความหมายของอวัจนภาษาโดยใช้การ วิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบ (multimodal analysis) ร่วมกับกลวิธีการแปลตัวบทชนิดหนังสือการ์ตูนที่ เสนอโดยมิฮาล โบโรโด (Michał Borodo) 3 แบบ กล่าวคือ กลวิธีการแปลแบบลด (condensation) กลวิธีแบบเพิ่ม (addition) และกลวิธีแบบแปลง (transformation) ทั้งนี้เพื่อสร้างทางเลือกในการแปล สำหรับแก้ปัญหาด้านเทคนิคและการถ่ายทอดทางวัฒนธรรม ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแนวคิดของการ วิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบและกลวิธีการแปลดังกล่าวช่วยให้แปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรได้สำเร็จ มีกรอบ ข้อความที่ใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบลด 92 กรอบ แบบเพิ่ม 49 กรอบ แบบแปลง 104 กรอบ และที่ใช้ กลวิธีแบบตรงตัวหรือตีความ (ไม่ใช่กลวิธีแบบลด เพิ่ม หรือ แปลง) 339 กรอบ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า ในบรรดา 3 กลวิธีการแปลที่เสนอไปนั้น มีการใช้แบบแปลงมากที่สุด เพราะเป็นการผสมผสานกัน ระหว่างกลวิธีแบบลดและแบบเพิ่ม ไม่เน้นไปในทิศทางใดเพียงทิศทางเดียว มีความยืดหยุ่น เอื้อให้ ผู้แปลลดหรือเพิ่มบทแปลได้ตามความประสงค์ แม้ว่าการแปลตัวบทที่คัดสรรนี้จะสำเร็จและ ได้ผลดีเป็นส่วนใหญ่ ทว่ายังมีเนื้อหาในต้นฉบับบางส่วนที่แนวคิดและกลวิธีดังกล่าวยังไม่สามารถ แก้ปัญหาที่พบได้ทั้งหมด เช่นปัญหาทางเทคนิค เพราะยังได้บทแปลที่มีความยาวมาก ยังไม่สามารถ บรรจุลงในกรอบข้อความได้ อีกทั้งการแปลโดยใช้การวิเคราะห์หลากรูปแบบนั้นมีความเป็นอัต วิสัยทำให้การถอดความหมายจากต้นฉบับเดียวกันนั้นมีความเป็นไปได้หลากหลาย

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลนวนิยายซึ่งใช้รูปแบบการนำเสนอเป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการถ่ายทอดสารในต้นฉบับ โดยนำนวนิยายเรื่อง Beloved มาเป็นกรณีศึกษา เพื่อแสวงหาแนวทางการแปลและวิธีการแก้ปัญหาในการแปลที่เหมาะสมกับตัวบทลักษณะดังกล่าว กรอบทฤษฎีหลักซึ่งนำมาใช้ในการศึกษาตัวบทต้นฉบับ ได้แก่ การแปลวรรณกรรมตามแนวคิดของฟอร์ตูนาโต อิสราแอล และทฤษฎีภาษาศาสตร์สังคม นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยยังได้นำเอาทฤษฎีการแปลพื้นฐานอื่นๆ มาประกอบการศึกษาตัวบทต้นฉบับด้วย ซึ่งได้แก่ ทฤษฎีวาทกรรมวิเคราะห์ ทฤษฎีการแปลแบบยึดความหมาย การแปลวรรณกรรมตามแนวคิดของวัลยา วิวัฒน์ศร และทฤษฎีวัจนกรรม หลังจากที่ได้นำทฤษฎีข้างต้นมาประยุกต์ใช้แล้ว พบว่า แนวทางการแปลวรรณกรรมของฟอร์ตูนาโต อิสราแอลและทฤษฎีภาษาศาสตร์สังคมสามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ร่วมกันในการแปลและแก้ปัญหาที่พบในตัวบทประเภทนี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี

Abstract: This essay explores the encounter between Latin American indige- nismo and avant-garde movements such as Futurism through an analysis of avant-garde literary magazines and Peruvian avant-garde poetry with Futurist tendencies. The first section begins with the Amauta magazine (1926–30), edited by the Peruvian Marxist José Carlos Mariátegui (1894–1930), who promoted an indigenous agenda while also censuring and applauding Futurism. The second section briefly investigates the Chilean literary journal Nguillatún (1924), whose founding manifesto toyed with Futurist principles while simultaneously turning to Chile’s indigenous culture. In addition, I analyse Gamaliel Churata’s Boletín Titikaka (1926–29), which promoted linguistic experimentation with indigenous …

During the period of military government in Argentina, Brazil (1964 –1982) and the present day communist Cuban regime, a machinery of cultural repression was established in these countries, these states had a systematic plan of cultural repression of any kind of opposition, dictatorships had an organized and sophisticated operating control over the press and all publications. The dissident writers examined in this dissertation developed strategies of resistance that depended largely on allegory to carry their messages against their respective oppressive regimes.
