Depersonalization Disorder (DPD) is considered both under-researched and under-diagnosed. A variety of reasons have been proposed for the under-diagnosis of DPD, including the high frequency of depersonalization as a symptom and comorbidity of DPD with other disorders. Under-diagnosis of DPD has also been attributed to inadequate diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV-TR, as it lists only four criteria and only one specifically addresses the phenomenon of depersonalization. Several groups of researchers have proposed more comprehensive and in-depth conceptualizations of DPD. Further, common biases in clinical decision-making, such as an over-reliance on cognitive heuristics and the use of prototypes, can contribute to …

In 1967, Jack Kerouac appeared on the French service of the Canadian Broadcasting Service on the program Le Sel de la a Semaine. This Icarus Films release takes a fascinating look at Kerouac’s connection to Quebec where his parents are from. This interview by Fernand Seguin took place just 2 years before Kerouac’s death, making the program all the more poignant.

Late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Americans, much like twenty-first-century Americans, had a hard time imagining how a heterogeneous, mobile and growing population could be brought under one ideological and governmental roof. And for many prominent Americans in the early days of the nation, the lingering issue of the “Indian problem” posed its own peculiar challenges. Timothy Dwight (1752–1817), author, President of Yale College, and minister of the town of Greenfield, Connecticut. Dwight voiced his concerns through a variety of genres, including the pastoral-epic poem, Greenfield Hill (1794), and Travels in New England and New York (1822).

A prominent theme in Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain is that redemption from the brutality of war may be achieved by retreat from the “metal face” of the contemporary age and return to a healing agricultural work ethic. In this context, the author makes recurrent reference to the classical topic of the “Golden Age,” a lost paradise on earth. He introduces this topic first as it appeared in Hesiod’s Works and Days, expressive of a profoundly pessimistic view that human history has been one long deterioration. I cleaned my room early in the spring of 2009, sorted laundry and cleaned off my oft-cluttered desk. In the process I found an old Mead Composition Notebook from a Film and Literature course I took at the College of Southern Idaho. Inside the back cover I discovered a page of useful information. The charts and measurements included: a multiplication table, 12 other tables intended to measure everything from paper, drugs, liquid and time, metric nomenclature and, finally, conversion tables from the metric system into American standard systems of measurement. In this thesis, I examined the lives of my great-grandparents, Oscar and Emma Swett. Oscar began a homestead in the Uinta Mountains in 1909, which he successfully ran for nearly sixty years. My grandmother was born on the ranch, and my own father spent much of his time there. I look at how land policy changed from encouraging ranching and farming in the early 1900's to tourism and recreation in the 1960's, with the coming of the Flaming Gorge Dam. The lives of my great-grandparents and their children were shaped by these changes and they felt the consequences of the …
