As globalization continues to draw the world into closer economic and intellectual dependence, massive tracts of informally designed communities in Istanbul are being cleared to accommodate the growing infrastructure of the modern, tourism-driven city This attempt to purge the city of its ‘squatter’ heritage is startling and raises questions of cultural integrity in urban development. Istanbul’s desire for expanded global investment is particularly apparent in the object of this study, the blended district of Kartal. Riverside Ranch was one of the first homesteads built in Colorado's Roaring Fork River Valley in the 1880s. The project site was a stop for the railroad and stage coaches travelling to nearby Aspen and a successful agricultural and ranching operation for decades. In the mid-twentieth century, the site transitioned into use as an asphalt mixing plant for the Colorado Department of Transportation. When the landscape architect began work, the site was essentially a brownfield in need of rehabilitation as it was host to multiple rundown historic buildings and remnants of the asphalt plant. In this paper, we revisit the eddy viscosity formulation to highlight a number of important issues that have direct implications for the prediction of near-wall turbulence. For steady wall-bounded turbulent flows, we make the equilibrium assumption between rates of production (P) and dissipation (ε) of turbulent kinetic energy (κ) in the near-wall region to propose that the eddy viscosity should be given by vt ε/S2, where S is the mean shear rate. We then argue that the appropriate velocity scale is given by (STL)-1/2 k1/2 where TL = k ε is the turbulence (decay) time scale. The …

The formation of urban areas is a function of locations of residence and workplaces. Urban areas grow because more residents move in the area due to economic, life style, or other opportunities. This research presents a relationship between average commuting travel time and population and land area of metropolitan areas with more than 750,000 population in the United States. The hypothesis is that in spite of significant variation among large and small urban areas, the relative residence- employment locations follows a general and predictable pattern. This work contributes to the third leg of the sustainability paradigm by addressing socially equitable communities in the field of Planning. It uses a case study of neighborhood planning in Seattle, Washington as its basis for linking meaningful public participation with social capital. It uses a thoughtful qualitative framework to measure social capital in primary and secondary sources and bases these parameters with expert knowledge from scholars within the social science fields.

The City of Arlington acquired the Blackland Prairie site in 1998 after a group of concerned citizens identified its value as possibly the last blackland prairie remnant site in the city. Encouraged by the Arlington Conservation Council, the land was purchased by the city to be held as permanent open space. In its current condition, the site remains in transition. Efforts by volunteers have helped maintain native prairie grasses on approximately half of the site. The eastern half however, has remained untouched since acquisition. Invasive grasses, woody and herbaceous plants continue to proliferate in this area, leaving relatively few native …

Based on evidence, numerous advisory boards and scholars insist engineering education must change (NSB, 2007; McKenna, Froyd, King, Litzinger, & Seymour, 2011) and that hands-on, inquiry-driven, project-based learning pedagogies can enhance STEM education (Boyer & Mitgang, 1996). These pedagogies have formed the core of architectural education since the Renaissance and have been in continuous use since that time. As such, engineering educators can benefit from observing how architecture students learn and understanding how they are taught. Likewise, architecture can benefit from applying the group-based learning strategies employed by engineering teachers who use studentcentered, project-based pedagogies. Trans-disciplinary approaches hold particular merit.

Since the Geddes Town Hall School House was moved to Eastern Michigan University, it has been used intermittently by professor's to host classes and to teach children about the history of schools. This paper presents a seismic design procedure for self-centering precast post-tensioned bridge piers. The piers presented in this manuscript consisted of concrete filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes. A large set of 84 piers with different design parameters were analyzed using finite element models. The backbone curve of each pier was developed and bilinearized. The idealized backbone curves were used to develop a set of empirical equations that were able to reproduce the bilinearized backbone curve of a given pier. The discovery in 2007 of a prehistoric post-built enclosure at Lismullin, Co. Meath, during archaeological investigations in advance of the construction of the M3 motorway is, arguably, the most significant Irish archaeological discovery of recent times. This appendix summarises a commissioned specialist report on the spatial and archaeoastronomical features of the enclosure.
