This difficulty is exacerbated by expected population growth, creating a need for 60% more food worldwide by 2050 to feed a population of 9.3 billion. How we produce food affects local economies, the cultural vitality of communities, and the health of regional ecosystems. In the 2013 spring quarter, the City and Regional Planning Department at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo partnered with the City of Goleta to develop a vision plan for the Old Town area. The collaboration between the University and the City included two (2) community meetings and four (4) weekend engagement activities. This vision plan was created and written specifically for the residents of Old Town Goleta. The primary reason for its existence is to produce development and planning ideas for the City of Goleta.

Current bicycle models assume average speed along the route and among routes and travel time is proportional to distance. There is no method that determines realistic cycling time based on change in speed due to topography. Our research proposes a model for the development of bicycle infrastructure based on reducing travel time and level of difficulty. We identified that topography, human power, and riding speed have strong relationship and we developed bicycle travel time model where speed is a function of human power and topography. Charleston's Naval Yard resembles a ghost town today, but it was once the city’s most active industrial district. It employed thousands of South Carolina workers who built warships and Navy infrastructure throughout the 1900s. When the Admiral presided over this bustling base, he lived at Quarters A. This social epicenter hosted military ceremonies, weddings, and PR visits from celebrities. Charles Lindbergh, Helen Keller, and FDR are some of the notables who walked these halls—halls that are now silent. Since the 1996 decommissioning of the base, Quarters A faces deterioration. Although exterior condition is poor, the interior is well-preserved. The purpose …

The City of Bell, a charter city of Los Angeles County, is a densely-developed community located approximately eight miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. The City is composed of two distinct districts; the original “center city” is the residential and commercial core of the City, while industrial uses are concentrated in the Cheli Industrial Area to the northeast. The two districts are connected by a narrow strip of land along the Los Angeles River and the I-710 Freeway. Bell is relatively small in area—2.81 square miles, or 1,798 acres. Concrete is plastic and highly manipulatable. Its characteristics and the forms it takes are vastly diverse and its history as a building material is broken and nonlinear. By charting the trajectory of its manifestations and uses over time, as well as the trajectories of constituent things (chairs, pneumatic structures, blocks, and relevant artwork), I’ve reached an understanding of what some possible valuable futures for concrete might look like. I have proposed three of these possible futures in doodle form. The doodles appear later in this book.

The incredible urban growth of Ho Chi Minh City has prompted urban expansion into the newly developed District 7. The Phu My Hung urban area is an attempt to create a parallel city to Ho Chi Minh City along the guidelines of master plans submitted in 1993 by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill; Kenzo Tange Associates; and Koetter Kim & Associates. The final master plan for the area incorporates elements of sustainable development, walkability, heightened connectivity, and connection with nature. The demonstration of landscape performance benefits has become increasingly important in landscape architecture practice and in communicating to interdisciplinary audiences. This project introduces four built streetscape projects investigated in the 2012 Landscape Architecture Foundation Case Study Investigation (CSI) program, including a large-scale permeable pavement project in Charles City, Iowa, and American Society of Landscape Architects' award-winning projects in Missouri, California, and Colorado. Following the case studies, several compelling performance benefits of these projects are presented, such as safety and accessibility and water and energy conservation.
