The Ex-Coal Mining City Of Sawahlunto Revisited:Notions On Revitalization, Conservation And Urban Development, Widjaja Martokusumo
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The structural change of Sawahlunto, Indonesia from a mining-based to a tourism-based economy has triggered environmental problems and challenges. Revitalization combined with conservation efforts became a priority in order to maintain the cultural dynamics of the ex-coal mining city. Cultural heritage conservation utilizing the urban fabric and mining-related installations has been criticized due to its emphasis on beautification. This paper argues that historic urban fabric contributes significantly to place making but these endeavors need strong political leadership. The case of Sawahlunto reveals the important nexus between physical intervention, rehabilitation of socio-economic activities and the problem of institutional development, which is …
Following Industry's Leed : Municipal Adoption Of Private Green Building Standards, 2010 University of Maine School of Law
Following Industry's Leed : Municipal Adoption Of Private Green Building Standards, Sarah B. Schindler
Faculty Publications
Local governments are beginning to require new, privately constructed and funded buildings to be “green” buildings. Instead of creating their own, locally-derived definitions of green buildings, many municipalities are adopting an existing private standard created by members of the building industry: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). This Article explains and assesses the privately promulgated LEED standards. It argues that the translation of LEED standards, which were intended to be voluntary, into law raises several theoretical and practical problems. Specifically, private green building ordinances that rely on LEED do not ensure a reduction in the negative local environmental impacts …

400,000 metal “feathers” are anchored into 3,150 routered stainless steel moveable stalks, which can be mechanically controlled to transform the façade to allow more or less light into the building. The 1,280 motorized elements can be closed to create a more solid enclosure, follow the position of the sun, or be entirely open to allow maximum solar exposure.

An Economic Impact Study Of The "Boom" Period Of Baseball Stadium Redevelopment, 2010 Claremont McKenna College
An Economic Impact Study Of The "Boom" Period Of Baseball Stadium Redevelopment, Emily Mcnab
CMC Senior Theses
The intention of this study is to analyze the economic impact of redeveloped Major League Baseball stadiums opened between 1991 and 2004. Using two empirical models, including an event study, this impact analysis captures the economic conditions of the cities during the opening year of the stadium, as well as the prior conditions leading up to the opening of the stadium, along with any lingering effects or gradual changes in conditions. The impact was measured in relation to the Metropolitan Statistical Areas corresponding to the 18 ballparks included, specifically looking at the impact on employment rates and per capita personal …

Construction To Begin On Uga Special Collections Library Building
Georgia Library Quarterly
The article reports on the start of the construction for the University of Georgia Special Collections Library in Athens in January 2010. It will reportedly house the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library on Georgia history and culture, the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collection, which has more than 100,000 audio and video recordings and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. The building's use of state-of-the-art storage and security is also discussed.

Re-Designing The 'Great Australian Dream': Creating A More Sustainable Housing Future, 2010 Edith Cowan University
Re-Designing The 'Great Australian Dream': Creating A More Sustainable Housing Future, Eko Pam
Theses : Honours
Sustainable design is a buzzword in the field of architecture, yet very few houses built in Western Australia last year had an environmentally friendly focus. Through much debate and research, designers now have a thorough understanding of the environmental impact ofhousing (Kibert, 2005; Roaf, 2001; Yeang, 1995). The result is that architects worldwide are now offering a more sustainable housing model. These houses are expensive and look very different to the popular project homes. Despite this environmental awareness, the homes Western Australians build appear to be growing larger, with little regard for their future sustainability. There is reluctance among Australians …
Feasibility Study Of Solar Driven Underground Cooling System, 2010 University of Nebraska at Lincoln
Feasibility Study Of Solar Driven Underground Cooling System, Michel E. Shafik
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Thesis, and Student Research
In the United States the peak electrical use occurs during the summer. In addition, the building sector consumes a major portion of the annual electrical energy consumption. One of the main energy consuming components in the building sector is the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. This research studies the feasibility of implementing a solar driven underground cooling system that could contribute to reducing building cooling loads. The developed system consists of an Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) coupled with a solar chimney that provides a natural cool draft to the test facility building at the Solar Energy Research Test Facility …

Leadership, Libraries, Leed For The Future, Kathryn S. Ames, Greg Heid
Georgia Library Quarterly
The article discusses the use of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles in the design of the modern public library. It is stated that an LEED-certified library will have lower costs in energy, systems replacement and maintenance through the use of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting and efficient heating and air conditioning, but that due to special materials, the up-front expense is higher. The inspection of the facility throughout its construction is also noted.
