A Spiritual Journey: Redefining The 21st Century Catholic Church, Kevin R. Correia 2010 Roger Williams University

A Spiritual Journey: Redefining The 21st Century Catholic Church, Kevin R. Correia

Architecture Theses

With an increasing Catholic population and diminishing vocations to the priesthood, Catholic parish communities are rethinking their church buildings, as they are forced to combine with other communities. The design of a Catholic Church and parish center that respects the tradition of the past and embraces the contemporary religious, architectural, and social needs is the vision for the 21st century Catholic Church. Catholic churches must respond to the Second Vatican Council’s amendment to have a greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. The design focuses on the procession, moments of use, and light that guide the spiritual journey throughout …

Material Imagination In Digital Culture, Mark Cabrinha 2010 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Material Imagination In Digital Culture, Mark Cabrinha

Architecture

Only 8 years ago when I began teaching, integrating digital media in the design studio was hampered by institutional politics and lack of hardware accessibility. Now students come to my studio with dual monitors and are multitasking maniacs with a host of distractions and a subtle reluctance to explore and test ideas physically. As design culture becomes more and more a digital culture, perhaps the fact so much digital work looks the same is not only due to a fairly basic understanding of tools and skills, but a lack of material imagination. Digital fabrication in association with the virtual prototype …

Implementation Of Building Information Modeling In Architectural Firms In India, Aakanksha Luthra 2010 Purdue University - Main Campus

Implementation Of Building Information Modeling In Architectural Firms In India, Aakanksha Luthra

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an integrated process of generating and managing a building by exploring a digital model before the actual project is constructed and later during its construction, facility operation and maintenance. BIM has been adopted by construction contractors and architects in United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) to improve the planning and management of construction projects. On the contrary, Indian contractors seem to have made a head-start by using BIM in their projects, but the architects in the nation have still not embraced this new thinking and technology as a part of their way of working. …

North Texas Stakeholders: Perceptions Of Extensive Green Roofs, Matthew Heath House 2010 University of Texas at Arlington

North Texas Stakeholders: Perceptions Of Extensive Green Roofs, Matthew Heath House

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Green roofs are not a new technology. The first recorded green roof was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife Amyitis who missed her lush homeland (Osmundson 1999). However, since the late 1990s, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social significance beyond its seemingly simplistic description. The term has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and urban heat islands, for large scale mitigation of storm water run-off, and for maximum utilization of urban land (Cantor 2008). This research examines perceptions about extensive green roofs held by developers, city officials, architects, …

Multi-National Licensure In Landscape Architecture: Searching For Its Impact On The Profession, Madhavi B. Sonar 2010 University of Texas at Arlington

Multi-National Licensure In Landscape Architecture: Searching For Its Impact On The Profession, Madhavi B. Sonar

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

This thesis summarizes the knowledge base and understanding of key informants regarding multi-national licensure in landscape architecture, a topic made timely because of the increase in international practice by landscape architects, and differences in the profession's standards and regulations globally. It also examines the potential impacts of multi-national licensure on the profession. To accomplish this, the thesis examines licensure practices in both landscape architecture and architecture (which is more familiar with issues of international practice,) and it focuses on implications of the issues on professional practice and academic practice in landscape architecture. This research is based on the hypothesis that the …

Designers' Perspectives Of Walkability And Accessibility Of Dart's Downtown Transitway Mall In Dallas, Texas, Vaidehi Niteen Gupte

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Providing quality urban spaces including plazas and pedestrian malls encourages use of the Central Business District (CBD) and stimulates a vibrant atmosphere for casual strolling, window shopping, and browsing (Rubenstein, 1992). Dallas, Texas, which in many people's minds defines the term `automobile city', has developed and implemented a visionary plan since the early 1990s' for using light rail as a tool for economic growth and community development. Thus, Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART's) starter system of light rail opened in June 1996, and a city that grew up with the automobile embraced transit as an integral part of its future …

Suburban Landmarks In North Arlington: Perceptions Of Experts And Non-Experts, Su-Yu Cheng

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Each individual perceives the world differently and attains knowledge in distinct ways (Rapoport 1977). With regard to perception about specific places, some individuals function as "insiders." This means their perceptions are engaged with place through daily experiences familiarizing them with the landscape. Others function as "outsiders," ¬¬unconcerned with or unaware of landscape events, thereby perceiving only the surfaces meaning of such events (Dearden 1984, Craik 1970, Bourassa 1991). One example of this dichotomy between insiders and outsiders can be found among design experts and non-experts. Design experts, such as landscape architects, architects, and planners, are directly involved with landscape aesthetics …

Gobiernos Locales, Desigualdad Social Y Violencia, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq.
