China’s rapid development has altered the city’s landscape on a massive scale, continually eroding the delicate urban tissue of old Beijing. Such dramatic changes have forced an aging architecture to rely on chaotic, spontaneous renovations to survive the ever-changing neighborhood. In addition, poor standards of hygiene have turned unique living space and potential thriving communities into a serious urban problem. Hutongs are gradually becoming the local inhabitants’ dumpster and the haven for the wealthy. Adhocracy Sara Denney The Situationists of the 1960’s were cultural revolutionaries critical of passive consumerism and encouraged the reawakening of everyday life. In the spirit of the Situationists, and operating as an “ad-hocing” machine, this project proposes a machine to repurpose objects of everyday life -- reimagining what things might become and transcending limits of their inherent definitions. Why can’t a stroller be a shower head? Categories by default create opposing forces within a situation. International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Bubb, Bengler, Grünen, and Vollrath (2015) identified six environmental comfort factors and ordered them from most important to least important (smell, light, vibrations, sound, climate and anthropometry). This paper attempts to verify whether this suggested order of comfort-related factors also applies to the expectations of aircraft passengers. For this purpose, two studies were carried out. First, a survey was conducted among 183 aircraft passengers between 19 and 64 years old. In this survey, respondents were asked to rank six comfort factors by selecting the most important factor from 15 pairs of factors (e.g. light versus smell). This project is an interdisciplinary architectural design of a funicular Japanese onsen utilizing the compressive strength of thin-shell concrete. A section of this project was also built to scale on the Cal Poly campus in the Architectural Engineering department's High Bay facility. Whether as teachers listening to students, as designers ‘pitching’ designs to clients, or critics writing about historical spaces, we use speech and gesture to describe interiors. We assume that the interior does not speak on it’s own, but must be spoken for. How do designers, curators, and guides talk interiors into existence? How, more generally should we speak of the interior? Tanahku Indonesia was a week-long, architecture and interior design exhibition showing local earth-based materials to reveal their potential as an integral part of Indonesia’s creative economy development. Curated by Yandi Andri Yatmo and Paramita Atmodiwirjo, the exhibition was held in dia.lo.gue Artspace in Central Jakarta, Indonesia from 8 to 12 November 2017. This exhibition attempted to reveal the materiality of earth-based materials across a broad spectrum, which was not limited to the physical presence of the materials, but more as a reflection of knowledge that was grounded on the deep understanding of their context.
