Linden Place is a Federal-style residence located in Bristol, Rhode Island on 1.8 acres of land, including three outbuildings. The mansion was constructed in 1810 by Russell Warren and is significant under Criteria B and C in the areas of two of its residents and its architecture. Original owner, George DeWolf and his family had strong ties to the triangle trade and was one of the largest importer of slaves in the country during the nineteenth century. Samuel Colt, grandson of DeWolf, was a respected business man who played an important role in the rubber industry in Bristol and eventually …

The battlefield of the Nankou Campaign was the earliest battlefield of China’s Second World War, which covered an extensive area of about 700 km2 on the north west of Beiping at the border between Hebei and Chahar Provinces. The Nankou Campaign is recalled recently after being obscured for decades. Unfortunately, without a preservation system like the National Park Service, the sites in the battlefield, such as the Great Wall, have been left in ruins for over 70 years. This capstone is a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the Colt estate stable in Bristol, RI by analyzing two possible adaptive reuse scenarios. The two scenarios the report focuses on is a special event venue and a horse stable and training facility. The goal of the report is to examine which scenario would be a feasible option for the existing structure while maintaining its historical integrity. There are a wide range of applications for three-dimensional (3D) data in archaeology, and a diverse array of methods for collecting and analyzing those data. In this article, free 3D photogrammetry software (Autodesk 123D Catch) is used to document a series of grave markers. The data are subsequently exported to Geomagic Design X to demonstrate and briefly discuss the various potential analyses that might be used to illustrate the effects of preservation treatments and marker degradation through time. Not only is vandalism increasingly subject to digital documentation, but the aesthetic nature of vandalism itself is different as a result of the digital. No longer is vandalism a local destructive act, it has become an act performed primarily for broadcast to global markets. Ted’s House, named after the previous owner, is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan at 826 Vine Place. The house is now owned by the non-profit Old House Network, which is using the house for educational classes on old house repairs. The house is currently in an interior demolition and structural stabilization phase. The roof and porches were replaced in 2012. In the interior, most of the walls have had the plaster or dry wall removed exposing the studs. This report was written as my final project for Master Program in Historic Preservation. Using U.S. Department of the Interior standards, I completed an intensive inventory of 184 buildings on the Central Washington University (CWU) campus, from which I evaluated buildings to determine their eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Historical research allowed me to identify the age of each building, as well as stylistic trends and historic events between the late nineteenth and early twenty-first centuries that influenced CWU architecture. Through archival research, I determined whether each historic building represented the work of a master architect, a distinct type, period, or method of construction/architecture, or was associated with …

This study examines the motivating forces behind downtown urban renewal projects through qualitative interview research. Using Spokane, Washington, as a case study, interviews were conducted with key players in downtown revitalization, including public administrators, private developers, and non-profit representatives. While neoliberal theory indicates that economic return serves as the primary motivation for investment, interview questions were designed to uncover whether additional motivating factors stimulate renewal work. Results indicate that those conducting renewal projects are primarily motivated by economics, but additionally cite heritage preservation values and community development as significant factors. Moreover, contemporary renewal projects are found to be small-scale endeavors, …
