McGaughey with Otis Lee Wiggins about the resettlement program undertaken by the Resettlement Administration Project 14 in Christian County, Kentucky. Wiggins was an administrator for the U.S. Resettlement Administration and discusses the Christian County program in great detail.

Zoning As Taxidermy: Neighborhood Conservation Districts And The Regulation Of Aesthetics, Anika S. Lemar

Over the last thirty years, municipalities across the country have embraced neighborhood conservation districts, regulations that impose design standards at the neighborhood level. Despite their adoption in thirty-five states, in municipalities from Boise to Cambridge, neighborhood conservation districts have evaded critical analysis by legal scholars. By regulating features such as architectural style, roof angle, and maximum eave overhang, conservation districts purport to protect “neighborhood character” or “cultural stability.” Implicit in these regulations is the unsupported assumption that the essential feature of a neighborhood’s character is its architectural design at a single point in time. The natural beauty of the Garden Peninsula and proximity on the Great Lakes has attracted people to its shores for thousands of years. The peninsula holds many intrinsic qualities: cultural, historic, natural and recreational. The Anishinabeg native peoples historically occupied the peninsula during warm fishing months and established seasonal camps here. The French Missionaries followed in the seventeenth century traveling along the sound between islands in Green Bay and following the Niagara Escarpment northward to the Garden Peninsula. Many biblical passages remind us of this, such as the one (Gen 18, 4-5) in which Abraham welcomes three guests, washes their feet and offers them a piece of bread and a place to rest under a tree. In the winter 2015 term, Eastern Michigan University’s Historic Preservation Program partnered with the Leelanau Historical Society to initiate the development of a Conditions Assessment for the historic former Leelanau County Jail, located on land where the county seat had stood prior to its move to Suttons Bay Township in 2008. The purpose of this joint effort was to continue the efforts already begun by the Historical Society to save the jail. Since interest in development of the property the jail currently resides on persists, it has become imperative to create an assessment so that if the jail needs to …

Preserving Pullman: Historic District Becomes Illinois' First National Monument

Pullman has long had a place in history, labor and urban planning, but the spotlight on this far South Side neighborhood is about to get a whole lot brighter. On Feb. 19, President Barack Obama announced the designation of the Pullman Historic District as a national monument. With this move, Pullman entered the National Park Service portfolio, joining such iconic American sites as the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, and becoming the first national monument in Illinois. Pullman's history, architectural significance, and residents are spotlighted.

In 2015 the City of Eureka was planning a trail that would end/begin near the house located at 2186 Tydd Street, which was initially not considered to be within the Area of Potential Effect (APE).

The house was researched and evaluated for historic significance. The findings of this investigation are reported in this paper, along with a description of the property and a short history.
