The preservation field has few software programs specifically created to store historic and management documentation. Some programs and techniques are utilized in combination to aid in the management and documentation process of historic resources that include, laser scanning, AutoDesk AutoCAD programs, Rhino 3D, photogrammetry, geographic information system, and even Microsoft Excel. This thesis examines the applicability of the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry's Building Information Modeling (BIM) to create a three dimensional user interface for tracking and storing historic and management documentation. Molana Abbey, a ruin located in Ballynatray Demesne, County Waterford, Ireland, has religious roots in the sixth century but much of the structure dates to the eleventh-century. Molana became an important center of religion and education in southern Ireland. After Henry VIII dissolved Irish monasteries in 1546, the former abbey became a part of the land holdings of Sir Walter Raleigh. The abbey was then converted from a religious to a residential structure occupied briefly by English polymath Thomas Harriot. The structure fell into disrepair until the nineteenth-century when Grice Smyth, a new owner, transformed the ruin into a garden …

Outdoor advertisements have enlivened America's commercial landscape since the seventeenth century. Hand-painted advertisements applied to the sides of buildings, from barns in rural settings to stores in the nation's towns and cities, were once ubiquitous but have, as both message and medium have evolved, generally fallen out of everyday use. Once common, hand-painted wall signs have faded from America's commercial landscape and have become objects of nostalgia more than a method of merchandising.

Secondary narratives are most easily defined as narratives deemed non-essential to the primary interpretation goals of a historic site. Given the established significance criteria in the United States, secondary narratives are currently undervalued and are challenging to address. The intent of this investigation is to frame an identity for the church of Santa Maria Antiqua and the urban condition of Rome during the sixth through eighth centuries. Coupling topographical and semiotic information with larger geographic issues, this study interrogates the church and specific individuals associated with it as a way of more comprehensively understanding Santa Maria Antiqua as a visual medium of cultural change and political propaganda. Narrating the complex formation of personal and social identity at the site allows us to understand greater physical and social contexts and explore more thoroughly early Christian Rome.

The idea of adapting old buildings for emerging purposes has been a regular strategy to sustain architectural resources since the medieval period or even earlier. However, the concept of adaptive reuse has only been gaining prevalence since the nineteenth-century when there was an increase in awareness of historic preservation. At this point, instead of sustaining architectural resources in both financial and functional terms, adaptive reuse was re-introduced and reapplied as one of the philosophical treatments of historic preservation.

The first phase of the City of Fortuna’s Rohner Creek flood control project will involve channel modification, widening, and bank stabilization to reduce flooding of bordering properties. Two buildings at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Headquarters (118 Fortuna Blvd.) are slated for demolition and will not be replaced. To comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, Section 15064.5, (CEQA), the CAL FIRE buildings were researched and assessed for historic significance.

We spent time researching the history of the Progressive Club so that we had a bet- ter understanding of the structure we would be studying and documenting. Our first day on site, the class divided into small teams, each focusing at a different section of the building and working on measured drawings. Linden Place is a Federal-style residence located in Bristol, Rhode Island on 1.8 acres of land, including three outbuildings. The mansion was constructed in 1810 by Russell Warren and is significant under Criteria B and C in the areas of two of its residents and its architecture. Original owner, George DeWolf and his family had strong ties to the triangle trade and was one of the largest importer of slaves in the country during the nineteenth century. Samuel Colt, grandson of DeWolf, was a respected business man who played an important role in the rubber industry in Bristol and eventually …

The battlefield of the Nankou Campaign was the earliest battlefield of China’s Second World War, which covered an extensive area of about 700 km2 on the north west of Beiping at the border between Hebei and Chahar Provinces. The Nankou Campaign is recalled recently after being obscured for decades. Unfortunately, without a preservation system like the National Park Service, the sites in the battlefield, such as the Great Wall, have been left in ruins for over 70 years. This capstone is a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the Colt estate stable in Bristol, RI by analyzing two possible adaptive reuse scenarios. The two scenarios the report focuses on is a special event venue and a horse stable and training facility. The goal of the report is to examine which scenario would be a feasible option for the existing structure while maintaining its historical integrity.
