Optimization Of Thermal Energy Storage Sizing Using Thermodynamic Analysis, Andrew Villanueva 2020 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Optimization Of Thermal Energy Storage Sizing Using Thermodynamic Analysis, Andrew Villanueva

Masters Theses

The aim of this thesis is to examine the effect that Thermal Energy Storage (TES) sizing has on a building’s ability to meet heating and cooling demands in an energy and cost efficient manner. The focus of the research is the quantification the effects of TES for system sizing and boiler cycling. Research is accomplished by modelling TES systems with various storage capacities using thermodynamic analysis. Energy costs are subject to increase during peak usage periods due to a limited supply of energy. Peak heating and cooling periods also force thermal systems to be sized for loads that are only …

Following on from a forward-looking BIM Roadmap for Ireland in 2017 and the publication by the authors of a detailed BIM in Ireland study in 2017 and 2019, what is the actual state of readiness for a more general BIM mandate in Ireland? This paper will review recent publications, seminars and industry initiatives on this topic of interest supported by an online survey to assess the current state of readiness …

Can Public Construction And Demolition Data Describe Trends In Building Material Recycling? Observations From Philadelphia, Kimberlee Marcellus-Zamora, Patricia Gallagher, Sabrina Spatari 2020 Thomas Jefferson University

Can Public Construction And Demolition Data Describe Trends In Building Material Recycling? Observations From Philadelphia, Kimberlee Marcellus-Zamora, Patricia Gallagher, Sabrina Spatari

College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers

There is a significant amount of waste generated during construction and demolition (C&D) activities, but few data to understand the sources, age, spatial origin, and its fate following entry into the waste management system. With few public records that track C&D waste flows, we turned to industry and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to quantify C&D data and meta-data using material flow analysis (MFA). LEED databases are not normally used to build life cycle inventories or material flow accounts because they do not house sufficiently detailed data. We propose using the geo-referenced data on reused C&D waste in …

Multimodal Transit And A New Civic Architecture, Samuel Bruce Hill 2020 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Multimodal Transit And A New Civic Architecture, Samuel Bruce Hill

Masters Theses

We live in an age defined by the automobile and its infrastructure. This paradigm of movement has shaped how we live our lives, and the urban frameworks we inhabit. Cars as a form of transportation damage the environment and engender unsustainable lifestyles. They also create anti-social spaces with the infrastructure they require, and therefore their success is inverse to that of the pedestrian experience.

I seek to adapt this transit paradigm with a more flexible and resilient multimodal system. My work focuses on reinvigorating a rail line in central Massachusetts and designing a modular station system that can serve as …

The Advantages Of Integrated Project Delivery (Ipd) Utilization In The Construction Industry Compared To Traditional Project Delivery Methods, Mert Oytun

English Language Institute

Today, primarily due to the development of information technologies, the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has the opportunity to realize its shortcomings more effortlessly. Typically, the most considerable difficulties are encountered in the performance measurements of projects in the AEC industry. The reason is that the AEC industry is highly fragmented, even though it involves various stakeholders that should be in uninterrupted communication throughout all phases of a project. This fragmented structure mainly causes (1)endless debates among the stakeholders, (2) schedule delays, and (3) profit losses. Hence, addressing projects’ productivity change regarding the utilization of different project delivery methods …

An Iot Framework For Modeling And Controlling Thermal Comfort In Buildings, Fadi Alsaleem, Mehari K. Tesfay, Mostafa Rafaie, Kevin Sinkar, Dhaman Besarla, Parthiban Arunasalam

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Humans spend more than 90% of their day in buildings, where their health and productivity are demonstrably linked to thermal comfort. Building thermal comfort systems account for the largest share of U.S energy consumption. Despite this high-energy cost, due to building design complexity and the variety of building occupant needs, addressing thermal comfort in buildings remains a difficult problem. To overcome this challenge, this paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT) approach to efficiently model and control comfort in buildings. In the model phase, a method to access and exploit wearable device data to build a personal thermal comfort model …

Residential Seismic Retrofit Cost For Home Located In Tustin, California, Sara Clark

Construction Management

Seismically retrofitting a residential home not only protects the homeowner, but also helps them prepare for the future. Needless to say, many older homes are not up to the 2018 International Residential Code. As a result, many owners are uninformed about how much it will cost to retrofit their home and what changes will have to be made. The solution for this is determining a cost per square foot ratio that will help homeowners calculate an estimate for the retrofit of their home. Additionally, it is important to break this cost down into what specific changes need to be made. …
