Hb 1844- Free Breakfast And Lunch Programs In Tennessee, Cora Sm Williams, Bailee M. Walker, Lynn D. Fawcett
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In 2022, more than 13 million children went to school hungry in the United States. According to the USDA, 1 in 5 children do not know where their next meal is coming from (Child Hunger in America, n.d.). In Tennessee, this number is 1 in 4 (Hance, 2020). Far too many students come from households where they may not have access to regular, nutritious meals. Hunger can significantly impact a child's ability to learn and thrive in school. By providing free breakfast and lunch, schools can ensure that students have access to essential nutrition, which can improve their academic performance …

Child Care Advocacy: Tennessee House Bill 1669, Madelyn Kearns, Julio Rodriguez, Destiny Welch, Dillan Williams
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
House Bill 1669 aims to require day child facilities to alert parents or guardians of
enrolled children sixty days prior to the permanent closure of the facility. The main purpose of this bill is to protect hard working parents in Tennessee from being
blindsided by their childcare service by giving them the right to know 60 days in advance before permanent closure of the childcare agency their child or children are currently enrolled in or are currently on the waitlist for (Tennessee General assembly, 2024). This is an important issue because
72 percent of working parents said they cannot afford …

BSCD Research Briefs
Social enterprise is widely recognized as an innovative and impactful approach to tackling challenging social issues and enhancing community well-being. As highlighted by Samuelsson & Witell (2022), one of the key attributes of social entrepreneurship is its creation of new social values. Understanding social entrepreneurs’ motivations can help inspire more people to create positive contributions to our community. However, there is a lack of research on this topic within Ontario, Canada.
Our study interviewed 10 social entrepreneurs in Ontario to understand the “Factors Motivating Social Entrepreneurs to Learn About Change-making, Social Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.” The objective is encouraging more individuals …

"The Most Important Thing In Ipv Right Now": The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Brain Injury, Halina (Lin) Haag
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and brain injury (BI) has been almost entirely overlooked in research, practice, and policy, despite the known risks associated with the two conditions. Individually, IPV and BI are associated with elevated rates of unemployment, poverty, and homelessness, as well as increased mental health challenges. These social determinants of health, employment status, and income impact women’s wellbeing through access to safe accommodations, food security, and (dis)ability supports. These determinants are also related to an increased likelihood of experiencing addictions, mental health challenges, and physical danger, potentially leaving women vulnerable to ongoing violence. This qualitative …

Expanded Transference: A Humanities Perspective On The Generative Core Of Ernest Becker's Theory Of Human Nature, Daniel Liechty, Jerry Piven
Faculty Publications - Social Work
The death anxiety thesis is widely considered to be Ernest Becker’s primary contribution to social theory and is associated with his most widely read book, The Denial of Death (1973). This essay suggests Becker is understood in a more sophisticated and nuanced way when his death anxiety thesis is situated in the context of his earlier work in the humanities and social sciences. The death anxiety thesis itself is one component of a much broader theoretical conceptualization of expanded transference, a constant thread through all of Becker’s writings from his doctoral dissertation through his final posthumously published works. Furthermore, the …

Ethically Managing Theories Of Agency In Counseling And Psychotherapy, Jeffrey S. Reber, Jacob D. Tubbs, Jacob A. Larson
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Informed by personal and professional cultures, clients and therapists inevitably hold various assumptions and attributions about the possibility of free will. Given that these “theories of agency” may not always align, and in light of the ethics codes for psychotherapists and counselors, it is imperative, as a matter of cultural competence and responsivity, that therapists seek training in understanding different cultures of agency. To that end, and to help therapists navigate cultural differences and mitigate the risk of personal and professional values imposition, this article provides a conceptual framework for organizing the common formal and informal theories of agency that …

Adolescent dating violence is a national public health issue and research suggests that aggressive parenting may predict the likelihood that a child will subsequently experience abuse. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of parent physical and psychological aggression on adolescent dating violence perpetration and victimization. Data derived from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study resulted in a racially and ethnically diverse sample of adolescents in dating relationships at the age of 15 years (N = 952). Utilizing both parent and adolescent data which assessed parenting practices at ages 3, 5, 9, and 15, …

Social Media And User-Centric Approach: A Comprehensive Exploration, Suresh Madhavrao Manekar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The communication industry has skilled a significant model shift in recent times because of the ubiquitous impact of social media (Smith, 2021). In addition to reforming interpersonal communication, these platforms have emerged as vital channels for the dissemination of information and the development of societies (Jones et al., 2020). This chapter explores the transition towards a user-centric approach and the development of social media stages over time. This investigation is built upon the user-centric approach, which prioritises the customization of digital experiences according to individual preferences. It is crucial to grasp the multi-layered effects of social media on group domains, …

Significant conceptual and empirical evidence has been found through qualitative research about the benefits, limitations, and uses of individual interviews. However, there is scant research illustrating how researchers use specific techniques that center participants’ intersecting identities to build rapport, trust, and authentic connections during individual interviews, and especially during interviews with Black women. We illustrate how we used eight empirically grounded techniques in our qualitative individual interviews with Black women. Through our analysis of the interviews, the concept of safety emerged. “This person is safe” reflects the combined stories the women reported regarding their experiences engaging in individual interviews. In …

Intimate Partner Violence And Spirituality: A Healing Process, Sheila Diane Lundquist
Intimate Partner Violence And Spirituality: A Healing Process, Sheila Diane Lundquist
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to understand how intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors, from the Atlanta area, use spirituality to heal from the abuse. The theory guiding this study is Maslow’s (1954) Hierarchy of Needs as it shows how spirituality helped these women meet the needs on the hierarchy after having many of the needs ripped from them by the perpetrator(s). Intimate partner violence is a fundamental problem in the United States, especially during these times of COVID-19 and the stay-at home orders. Intimate partner violence takes a toll on the family unit, the community, and the …

Covid, Church, & Cuts: A Single Narrative Case Study Of Pandemic Impacts On A Bi-Vocational Pastor & Barber, A. D. Hooker, Camille S. Talbert
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
This narrative case study provides an in-depth look into the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic from the perspective of an assistant pastor with a small African American church in an urban city. His story indicates that the pandemic had both positive and negative effects on the pastor’s ability to carry out his role of pastoral care and ministry. Some positives were the results of new technological adaptations that helped to improve members’ consistency in attending and participating in weekly services. Some negative effects imposed by COVID-19 was the revelation of imbalanced relationships and a lack of trust in God. The …

Music Therapy Theses
My existence and presence as a Black woman and graduate scholar in music therapy have allowed me to share my experience of racial trauma and oppression in the hallways of GCSU’s music therapy program. Autoethnography is the method I use to write my thesis on the relationships between Blackness, pedagogy, and music therapy. Thus, I perform an evocative autoethnographic study that allows me to share my personal experience of racial trauma and oppression within the culture of music therapy and to critique the larger social structures of whiteness that disenfranchise and dominate me and other Black student music therapists (SMTs). …
