Market Principles, Philanthropic Ideals And Public Service Values: The Public Policy Program At The Central European University, Diane L. Stone

Just as there was a boom in the establishment of Master’s of Business Administration over the past 30 or more years, today there is an equivalent boom in graduate programs in the field of public policy. This is so for the transition states of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (fSU) where the dynamics of globalization and ‘Europeanization’ are apparent and the pressures for reform pronounced. The educational prerequisites for managing reform and meeting the challenges of globalization has represented a problematic for both official actors such as national education ministries, international organizations and bilateral development …

Achieving Family Health Literacy: The Case For Insuring Children, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Barbara Debuono
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
One aspect of the SCHIP reauthorization debate that has received more limited attention than it deserves is the relationship between children's health insurance coverage and family health literacy. That is, to what extent is children's health insurance associated with higher health literacy, and to what extent is reduced parental health literacy linked to lower rates of health insurance among children? This association is extremely important, since there is strong evidence of a link between health literacy and the appropriate use of health care. Evidence suggests that when previously uninsured children are covered by health insurance, parents at all income levels …

A Study To Develop Strategies For Proactive Water-Loss Management, Hyun Jung Park
Public Management and Policy Dissertations
Water conservation is one of the important policy concerns. However, most water conservation practices have focused primarily on reducing use by customers. Since a large amount of water lost in supply systems causes water providers to lose money, resources, and reliability, and the current passive approach cannot deal with water losses effectively, a proactive approach is necessary for water-loss management. The goal of this study is to help policymakers and water utilities develop strategies that proactively solve water losses. To develop strategies for water-loss management, it is essential to identify key factors that determine the level of water losses as …

The challenges of being a female academician are revealed in statistical data about faculty rank, tenure, and salaries as well as in descriptive accounts of the environment that women encounter in the higher education institutions. However, the intersection of women and the academic disciplines rooted in the liberal arts tradition is a neglected arena of investigation. This research involved a series of qualitative in-depth interviews with three women representing biology, psychology, and English at a small public college …
