Fall E-Reference Update, 2010 Part 2: E-Books, Sue Polanka

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Four years ago, RBB featured its first article comparing electronic reference aggregator and publisher interfaces, and a second article followed in the November 1, 2007, issue. Three years later, we are taking another detailed look at the e-book interfaces and offerings from reference publishers. Much has changed in three years, particularly with the interface features and access to content. Audio, video, flash_audio animations, Web 2.0 tools like bookmarking and note taking, access to content through the open web, and mobile devices and applications have all appeared, and continue to grow. transportation research. The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) annually invests approximately $180 million in State Planning and Research (SPR) and University Transportation Centers (UTC). This investment generates an extensive portfolio of “grey literature” that is not yet uniformly cataloged or accessible, despite the best efforts of the National Technical Information Service, the Transportation Research Board, and the National Transportation Library. This paper reports on a review of publishing and archiving practices for transportation research technical reports, summarizes best practices, and recommends that UTC and SPR research programs seek and strengthen partnerships with libraries to facilitate improved production, stewardship and …

Need Exceeds Space: A Serials Withdrawal Project At The University Of Rhode Island University Libraries, Brian T. Gallagher, Andrée J. Rathemacher

Public Services Faculty Publications

In 2009, the University of Rhode Island’s main library, the Robert L. Carothers Library and Learning Commons in Kingston, initiated a pilot serials withdrawal project when the need for space for new services exceeded the space available in the library. A joint venture between Acquisitions and Access Services, the successful pilot led to a subsequent withdrawal project in summer 2010 to free additional space in the library. The print journals targeted for withdrawal were ones to which the library had online access through licensed journal archives. Considerations on what to withdraw, the process of identifying titles for withdrawal, and the …

Connecting Staff Skills To Performance Reviews, Dennis J. Smith

Dennis J Smith

The University of South Florida (USF) Library initiated a task force to develop a listing of skills needed by staff personnel within the library. This task force was able to draw from several sources to recognize some core competencies needed within the library. This effort highlighted the need for the library to develop a correlation between these competencies and how staff members will be evaluated. The Performance Indicators document was developed to facilitate this.
