Book donations are a mainstay of collection building. Gifts can range in scope from a few items dropped off by a patron to a large donation that requires a team of people to retrieve. The items themselves may also vary from the kind you want to send out a press release praising to the kind you want to quietly put in the book sale pile. Receiving donations can be considered either an exceptional tool for developing the collection or a time-consuming reallocation of library resources that could be spent ordering and processing new materials. In January of 2011, Booth Library was the recipient of a Technology Improvement Award for the purchase of a new Web server. With a new enterprise-class server, it was possible to have several virtual machines running on one physical server. Using virtualization, we are able to run Microsoft Server 2008 and Ubuntu Linux as separate virtual machines on the same computer. The Linux environment is host to several open-source projects, such as call number mapping and Facebook applications. I began working at Booth Library in February 2011 as liaison librarian for the Biological Sciences and Chemistry departments. Prior to my arrival, faculty of these departments had not been interacting actively with the library, and students from these departments had not been receiving library instruction geared toward their field of study. Considering discussions I had in library school and following suggestions from my fellow librarians, I created an action plan to introduce myself to these departments.

Historical fiction is currently undergoing a renaissance in popularity among readers. However, many questions surround this wide-ranging yet complex genre. How do readers and librarians define historical fiction? Who reads it, why do people choose it, and what do readers expect when they read a historical novel? How can it be found within library collections, given that it's such a broad category? Answers to these questions are discussed, along with an overview of the diverse subgenres of historical fiction. Numerous examples of benchmark titles and authors are provided for each subgenre. Appeal factors for historical fiction, hot topics and themes, …

Since implementing MetaLib in 2005, UW-Madison Libraries have focused on continual improvements in resource discovery. The most recent project for improving user access was the acquisition of Xerxes software, an open-source interface for MetaLib. This presentation describes the decision for acquiring Xerxes and the process of implementation at the UW-Madison campus, including UW-Madison additions to Xerxes such as a "value added" area which highlights resources/librarians and programming code that improves the Xerxes "By Title" search.
