As teachers of critical thinking and sound reasoning, academic librarians play a vital role in supporting sustainability across the curriculum. Seasoned consolidators and distributors of information, librarians also bring a unique voice to sustainability councils and committees. The forging of partnerships between the Library and the Office of Sustainability holds great potential for strengthening the surge of sustainability in higher education. This presentation centers on survey and interview responses from librarians who are instrumental in shaping sustainability on their campuses. Rebecca C. Reznik-Zellen

Environmental scanning exercises enable an institution to develop a clear understanding of complex issues before making high-impact process decisions or commitments. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the path to embracing the current data management trend includes several complementary, exploratory exercises designed to help the Libraries not only understand the nuances of the local research environment but also to evaluate practices at peer institutions that may serve as a model for engaging and supporting faculty. By crafting a vision that prioritizes the needs of the campus community while learning from external solutions, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries are able …

Umass Amherst Friends Of The Library Newsletter - Spring/Summer 2011 (No. 41), Jay Schafer

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries

Message from Jay:

At social events when people learn I am the Director of Libraries at UMass Amherst, the most frequently asked question is “Why do we need a library since everything is now digitized?” It is impossible to deny that networked computing has changed libraries, academia, and our society over the past twenty years. Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Twitter are just a few examples. The importance of social networking in the recent political unrest in Egypt and other middle eastern countries is further evidence ofthe global impact networked computing is having. These changes make libraries more important than ever; …

The Benefits Of Managing And Publishing Etds "In House" Using An Open Access Repository, Meghan Banach

Meghan Banach Bergin

Open access repositories have given universities an exciting new opportunity to manage and publish their own ETDs. At the same time, new challenges have emerged such as objections to open access and new more complicated workflows. Meghan Banach, Metadata Catalog Librarian at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has coordinated the library side of ETD management for the past 4 years. She oversees the management of about 500 theses and dissertations per year. She will use the UMass ETD program as a case study to describe two workflows for managing ETDS: one for doctoral dissertations which involves both the UMI Proquest …

Institutional Repositories And Digital Preservation: Assessing Current Practices At Research Libraries, Meghan Banach, Yuan Li

Meghan Banach Bergin

In spring 2010, authors from the University of Massachusetts Amherst conducted a national survey on digital preservation of Institutional Repository (IR) materials among Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions. Examining the current practices of digital preservation of IR materials, the survey of 72 research libraries reveals the challenges and opportunities of implementing digital preservation for IRs in a complex environment with rapidly evolving technology, practices, and standards. Findings from this survey will inform libraries about the current state of digital preservation for IRs.

Umass Amherst Friends Of The Library Newsletter - Fall/Winter 2011 (No. 42), Jay Schafer

Library News for the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries

Message from Jay:

“The Digital Revolution [is] ripping through our lives like the meteor that extinguished the dinosaurs” – so writes Louis Rossetto, founding editor of Wired (June 2008). He goes on to say,“Practically every institution that our society is based on, from the local to the supranational, is being rendered obsolete. That is the world you [his children] are inheriting. ”I often think of this quote when people ask me “What is the future of libraries?” And, I think of another quote attributed to Charles Darwin, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most …
