To "Keep The Past In Lively Memory": William Carl Bolivar's Efforts To Preserve African American Cultural Heritage, William Welburn

William C Welburn

The contributions of William Carl Bolivar, a Philadelphia African American bibliophile and journalist, are considered. Bolivar’s interest in historical documentation shaped his sense of interconnectedness with the collective memory of Philadelphia’s black community. His collecting interests are manifested in his column published in the Philadelphia Tribune, in his contributions to the American Negro Historical Society and other social and cultural organizations in Philadelphia, and in a published catalog of portions of his collection. Bolivar’s network of collectors and associates formed a “nucleus for a larger effort” to preserve African American cultural heritage. Their collecting efforts formed the foundation for black …

Is Our Cd/Dvd Collection Worth All This? A Cost-Per Use Study Of Accompanying Materials, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

Librarians have spent a considerable amount of time discussing cataloging and processing procedures for texts that have accompanying material.  The procedures are usually well-documented but elaborate; are our efforts worth it?  This research uses a time study to produce a time and materials cost per use for the CDs and DVDs in the collection of the Norris Medical Library.  Analysis shows that the time and materials costs per use of the CDs and DVDs at this library are relatively low, and that little change in the procedures used at this library are needed.

Dewey Deracialized: A Critical Race-Theoretic Perspective, Jonathan Furner Dec 2006

Dewey Deracialized: A Critical Race-Theoretic Perspective, Jonathan Furner

Jonathan Furner

Critical race theory is introduced as a potentially useful approach to the evaluation of bibliographic classification schemes. An overview is presented of the essential elements of critical race theory, including clarifications of the meanings of some important terms such as “race” and “social justice.” On the basis of a review of existing conceptions of the just and the antiracist library service, a rationale is presented for hypothesizing that critical race theory may be of use to the library and information sciences. The role of classification schemes as information institutions in their own right is established, and the Dewey Decimal Classification …

The Why Of The Beholder: An Analysis Of The Use Of Art Image Databases By Art Historians, Rose Fortier

Rose Fortier

In the field of art history, there is a great potential for the use of art image databases. However, there is little literature that deals specifically with the needs and desires of art historians when it comes to art image databases. This thesis fills the gap in the literature with a user study of the use of art image databases by art historians. It includes a survey of what databases are used, why they are used, and to what extent they are used by art history professors. Results indicate that many issues in the usability and design of currently available …

Melissa had prepared several tables with representative literature dealing with topics such as divorce, adoption, sexuality, religion, and death, and students were reading and discussing the books. Suddenly Dorothy noticed a student clutching one of the books to her chest and smiling. Dorothy walked over to her and the student said, "I love this book. Intellectual Property In Library Schools: A Proposal, J. Broido, J. Camp, Lisa (Duque) Zilinski, T. Smith, R. Valentin

Lisa Zilinski

Intellectual property (IP) topics such as copyright, licensure, and fair use have become critical to today's information professional. This study proposes to explore and analyze the current state of IP education within Library and Information Science graduate programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Despite the importance of IP issues to information professionals, we propose that ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS programs do not require courses focusing on IP issues. IP issues include, but are not limited to, questions of copyright, interlibrary loan procedures, and electronic database licenses. This study will help identify the extent to which IP training in U.S. ALA-accredited …
