Teaching Information Evaluation And Critical Thinking Skills In Physics Classes, Adriana Popescu, James Morgan
Library Scholarship
The physics curriculum at all educational levels can be enriched to include tools for strengthening students' information evaluation skills. The Report of the Joint APS-AAPT Task Force on Graduate Education in Physics calls for such training to be part of graduate programs, but training to acquire these lifetime skills can be incorporated in the curriculum even before graduate level.

Bridging The Gap: Connecting The Scientific Literature With Learning And Teaching, Katherine O'Clair
Library Scholarship
One of the challenges of integrating research activities into the biology curriculum is conveying to students the importance of using the scientific literature to situate their question into the larger framework of scientific knowledge. Consulting the literature and synthesizing information from it is a critical component of the research process, yet it remains difficult to get students to do this using appropriate sources. The sources they do use and cite often fall short of our expectations. How do we bridge this gap and connect students with the best source - the scientific literature? In this workshop we will explore ways …

Libraries 101 For International Students, Adriana Popescu
Libraries 101 For International Students, Adriana Popescu
Library Scholarship
Academic libraries have been increasingly active in developing programs and services which allow their educational mission to address the needs of an increasingly more diverse student population. In addition to the pressures of adjusting to a new environment and to the educational demands of a new school, international students must also adjust to an extensive and sometimes overwhelming library system, which can be quite different from what they are used to. The organizational structure of libraries, their services, collections, even their role and mission can differ from a country to another, thus turning libraries into intimidating places, which can keep …
