Creating Online Tutorials: Five Lessons Learned, Lauren M. Collins
Creating Online Tutorials: Five Lessons Learned, Lauren M. Collins
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In the fall of 2005, two librarians, a legal research and writing program director, and an instructional technologist at Wayne State University received a grant to create online tutorials introducing novices to the basics of legal research. Tutorials were planned on subjects that the library and the legal research and writing program had traditionally covered jointly via library workshops, coordinated with classroom instruction for first-year law students. Since the mission of the law library is to support campus-wide activity and to assist members of the general public with legal research needs, the content of the tutorials was designed to serve …

Big Opportunities In Access To “Small Science” Data, Harlan Onsrud, James Campbell

A distributed infrastructure that would enable those who wish to do so to contribute their scientific or technical data to a universal digital commons could allow such data to be more readily preserved and accessible among disciplinary domains. Five critical issues that must be addressed in developing an efficient and effective data commons infrastructure are described. We conclude that creation of a distributed infrastructure meeting the critical criteria and deployable throughout the networked university library community is practically achievable.

Fixing Fair Use, Michael W. Carroll
Fixing Fair Use, Michael W. Carroll
Articles in Law Reviews & Other Academic Journals
The fair use doctrine in copyright law balances expressive freedoms by permitting one to use another's copyrighted expression under certain circumstances. The doctrine's extreme context-sensitivity renders it of little value to those who require reasonable ex ante certainty about the legality of a proposed use. In this Article, Professor Carroll advances a legislative proposal to create a Fair Use Board in the U.S. Copyright Office that would have power to declare a proposed use of another's copyrighted work to be a fair use. Like a private letter ruling from the IRS or a “no action” letter from the SEC, a …

Librarian Publications & Presentations
Multi-disciplinary and comparative approach to legal studies implies that research should go outside the conventional research sources and consult a variety of options. Open access to legal information is made possible by legal information institutes worldwide. In the early 1990s, the Australian Legal Information Institute (AustiLII) initiated this unique medium of disseminating free legal information.

Use Of The Elizabeth Moys Classification Scheme For Legal Materials In The Caribbean, Janice A. Modeste, Yemisi Dina
Librarian Publications & Presentations
This chapter will give an historical background and account of the use of the Elizabeth Moys Classification Scheme in law libraries in the Caribbean. A questionnaire was administered to librarians and library staff of law libraries. Twenty-four questionnaire responses were received from participants. One of the results of the study is the suggestion that a separate number should be assigned for the entire Caribbean in the Moys Classification scheme because of the problems being encountered by librarians in assigning numbers.

The People’s Republic of China is currently the seventh largest economy in the world and is projected to be the largest economy by 2050. Commensurate with its growing economic power, the PRC is using its political power more frequently on the world stage. As a result of these changes, interest in China and its legal system is growing among attorneys and academics. International law librarians similarly are seeing more researchers interested in China, its laws and economy. The principal language of China, Mandarin Chinese, is considered a difficult language to learn. The Foreign Service Institute has rated Mandarin as “exceptionally …
Google's Law, Greg Lastowka
Google's Law, Greg Lastowka
Greg Lastowka
Google has become, for the majority of Americans, the index of choice for online information. Through dynamically generated results pages keyed to a near-infinite variety of search terms, Google steers our thoughts and our learning online. It tells us what words mean, what things look like, where to buy things, and who and what is most important to us. Google’s control over “results” constitutes an awesome ability to set the course of human knowledge. As this paper will explain, fortunes are won and lost based on Google’s results pages, including the fortunes of Google itself. Because Google’s results are so …
Redefining Academic Law Library Excellence In A Technological Age: From Evolution To Revolution, Steven D. Hinckley
Redefining Academic Law Library Excellence In A Technological Age: From Evolution To Revolution, Steven D. Hinckley
Journal Articles
This article focuses on the rapidly changing standards of academic law library excellence as the ready availability and diversity of information technologies and digital collections supplant traditional print collections as the determinative measurement of library quality. The author challenges the legal and law library professions to discard traditional qualitative standards (e.g., print volume and title holdings) and to embrace standards that recognize the importance of meaningful access to information that is not tied to physical ownership or location.

There are synchronistic moments when in the process of writing. While contemplating this article, an email message made its way to my desk, past Pierce Law Center's spam firewall with the following subject line: "Pepsi v. Coke-Tell Us--Get $10." Do IP researchers choose Lexis or Westlaw justified by taste? Surely you jest, some voice said to me. Repressing this message, I proceeded to compare platform content, perform literature searches, and poll students and IP professors.
Yet another synchronistic moment came as the email from those taking the poll steamed into my email. Many IP professors indicated that they made the …

Law And Heidegger’S Question Concerning Technology: Prolegomenon To Future Law Librarianship, Paul D. Callister
Law And Heidegger’S Question Concerning Technology: Prolegomenon To Future Law Librarianship, Paul D. Callister
Faculty Works
Following World War II, the German philosopher Martin Heidegger offered one of the most potent criticisms of technology and modern life. His nightmare is a world whose essence has been reduced to the functional equivalent of a giant gasoline station, an energy source for modern technology and industry. "This relation of man to the world [is] in principle a technical one . . . [It is] altogether alien to former ages and histories. For Heidegger, the problem is not technology itself, but the technical mode of thinking that has accompanied it." Such a viewpoint of the world is a useful …

Scholarly Articles
The authors discuss the changing library needs of law students as computers, technology, and legal publishing evolve. In order to track the evolving needs of students, the authors discuss ways that librarians can survey students and explain how focus groups and usability tests can provide further insights regarding students’ research skills and information needs. The article examines the literature regarding information literacy and suggests minimum standards for legal information literacy upon graduation, and the authors suggest new services that law librarians could create for law students. Next the authors examine the recent literature about Library 2.0 services, and offer suggestions …

Based on papers presented at a 2005 workshop for individuals interested in becoming academic law library directors, this article begins by exploring the duties of academic director jobs—administrative skills and faculty responsibilities—before examining how to build credentials in preparation for such jobs. It concludes by focusing on the skills and knowledge needed to interview for director jobs.
