Scholarly Papers and Articles
Change is the only constant in digital collections work. Evolving technologies, resources, and needs require a constant flexibility in not only what work is done, but how and by whom. Over the course of the 2017-2018 academic year, Grand Valley State University Libraries held a series of facilitated conversations to analyze the workflows, organizational structure, and overall support for the management of digital collections and repositories. This article summarizes the facilitation process and highlights areas of opportunity, aspirations, and future directions.

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
We believe that Elsevier and other major publishers are continuing to engage in anti-competitive practices, which are continuously worsening, and that information gained in the last 15 years urges immediate investigation and intervention into this unregulated market space. This could be, for example, through an empirical analysis of the scholarly publishing market; by having an independent regulatory body monitoring and overseeing the digital services provided by Elsevier and others within the industry; banning the use of non-disclosure clauses in licensing contracts; requiring transparency into the production costs of research articles and publishing operations; banning the use of inappropriate journal-level metrics …

Opting Out Is Not An Option: Why All Academic Librarians Must Understand Open Access, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
This presentation challenges the still-too-prevalent notion that scholarly communication competencies are essential only for scholarly communication librarians and optional for other academic librarians. It focuses on one competency in particular: a robust understanding of open access.

Visualizing Scholarly Communication, Nina Collins, Matthew Hannah
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Researchers at Purdue are collaborating on just such a project by applying digital tools to the analysis of predatory publishing. In …
Responsible Use Of Materials For Oer: A Hands-On Workshop For Faculty, Madeline Cohen
Responsible Use Of Materials For Oer: A Hands-On Workshop For Faculty, Madeline Cohen
Publications and Research
This lightening talk will give an overview of an active-learning workshop at Lehman College for faculty developing OER. The goals of the 90 minute workshop are to provide practical exercises through which faculty learn how to identify, provide attribution for, and reuse materials that are under copyright, open access (public domain) or under Creative Commons licenses. Research Guides and tutorials on copyright and Creative Commons have been provided to faculty, but the content can be difficult for the novice to absorb. In fact, faculty often think of copyright and Creative Commons as more confusing than they are in practice. Therefore, the …

Data Management And Curation For Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher
Data Management And Curation For Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher
Open Access Day
Researchers and librarians are increasingly required to engage in careful management and curation of research data. These are still relatively new activities in most scientific disciplines, but they are particularly uncharted territory for research involving qualitative data. Based on his experience as the associate director of the Qualitative Data Repository (https://qdr.syr.edu), Sebastian will talk about the importance of managing and sharing qualitative data and about some best practices in doing so.

Ted-Style Talk: Creating Efficiencies Using Scholars Archive, Casey Kohler
Open Access Day
Within the University at Albany, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE) hosts the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, a program designed to showcase and promote student success and research excellence. Previously, CURCE has relied upon outdated and inefficient methods for soliciting student submissions for this conference. This process will be greatly enhanced by a partnership with the University Libraries, through the use of the Scholars Archive. This open-access tool represents an opportunity that will drastically reduce costs associated with the abstract submission process, improve workflow, and involve faculty in the conference planning and application processes. Utilization of the …
The Shift Toward Open Research: A Discussion About Drivers, Recent Developments, And The Future Of Scholarship, Nick Shockey
The Shift Toward Open Research: A Discussion About Drivers, Recent Developments, And The Future Of Scholarship, Nick Shockey
Open Access Day
The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. The momentum behind open research is building; however, what the end result looks like is still very much an open question. This talk will explore the drivers of this shift toward open research, …

Panel Discussion: Provost's Open Educational Resource (Oer) Fellows, Billie Franchini, Lenore Horowitz, Marcus Adams, Jeremy Feldblyum, Matthew Ingram
Open Access Day
While the adoption of open educational resources (OERs) in the undergraduate curriculum has the evident benefit of reducing cost to the student, thinking deeply about OER adoption reveals numerous questions: can OERs match the quality of traditional textbooks and other commercial educational resources? Are there problems associated with the current textbook landscape that OERs can solve? And how easily can OERs be integrated into classrooms with established modes of instruction? Each of the Provost’s OER Fellows will discuss briefly some of the most important conclusions from the current OER research literature and discuss these in the context of SUNY Albany …
Open Access And Its Impact On Access And Subscriptions, Michael Levine-Clark
Open Access And Its Impact On Access And Subscriptions, Michael Levine-Clark
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
In this paper the author examines from a library perspective some of the complications with transitioning to an open access model for journal publishing; how costs that support publishing efforts may shift from readers to researchers; what’s happening within the library community with regard to assessing the value of subscriptions; and what universities may come to expect from content providers as private funders take a more visible role in mandating the “openness” of research information.

Open Access, Social Justice, And The Moral Imperative: Why Oa Publishing Matters To Wgs, Sarah P. Appedu
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Students in the discipline of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are uniquely positioned to critically engage with systems of power and apply academic theory to real world practice as a field that has a clear and implicit social justice angle to its scholarship. The Open Access movement can benefit from the critical theories used in WGS as a means of ensuring maximum inclusivity of the movement. Further, WGS students must acknowledge their privileged position within an academic institution and publish in ways that undermine the systems of power that lock up knowledge behind a toll in order to align their …
