Exploring The Extent To Which Universities In Ghana Deploy Knowledge Management Processes In Their Activities, De-Graft Johnson Dei, Thomas Bingle Van Der Walt

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Universities are knowledge-based organisations. They are using knowledge as a key resource and for competitive advantage. Knowledge management practices seems to be suitable for universities because they possess the conducive environment and systems. This study sought to assess the extent to which KM was practiced at the universities and the mechanisms and initiatives implemented to promote KM processes at the universities. The study adopted the survey and mixed method research approach to collect data from 118 respondents from three universities in Ghana (public, private and professional). Questionnaires (consisting of blend of closed and open-ended questions) were used to collect primary …

When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston Dec 2018

When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The paper focuses on a user-centered design project in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU). BYU students who are parents comprise about 25% of the student population. University leaders have a goal for students to graduate in fewer semesters. Some students—especially females—drop out of school upon becoming a parent. Other students delay graduation by taking fewer classes in order to attend to their parental duties. Student parents who use the library frequently did not feel welcome when accompanied by their children. Oftentimes the parents elected not to use the library as the study resource it was …

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund Dec 2018

Research Support – “Just In Time”?, Inga Lena Grønlund

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Challenges occur as research typically require “just in time” library support. The evolution of a research project may lead to sudden changes in coordination between different phases or steps in the project. Consequentially, the need for flexible research support conflicts the possibilities for long-term resource planning and coordination in the library. Moreover, these consequences will enlarge in a situation with resource scarcity. The aim of my presentation is to address some challenges posed by the time-logic inherent in research projects, based on experiences from the literature search team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University (formerly HIOA, Oslo and Akershus University …

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us! Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens Dec 2018

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us! Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. In 2017, the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Criss Library created a Textbook Reserves Pilot Project. At the time we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the bookstore, and student government, but something just …

A Multicultural Approach To Digital Information Literacy Skills Evaluation In An Israeli College, Efrat Pieterse, Riki Greenberg, Zahava Santo Dec 2018

A Multicultural Approach To Digital Information Literacy Skills Evaluation In An Israeli College, Efrat Pieterse, Riki Greenberg, Zahava Santo

Communications in Information Literacy

Information literacy is an essential proficiency for success in academic studies, yet many first-year students find it hard to use information sources efficiently and to develop academic information literacy. This study reports findings from first-year students' self-estimation of their information skills according to two information literacy models (Shapiro & Hughes, 1996; Ng, 2012) and presents interesting insights on the differences between the multicultural and multilingual student groups in the study’s population. The researchers found that Hebrew-native speaking students preferred digital sources while Hebrew as second language (Arabic-speaking) students preferred printed sources, and both groups ranked their technological and information literacy …

Identifying Grand Challenges

A global and multidisciplinary community of stakeholders came together in March 2018 to identify, scope, and prioritize a common vision for specific grand research challenges related to the fields of information science and scholarly communications. The participants included domain researchers in academia, practitioners, and those who are aiming to democratize scholarship. An explicit goal of the summit was to identify research needs related to barriers in the development of scalable, interoperable, socially beneficial, and equitable systems for scholarly information; and to explore the development of non-market approaches to governing the scholarly knowledge ecosystem.
