Research Data Needs Assessment At Georgia Tech, Lizzy Rolando
Research Data Needs Assessment At Georgia Tech, Lizzy Rolando
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
This was part of a panel presentation given with Jen Doty, Emory University, and Vince Carter, Emory University.
From late 2010 through spring of 2013, Georgia Tech Library’s Research Data Project Team conducted a multi-faceted assessment of GT research data needs. In this program, we will discuss the four methodologies used in our data needs assessment. Each methodology served a different purpose, allowing us to collect different but complementary information. While our survey provided a broad overview of practices, individual interviews contributed to a more thorough and nuanced understanding of trends observed in the survey. By analyzing data management plans …

Sacred Or Secular? How Student Perceptions May Guide Library Space Design And Utilization, Robert Fox, Bruce Keisling
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
This program reports on a collaborative research study that examined student reactions to various library designs. Building on research into why some library spaces are preferred due to their sacred or inspirational nature, the presenters conducted a study utilizing interior and exterior images of both traditional and modern-looking library spaces. Students were asked to provide their reaction to the spaces, how often and for what purposes they would use such spaces, whether they believed that type of library space would advance the institutional mission, and whether they felt that space was of a sacred/spiritual or secular/non-spiritual nature.
This research will …

Personas: An Assessment Tool For Library Space And Service Design, Kim Duckett, Honora Eskridge
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
Personas are fictional characters that embody real users’ behaviors and aspirations and can be a highly effective tool in building a shared understanding of users across a library organization. They take the power of the personal story -- something almost everyone connects to and remembers – and use it to bring broad and common understanding of a community of users to a service organization. Although personas are most commonly used in web interface design, the presenters have used personas to package needs assessment data so that it can be used for designing library services and spaces. For this presentation, we …

Thinking Outside The Box Turtle: Public Perceptions Of An Imperiled Species, Colleen M. Hartel, Stuart Carlton, Linda S. Prokopy
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) experience negative impacts from human activities. Collection for the pet trade or mortalities caused by lawn mowers and vehicles are detrimental to populations, which have experienced rapid decline in Indiana. Understanding perceptions and attitudes held about species can help outreach. This study aims to observe how perceptions and fear response differ between a) genders, b) contact with box turtles, and c) conservation group membership. Mail surveys were administered to 1,378 residents of the Blue River Watershed in Southern Indiana. Respondents rated box turtles on 11 semantic differential pairs and reported their agreement …

Rescuing biochar: Pre - application techniques to enhance plant responses to biochar additions: Nigel Gale, U of Toronto
A growing body of literature indicates variable responses of different plant species to biochar, including positive, neutral, and negative, suggesting that it is important to investigate the nature and mechanism of species-specific responses to biochar additions. Neutral or negative plant responses to additions of biochars have commonly been reported in prior studies, and are likely the result of a combination of changes in soil properties (e.g. pH, surface area, and nutrient and water retention) and the production of volatile organic compounds from …

Cascading Uses of Biochar - Hans-Peter Schmidt, Ithaka Institute
In addition to the use of biochar as a soil amendment, there are an increasing number of ways to incorporate biochar into different eco- and industrial systems. Thus feeding biochar to livestock has numerous benefits not only for the animals, but it also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improves nutrient retention in animal manure. The use of biochar in building materials is just beginning to be studied but shows promise in the ability to insulate, decontaminate air, provide odor and humidity control. Biochar as pillow filling to induce perfectly reposing …

Biochar and the Sustainability Imperative. Now marks a critical time: as biochar comes of age and markets begin to develop, this young industry is attracting naysayers, doubters and get-rich-quick-schemers. Ethical biochar production and use is of paramount importance as we continue to lay the groundwork for biochar as a model for carbon neutral/negative business, landscape restoration and truly green technology. Shortcuts, poor quality product and unsustainable use of biomass could bring biochar to its knees before it gains the traction necessary to fulfill its promises. This discussion will explore opportunities and pitfalls in feedstocks sustainability, production integrity and ethics in …

Sorptive Treatment of Metals and Nitro Explosives in Water Using Biochar -
Seok-Young Oh1*,
Biochar, a solid byproduct of a pyrolysis process was investigated as a sorbent to remove toxic metals and nitro explosives from natural water and wastewater. It was hypothesized that biochar can sorb dissolved metals and nitro explosives due to its high surface area and strong sorption affinity of aromatic organic compounds. Using a tube furnace under N2, various types biochar were synthesized by changing biomass (poultry litter, sludge, fallen leaves, corn stalk, rice straw, and coffee grounds) and temperature (250, 400, …

Confronting Cultural Difference In The Establishment Of A Global Zen Community, Joshua A. Irizarry
Confronting Cultural Difference In The Establishment Of A Global Zen Community, Joshua A. Irizarry
2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
As a commercial phenomenon, Zen is recognizable throughout the world as a lucrative brand name that communicates harmony, simplicity, and cosmopolitan elegance. In contrast, the Japanese Zen institution’s attempts to develop Zen into a successful global religion have proven more problematic. Despite initial successes by Japanese clergy in establishing centers of Zen practice throughout Europe and the Americas, the past fifty years have seen the dream of a global Zen community descend into a legacy of controversy, scandals, and schisms over conflicting claims of authority.
Looking specifically at the internationalization efforts of the Japanese Sōtō Zen sect, this paper will …

The Cult Of Ho Chi Minh: Commemoration And Contestation, Dat Manh Nguyen
2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
Ho Chi Minh, the “father of modern Viet Nam,” remains a powerful figure in contemporary Vietnamese politics and culture. Since his death in 1969, the Vietnamese Communist Party has constructed a state cult surrounding his image. The construction of the Ho Chi Minh memorial complex in Hanoi, the propagation of Ho Chi Minh’s teachings, and the state commemorative rituals for Uncle Ho contribute to his continuous presence. The state cult posits Ho Chi Minh not only as the “father figure” to whom Vietnamese people pay respect and tribute, but also as the moral compass by which the people orient themselves …

The Role of Culture in Making Psychiatric Diagnosis: Hwabyung (火病) and Neurasthenia (神經衰弱)
My paper looks at two psychiatric illnesses and discusses their social and cultural dimensions. The two illnesses to be compared are the Korean affliction called hwabyung, and the once-popular Western malady labeled neurasthenia, a common ailment in 19th century America.
Neurasthenia was defined as “a disorder characterized by feelings of fatigue and lassitude,” which is caused by the nervous system. That definition could fit most people at some time or another. Hwabyung, on the other hand, means “fire illness.” Koreans believe that chronic distress can …

"I Cannot Teach Because I Am Not Smart": Working Class Mothers’ Support For Their Children's Education In Japan, Yoko Yamamoto
2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference
Social class is a powerful element which predicts mothers’ support for their children’s academic development in Japan. Middle class mothers tend to hold higher educational expectations, invest in their children’s educational opportunities, and interact with the teachers more frequently than working class mothers (Stevenson & Stigler, 1992; Yamamoto, 2006). While ample evidence shows social class differences in parents’ academic support, few have examined why working class mothers are not as involved in their children’s education as middle class mothers. In order to understand the mechanisms of social class reproduction and mobility, it is critical to investigate the experiences and elements …

An Unholy Alliance: The Connection Between Foster Care And Human Trafficking, Michelle R. Lillie
Fifth Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking 2013
It is general knowledge within the anti-trafficking community that children facing abuse, neglect and parental substance abuse are at the greatest risk for human trafficking. Yet very little research has connected these same abused and neglected children that are currently in foster care with human trafficking. This paper examines the connection between foster care and human trafficking in the United States with special emphasis on sex trafficking. Within the human trafficking literature there is a very large gap regarding foster care and wards of the state. Very little statistical data are available on the prevalence of foster care children involved …

As a key actor within the human rights transnational advocacy network, NGOs, such as Amnesty International, strive to shape individuals’ values on such contentious issues as the use of torture and to mobilize them to act on their values. While much has been written describing this advocacy work, little systematic research has been done evaluating its efficacy. We conducted archival research to identify the three most common messaging techniques employed by AI: (1) informational frames, where the focus is to educate the reader by presenting them with core facts and statistics; (2) personal frames, where a personal narrative is told …
