Ten years ago, the Georgia Tech Library created an electronic Tally Sheet to record transaction statistics. In the last decade, this system has been used by each of our public service departments and has evolved to make recording transactions easier for library staff to use. The system started as a unified single-page sheet with drop-downs to reflect multiple transactions and transaction details to sidebars individualized to each unit with single-click buttons and drop-downs.

Reporting of the transaction statistics has evolved from monthly and annual reports in Excel to a dynamic web-based interface. This data along with attendance data and circulation …

Academic librarians are connecting with campus partners in novel ways to question and discover how they bring value to their institutions. To foster these partnerships, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), with funding from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, launched “Assessment in Action: Academic Libraries and Student Success” (AiA). This three-year program will to aid 300 postsecondary institutions of all types as they create engaged libraries of the future. As academic libraries increasingly focus on user experience as a means of improving spaces, services, and collections, more librarians find themselves conducting studies of varying complexity to provide data supporting decisions. In January 2013, the NCSU Libraries opened a new library building, the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library. With numerous high-tech spaces, the Hunt Library is meant to define the library of the 21st century. In early 2012, a team of librarians from Emory University's Robert W Woodruff Library set out to better understand how the library's key user groups work, what they need to do that work, and how the library might better meet those needs. To develop its understanding the team modified the Voice of the Customer FOCUS methodology--a clearly defined and rigorous process for developing and conducting semi-structured interviews and for analyzing the data associated with those interviews.

Assessment pervades every single department in the library, and every staff person has some part to play. In preparing for a new library strategic plan, and for campus SACS reaccreditation, the University of North Texas took the opportunity to identify exactly what assessments are being done, no matter how internal they may seem. A newly formed Assessment Workgroup identified qualitative and quantitative assessments being performed for both internal and external bodies, and mapped them to demonstrate to employees everything the library does to improve service quality, make workflows more efficient, and improve education for students.

Research was conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study the usability of two search interfaces – one tabbed interface similar to the current UNC-CH library homepage and one with a single search bar similar to Google. The UNC-CH Libraries also developed a combined search tool that pulls library resources from the Serials Solutions Summon service and from the Endeca-powered catalog. The usability test involved several tasks to determine interface preference, autosuggest’s utility, and the optimal location for the “best bets” recommendation box within the results. As attentive as we were in gathering information for the design of our knowledge/learning/information commons, it is important that we subsequently assess how these spaces are being used. During the 2008 ARL Library Assessment Conference, 12 easy-to-use techniques were identified to help libraries gather information which could inform design. This program examines how extensively these techniques were used and how successfully they have been applied in post-construction assessments. From late 2010 through spring of 2013, Georgia Tech Library’s Research Data Project Team conducted a multi-faceted assessment of GT research data needs. In this program, we will discuss the four methodologies used in our data needs assessment. Each methodology served a different purpose, allowing us to collect different but complementary information. While our survey provided a broad overview of practices, individual interviews contributed to a more thorough and nuanced understanding of trends observed in the survey. This program reports on a collaborative research study that examined student reactions to various library designs. Building on research into why some library spaces are preferred due to their sacred or inspirational nature, the presenters conducted a study utilizing interior and exterior images of both traditional and modern-looking library spaces. Students were asked to provide their reaction to the spaces, how often and for what purposes they would use such spaces, whether they believed that type of library space would advance the institutional mission, and whether they felt that space was of a sacred/spiritual or secular/non-spiritual nature.
