Gender Mainstreaming In International News: A Case Study Of The Inter Press Service, Margaretha Geertsema

Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

From 1994 to 1999, the global news agency Inter Press Service (IPS) implemented a gender mainstreaming policy in its newsrooms. This study examined organizational changes and news coverage that IPS advocated, as well as methods employed to bring about these changes. It shows that IPS has not been able to mainstream gender into all aspects of the organization and news coverage, and it considers reasons for the lacking implementation of the policy, while documenting IPS's efforts to improve women's access and representation in international news.

Digital collections exist at all types of institutions throughout the Northwest. Wrangling these online resources all into one place is quite a challenge. This poster will raise awareness of and highlight digital collections both big and small throughout the region. The range of collections spans from historical documents detailing local histories to the digital repositories of official government business to photographs and objects documenting Northwest culture (music, art, environment). Recently the Boise State University English Department and Albertsons Library collaborated on digitizing a collection of out-of-print editions of the Western Writers Series. Boise State publishes the Western Writers Series which consists of 50-60 page booklets of authoritative introductions to writers and classic texts that relate to literature of the American West. This poster will showcase the collaboration and motivation that went into the Western Writers Series Digital Editions. The daily newspaper in North America has long been a locally based medium, which offers an opportunity to media geographers to explore concepts of place and locality, and how they have changed over time. This article explores how newspapers create a sense of place about the locality they serve. It reviews some of the major geographic theories of place and the local, as well as the work of communications scholars on how newspapers construct reality in their pages.
