The Presence Of Popular Business Titles In Abld Collections, Georgette Nicolosi, Lauren Reiter

Library and Learning Resources Faculty Research & Creative Works

Perspectives on the inclusion of popular reading titles within academic libraries have varied over the past few decades. While literature on the purpose of subject-specific fiction titles within academic reading collections exists, research on subject-specific non-fiction items is absent from the literature. The authors of this study recognize the ways in which popular business titles serve numerous purposes within their own institutions. As such, this study seeks to explore the holdings of popular business titles within academic libraries, and whether their physical location can provide an understanding of the perceptions of business leisure reading within academic research institutions. Performing A Comeback: Assessing The Biography Of Alma Mahler Via Youtube Performances, Rachel E. Scott Jan 2024

Performing A Comeback: Assessing The Biography Of Alma Mahler Via Youtube Performances, Rachel E. Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The life and work of many nineteenth-century women composers cannot be satisfactorily studied or understood due to a lack of documentary evidence. In the case of Alma Mahler, however, it is not a lack of manuscript materials or biographical accounts that preclude the appraisal of her legacy, but rather the sheer volume and often contradictory nature of accounts. Although her early life writing emphasized the importance of music, she later downplayed her identity as a composer and emphasized her role of patron of the arts and muse to “great men.” I would argue, however, that if biography is a tool …

Looking Back: Put A Reading Bathtub In The Library, Reinette F. Jones

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Book lovers may remember when old school librarians warned children not to read library books while in the bathtub. Today those memories are in juxtaposition with the new National Read in the Bathtub Day on February 9th. The unanswered question is when exactly this special day became a thing. While the reference librarians search for a definitive answer, there is a companion question. Who came up with the fun idea to place a reading bathtub in the children’s library? A reading bathtub is just that, a bathtub in the public area of the library, an upholstered piece of library furniture …

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

When it comes to collection reappraisal or deaccessioning, rare book or non-circulating research collections are often overlooked until space considerations bring the issue to the forefront. After all, no librarian likes discarding books, particularly historic ones. This case study shows how the Special Collections and University Archives at the University of North Florida reappraised a rare books collection and created collecting criteria to aid in the disposition of rare and non-circulating books. Although lack of space was clearly a pressing issue, the rare and non-circulating book collection at UNF lacked development guidance for many years, becoming unwieldy and no longer …
