The Inclusive Leadership Subcommittee has drafted the following Inclusive Library Leadership Definition:
Inclusive library leaders are individuals who are aware of their own biases, actively seek out and consider different perspectives to inform their decision-making, collaborate more effectively with others through cultural competency, and center empathy and compassion in their approach to leadership. ~Inspired by the CCL definition of Inclusive Leadership In doing its research and in support of knowledge sharing, the Subcommittee created an annotated bibliography on inclusive leadership. The annotated bibliography collates resources to articulate the qualities and traits of inclusive leadership, many of which are from outside …

So much of Libraries’ Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) work has been dually focused on increasing diversity while changing hearts and minds through training. Eventually, learning must lead to action and active commitment if inclusion, equity, and accessibility are to be integral parts of a library’s organizational culture as a PWI. By articulating how every role within the Libraries actively contributes to its IDEA commitment, leadership is making expectations clear for individuals and part of ongoing work. By building accountability for the IDEA work for all, including leaders, the libraries are ensuring that efforts are concrete, part of ongoing …

Prioritization Matrices For Digital Preservation Planning, Annie Benefiel
Prioritization Matrices For Digital Preservation Planning, Annie Benefiel
Presentations
Appraisal strategies can be leveraged to inform decision-making around digital preservation planning, lending curatorial oversight to an area that is often perceived as highly technical. A prioritization matrix is a project management tool to help you narrow down multiple project or task options, and identify the highest-priority areas. They facilitate decision making, are customizable, and easy to read. This poster presentation explores the prioritization matrix methodology used by GVSU Special Collections & University Archives in digital preservation planning.

Decentering Whiteness, Dismantling Systemic Bias: Examining Empathetic, High-Communication, And Supportive Hiring Processes To Forge An Inclusive Future, Annie Bélanger, Sheila García Mazari, Preethi Gorecki
Presentations
This presentation will explore perspectives on inclusive hiring practices from both sides of the table. The library's first diversity residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The diversity residency search committee chair, one of the successful residency candidates, and a tenure-track faculty hired using the new approach team up to dissect the hiring process from their perspectives. They will discuss the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing an inclusive recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process. They will then discuss …

Leaders and managers have an outsized impact on workers’ wellbeing. In facing the reality of constant and unpredictable change, leaders and managers need to consider the humanity of their employees as part of their commitment to equity. We suggest that library leaders and managers need to consider human-centered approaches as part of their leadership toolkit. Human-centered leaders have a strong focus on people and the organizational culture. They layer compassion and empathy in taking actions to fulfill the organization's mission.
We acknowledge that there are situations when taking a human-centered approach to the needs of library employees can feel in …

Have you ever wondered if the interview process could be a kinder, more accessible experience anchored in equity that is ultimately meant to develop connections? Would you like to critically examine practices in the hiring process to ensure empathy for applicants going through the process? In taking a closer look at our own practices, we made significant improvements to our processes, which have led to a more positive experience for candidates and our organizational outcomes. Books and Contributions to Books
For decades, the Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) has promoted library services across campus and provided information literacy instruction upon request. Despite these efforts, the library’s reach was not evenly distributed across subject disciplines or course levels, with over half of the instruction occurring at the first-year level. The TAMU-CC librarians knew that to help students become truly information literate, equitable instruction was needed across more disciplines and throughout all course levels.
In the spring of 2018, we encountered an opportunity to create a robust digital information literacy program in the shape of a …

Time Towards Tenure Dean’S Procedures For University Libraries, Annie Bélanger
Library Reports and Communication
The Dean has the authority to grant time towards tenure as per BOT Policy 4.2.7 at the time of appointment. The policy allows for up to 3 years of equivalency at another academic institution. Once granted, it cannot be subsequently changed, rescinded or revoked. The ability to pause the tenure clock as granted by BOT Policy 4.2.7.2 remains available to faculty members who have been awarded time towards tenure.
This document outlines the approach that the Dean of University Libraries will use in granting time towards tenure in order to advance transparency and accountability in the granting of equivalency.

The framework is a compass that will guide the Libraries’ path through an evolving digital landscape in order to inform efforts within the Libraries’ locus of control as well as the interactions and partnerships with external bodies.
Centering Or Empowering—Shifting Power To The Library Members, Annie Bélanger
Centering Or Empowering—Shifting Power To The Library Members, Annie Bélanger
Scholarly Papers and Articles
Libraries are activated by our community members and our staff. Libraries use a variety of words to describe the people that frequent them. The words are often used habitually, rather than after a critical review of their origin and impacts. If libraries are not neutral, how might this translate into the language that we use, the way we make decisions, and how we engage with our community members? This column will explore the growth of public services, the language we use to refer to the people we serve, and how to empower our community members as well as partners in …

Fostering Data Literacy Teaching With Quantitative Data In The Social Sciences, Dylan Ruedinger, Daniella Miriam Cooper, Samantha Minnis, Gayle Schaub
Scholarly Papers and Articles
Quantitative literacy is an essential twenty-first century skill that universities are heavily invested in teaching to students. The social sciences play an important role in these efforts because they attract students who might otherwise avoid data and mathematically oriented courses and because they ground quantitative reasoning in political and social contexts that resonate with undergraduates. However, pedagogical best practices for social science instructors have been slow to emerge and the support needs of instructors and students remain difficult to discern. Ithaka S+R’s Teaching Support Services program explores the teaching practices and support needs of collegiate instructors. Our most recent project …

Libraries serve an important role in accessing information, delivering services, and fostering a sense of community. Libraries must ask whether they are serving all of their community members equitably. People with disabilities need to be able to access the libraries fully. This article first provides an overview of approaches for moving beyond compliance in the development and delivery of services to people with disabilities. It explores barriers to accessing services for people with disabilities and ways to overcome them. Lastly, it outlines daily interaction tips in providing service to people with disabilities.

Librarians within the Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) annually publish conference papers for the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The existing ASEE rubric was not sufficient for our members, so we developed a new rubric as a charged committee for this task. We briefly discuss the sparse literature in this area, focusing on the use of rubrics and the rationale behind them. Due to this lack of literature, our committee primarily utilized additional sources such as rubrics found from other professional organizations in STEM and library fields. Our rubric is designed to encourage substantive feedback and growth of authors during …

Engaging Identity And Positionality In Designing Library Subject Guides: The Landscape Of Sovereign Tribal Nations And Lgbtq+ Peoples, Kim L. Ranger
Presentations
We can engage tribal nations and LGBTQ+ peoples while acknowledging that we cannot speak to their experience. We’ll discuss teaching the knowledge of diverse peoples and providing resources without appropriating their cultures, along with the boundaries between respecting unique perspectives and heritage versus appropriation.
We will engage the question of how identity and positionality influence the ways we design asynchronous instructional materials. We’ll discuss the characteristics of positive design principles regarding diverse groups.
