Identifying The Resource And Service Needs Of Graduate And Professional Students: The University Of Iowa User Needs Of Graduate Professional Series, Carlette Washington-Hoagland, Leo Clougherty, Dorothy Persson, Hope Barton, Jim Cheng, John Forys, Christine Walters

The library profession has a vested interest in the retention and information literacy of graduate and professional students. Recent research highlights the need for the overall study of graduate student use of the library and of those services and resources geared toward that population. A University of Iowa Libraries' user needs assessment survey of a random sample of graduate and professional students revealed that although graduate and professional students come to the library to do research or to use other library resources, fewer come to study or borrow books. Graduate and professional students recognize the need for more assistance in …

The Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation (CISO), an Advisory Committee to the President of the University of South Florida, first convened in September 1993. Later renamed the Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (CISOGI), this advisory body regularly meets with USF executive staff, human resources personnel, and representatives from the diversity and equal opportunity offices. This university-wide body has consulted with groups about adding non-discriminatory clauses and partner benefits for all employees, regardless of sexual orientation. In addition, this committee supports leadership initiatives and opportunities for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students at the University of …

The Anchor: 2002
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Review Of Water Wars: Privatization, Pollution, And Profit By Vandana Shiva; South End Press, 2002, Sue Ann Gardner
UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
A renowned expert in global agricultural and environmental issues, Shiva has produced another volume, this time on the perils of privatization and pollution of water resources. Covering water's significance, from its practical necessity to its spiritual essence, Shiva sets out to justify the premise that "The water crisis is the most pervasive, most severe, and most invisible dimension of the ecological devastation of the earth." Though the topic is timely and poignant, the presentation is more that of a collection of research notes than a fully formed essay. The organization is not straightforward either chronologically or in terms of subject …

Disappearing Databases, Carol Tenopir
Disappearing Databases, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT, September 30, 2002, 19 databases disappeared without a trace from the Dialog online system. The reason? CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) and Dialog had failed to reach a renewal agreement. On October 1, Dialog searchers received a message "file does not exist" when they entered a CSA file number. A logon message listed the file numbers that were removed. (Admittedly, a notice was sent to subscribers, and a logon warning message ran for a couple of weeks prior to October 1.) This is just the latest case in a disturbing trend of disappearing databases.

Transformation Based Learning For Specialization Of Generic Event Extractions, Mary D. Taffet, Nancy Mccracken, Eileen Allen, Elizabeth D. Liddy
Transformation Based Learning For Specialization Of Generic Event Extractions, Mary D. Taffet, Nancy Mccracken, Eileen Allen, Elizabeth D. Liddy
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
As part of our Evidence Extraction and Link Discovery (EELD) project, we proposed to use Transformation Based Learning (TBL) to learn domain-specific specializations for generic event extractions. The primary goal of our learning task was to reduce the amount of human effort required for specializing generic event extractions to domains that are new and specific. Three initial annotation cycles and one annotation review and correction cycle involving a total of 70 documents were completed, with slightly over 32 hours required for the entire annotation effort; where possible, the annotation cycles started with bootstrapped files resulting from the application of TBL …
Concept Tree Based Clustering Visualization With Shaded Similarity Matrices, Bei Yu, Jun Wang, Les Gasser
Concept Tree Based Clustering Visualization With Shaded Similarity Matrices, Bei Yu, Jun Wang, Les Gasser
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
One of the problems with existing clustering methods is that the interpretation of clusters may be difficult. Two different approaches have been used to solve this problem: conceptual clustering in machine learning and clustering visualization in statistics and graphics. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the benefits of combining clustering visualization and conceptual clustering to obtain better cluster interpretations. In our research we have combined concept trees for conceptual clustering with shaded similarity matrices for visualization. Experimentation shows that the two interpretation approaches can complement each other to help us understand data better.
