"What Are You?": Multiracial Library Workers' Experiences In Libraries, Diana Wakimoto

While increasing attention, research, and writing have elevated issues faced by library workers who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), multiracial library workers are often, if not always, left out of the conversation around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The work around DEI in the library profession often erases the lived experiences of multiracial library workers. In turn, this erasure silences our experiences of racism and microaggressions, as well as our unique views and experiences.

Media literacy is a much-needed competency in the digitalised world, but it is still an unknown knowledge base for older Thai adults. This design-based research set out as an initiative to promote media literacy through an agefriendly and culture-responsive training programme. The design process involved focus groups with key stakeholders and older adult ‘learners’ as well as field observations. This type of research work, in the Thai context, revealed the primacy of integrating media literacy learning with the Buddhist practice of mindfulness. The Sherman Indian Museum houses a rich collection of archival materials that document the student experience, institutional culture, and community history of California’s sole remaining off-reservation American Indian boarding school. To broaden access to its collection for community and scholarly use, the museum partnered with the University of California, Riverside Library on a grant-funded project to digitize and provide online access to nearly 14,000 items from their collection. Communication students of the twenty-first century must not only be able to interact in multiple formats but be able to express their ideas across varied platforms. A common deterrent faced by students conducting research is the lack of applicability of the subject matter to their lives. The integration of genealogical research can address this issue because it allows students to learn about, and celebrate, their family history. While engaged in such a pursuit, students will develop core communication skills, such as speaking and listening, online research, and message design.

Connecting Local Archive Data To Wikidata: Focusing On The Archives Of National Debt Redemption Movement, Jaehyuk Yun, Sam G. Oh

This study aims to enhance accessibility and data utilization of digital cultural heritage preserved by the National Debt Redemption Movement (NDRM) digital archive. The NDRM archive wants to promote the historical value of cultural heritage, but it struggles with data openness, a common problem for small local archives. In order to overcome this limitation, the research proposes using Wikidata and its SPARQL-based query service. This includes analyzing NDRM materials, the current state of the archive, and metadata elements, and then mapping these to Wikidata properties. This paper chronicles events surrounding the creation of the largest academic Japanese law library in the United States, while focusing on two extraordinary law faculty members at Columbia Law School and their successful fundraising efforts from the initial concept of building a Japanese law library through the establishment of permanent funding. It recounts others who tirelessly supported carrying through this arduous plan. It is about insightful visions, perseverance, and lasting personal relationships, as well as building a foreign law collection in the United States. It examines lessons to be learned.

Student Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of A Required Information Literacy Test In The First Academic Year, Howard S. Carrier, David Vess, Kathy Clarke

This paper reports on how one university attempts to instruct all incoming students on information literacy fundamentals using an asynchronous test supported by a suite of related materials. The paper explores how students interpret the efficacy of this model as they move further along in their academic career. Using a mixed-methods approach, with the majority of data being obtained through focus groups, the researchers (librarians employed in the library through which the test is developed), reflect on the advantages and disadvantages to this model, and suggest improvements to further ensure student engagement with this type of information literacy instruction and …

In 1911, the American Library Association (ALA) formed its first committee on prison libraries. While this committee opened the door to important conversations on correctional libraries, the ALA did not actively become involved in correctional systems until 1944, when the Objectives and Standards for Libraries in Adult Prisons and Reformatories were approved (Austin, 2019). The real catalyst for creating nationwide libraries for the incarcerated came in 1971, when “Congress passed the Law Enforcement Administration Act, which funded prison law libraries and provided budgets for other reading materials” (Sullivan, 2000, p. 57). With 35 mm slides being such a widely popular format throughout the 20th century, it is no wonder why they hold a great deal of history from that era within their tiny frames. As pieces of history, 35 mm slides are valuable documentary materials, and to keep the history they contain alive, they must be physically preserved. The purpose of this content analysis study was to gather and determine physical preservation methods and standards for the preservation of 35 mm slides from peer-reviewed journals and other published sources from 1980-2021.
