Research Methods Into Language/Code Switching And Synthesis Of Findings Into Theory, Kristine Fitch Dec 1982

Research Methods Into Language/Code Switching And Synthesis Of Findings Into Theory, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

While language switching among multilinguals has been studied in a wide variety of contexts, few attempts have been made to generalize or to integrate findings into useful communication theory. Since language switching is an important part of personal as well as group identity and since issues surrounding language identity are often a focal point of interethnic conflict, the speech act of switching language merits a more concentrated study. This can be accomplished through such techniques as ethnographic description, consisting of participant observation, interviewing, and breaching experiments; conversation analysis of bilingual interaction; and examination of communication behavior through literature. Such diverse …

The Communication Of Morality: Cooperation And Commitment In A Food Co-Op, Teresa G. Labov

Teresa G Labov

Doctoral dissertation of Teresa Gnasso Labov. Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Political Science at Columbia University, 1980. This study investigates the communication of morality in the verbal behavior of a group. Patterns of interaction among members of a food cooperative are examined to find evidence of their use of moral matters in talk. Structural changes in the organization reduced the extent of cooperation and commitment demanded of participants, yet there was apparently little talk of these moral matters. Closer examination of the talk reveals a number of …

Some Improvements To The Minimop Multi-Access Operating System, Michael Rees Dec 1970

Some Improvements To The Minimop Multi-Access Operating System, Michael Rees

Michael J Rees

The MINIMOP Multi-Access system provides a range of on-line facilities particularly suitable for a university environment. Programs in ALGOL and FORTRAN can be written and tested under MINIMOP; a conversational subsystem, derived from JOSS, considerably enhances the usefulness of the Multi-Access system. After one year's operation at the University of Southampton, it was considered desirable to attempt to expand the facilities of MINIMOP, and correct some of the faults still present in the system. This paper, after a brief description of the basic system, describes the modifications that have been made, and presents some extensions that may be possible in …
